1 A nd it cometh to pass, in the days of the judging of the judges, that there is a famine in the land, and there goeth a man from Beth-Lehem-Judah to sojourn in the fields of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

Pe vremea când judecau judecătorii, a fost o foamete în ţară. Atunci un bărbat din Betleemul lui Iuda a plecat împreună cu soţia lui şi cu cei doi fii ai săi să locuiască ca străin în câmpiile Moabului.

2 A nd the name of the man Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites from Beth-Lehem-Judah; and they come into the fields of Moab, and are there.

Bărbatul se numea Elimelek, soţia lui se numea Naomi, iar cei doi fii ai săi se numeau Mahlon şi Chilion. Ei erau efratiţi din Betleemul lui Iuda. Când au ajuns în câmpiile Moabului, s-au stabilit acolo.

3 A nd Elimelech husband of Naomi dieth, and she is left, she and her two sons;

Însă Elimelek, soţul lui Naomi, a murit şi ea a rămas astfel singură cu cei doi fii ai ei.

4 a nd they take to them wives, Moabitesses: the name of the one Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth; and they dwell there about ten years.

Aceştia s-au căsătorit cu moabite; numele uneia era Orpa, iar numele celeilalte era Rut. După ce au locuit acolo aproape zece ani,

5 A nd they die also, both of them -- Mahlon and Chilion -- and the woman is left of her two children and of her husband.

cei doi, adică Mahlon şi Chilion, au murit şi ei, astfel încât femeia a rămas singură, fără cele două odrasle ale ei şi fără soţul său.

6 A nd she riseth, she and her daughters-in-law, and turneth back from the fields of Moab, for she hath heard in the fields of Moab that God hath looked after His people, -- to give to them bread.

Ea s-a hotărât apoi să plece din câmpiile Moabului împreună cu cele două nurori ale ei, pentru că a aflat că Domnul i-a cercetat poporul şi i-a dat din nou hrană.

7 A nd she goeth out from the place where she hath been, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they go in the way to turn back unto the land of Judah.

Naomi a plecat din locul în care locuise, iar cele două nurori ale ei erau cu ea. Au pornit la drum ca să se întoarcă în ţara lui Iuda.

8 A nd Naomi saith to her two daughters-in-law, `Go, turn back, each to the house of her mother; Jehovah doth with you kindness as ye have done with the dead, and with me;

La un moment dat însă Naomi le-a zis celor două nurori ale ei: – Plecaţi! Întoarceţi-vă fiecare la casa mamei sale! Domnul să se poarte faţă de voi cu bunătatea cu care şi voi v-aţi purtat faţă de cei ce au murit şi faţă de mine!

9 J ehovah doth grant to you, and find ye rest each in the house of her husband;' and she kisseth them, and they lift up their voice and weep.

Să dea Domnul ca fiecare din voi să găsească odihnă în casa viitorului soţ! Apoi le-a sărutat de rămas bun, dar ele au început să plângă.

10 A nd they say to her, `Surely with thee we go back to thy people.'

– Venim şi noi cu tine la poporul tău, i-au zis ele.

11 A nd Naomi saith, `Turn back, my daughters; why do ye go with me? are there yet to me sons in my bowels that they have been to you for husbands?

– Nu, copilele mele, le-a răspuns Naomi, întoarceţi-vă! De ce să veniţi cu mine? Mai pot eu oare avea fii în pântecele meu, care să fie apoi soţii voştri?

12 T urn back, my daughters, go, for I am too aged to be to a husband; though I had said, There is for me hope, also, I have been to-night to a husband, and also I have borne sons:

Întoarceţi-vă, copilele mele! Plecaţi! Eu sunt prea bătrână să mai am un soţ. Chiar dacă aş zice că mai este nădejde pentru mine, chiar dacă aş fi în noaptea aceasta cu un bărbat şi aş naşte fii,

13 f or them do ye wait till that they grow up? for them do ye shut yourselves up, not to be to a husband? nay, my daughters, for more bitter to me than to you, for the hand of Jehovah hath gone out against me.'

aţi aştepta voi până se vor face mari? Vă veţi păstra voi pentru ei, fără să vă măritaţi? Nu, copilele mele! Amărăciunea mea este prea mare pentru voi, căci mâna Domnului s-a întins împotriva mea!

14 A nd they lift up their voice, and weep again, and Orpah kisseth her mother-in-law, and Ruth hath cleaved to her.

Nurorile au început iarăşi să plângă. Orpa şi-a sărutat soacra de rămas bun şi a plecat, dar Rut s-a ţinut de ea.

15 A nd she saith, `Lo, thy sister-in-law hath turned back unto her people, and unto her god, turn thou back after thy sister-in-law.'

– Cumnata ta s-a întors la poporul ei şi la zeii ei! i-a zis Naomi. Du-te şi tu după cumnata ta!

16 A nd Ruth saith, `Urge me not to leave thee -- to turn back from after thee; for whither thou goest I go, and where thou lodgest I lodge; thy people my people, and thy God my God.

– Nu stărui să te părăsesc şi să mă întorc de la tine, i-a răspuns Rut. Unde mergi tu, vreau să merg şi eu, unde locuieşti tu, vreau să locuiesc şi eu; poporul tău va fi şi poporul meu, iar Dumnezeul tău va fi şi Dumnezeul meu.

17 W here thou diest I die, and there I am buried; thus doth Jehovah to me, and thus doth He add -- for death itself doth part between me and thee.'

Unde vei muri tu, voi muri şi eu şi tot acolo voi fi şi îngropată. Domnul să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea dacă altceva decât moartea mă va despărţi de tine!

18 A nd she seeth that she is strengthening herself to go with her, and she ceaseth to speak unto her;

Văzând-o hotărâtă să meargă cu ea, Naomi a încetat să-i mai vorbească astfel.

19 a nd they go both of them till their coming in to Beth-Lehem; and it cometh to pass at their coming in to Beth-Lehem, that all the city is moved at them, and they say, `Is this Naomi?'

Au plecat amândouă şi au călătorit împreună până au ajuns la Betleem. Când au intrat în Betleem, toată cetatea s-a pus în mişcare din pricina lor. – Aceasta este Naomi?! se întrebau femeile.

20 A nd she saith unto them, `Call me not Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly to me,

– Nu mă mai numiţi Naomi, le-a răspuns ea, ci numiţi-mă Mara, pentru că Cel Atotputernic m-a amărât mult.

21 I went out full, and empty hath Jehovah brought me back, why do ye call me Naomi, and Jehovah hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath done evil to me?'

Când am plecat, aveam de toate, dar Domnul m-a adus înapoi cu mâinile goale. De ce să mă mai numiţi Naomi, de vreme ce Domnul a mărturisit împotriva mea şi Cel Atotputernic a adus necazul asupra mea?

22 A nd Naomi turneth back, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, who hath turned back from the fields of Moab, and they have come in to Beth-Lehem at the commencement of barley-harvest.

Aşa s-a întors Naomi din câmpiile Moabului împreună cu moabita Rut, nora ei. Ele au sosit în Betleem, tocmai când începea seceratul orzului.
