1 S urely there is for silver a source, And a place for the gold they refine;

Cu siguranţă, argintul are o mină din care este scos, iar aurul are un loc unde este curăţit.

2 I ron from the dust is taken, And the firm stone brass.

Fierul este luat din pământ şi arama este scoasă din minereu.

3 A n end hath he set to darkness, And to all perfection he is searching, A stone of darkness and death-shade.

Omul pune capăt întunericului şi caută până în locurile cele mai adânci după minereurile ascunse în cel mai negru întuneric.

4 A stream hath broken out from a sojourner, Those forgotten of the foot, They were low, from man they wandered.

El sapă un puţ departe de locuinţa oamenilor, în locuri necălcate de piciorul omului; el stă atârnat şi se clatină, departe de oameni.

5 T he earth! from it cometh forth bread, And its under-part is turned like fire.

Pământul din care vine hrana este răscolit pe dedesubt ca de foc.

6 A place of the sapphire its stones, And it hath dust of gold.

Safirul iese din pietrele lui şi colbul lui are pulbere de aur.

7 A path -- not known it hath a ravenous fowl, Nor scorched it hath an eye of the kite,

Nici o pasăre de pradă nu ştie acea cărare ascunsă, nici ochiul şoimului n-a văzut-o.

8 N or trodden it have the sons of pride, Not passed over it hath the fierce lion.

Nici fiarele cele mai mândre n-au călcat pe ea, leul n-a trecut niciodată pe acolo.

9 A gainst the flint he sent forth his hand, He overturned from the root mountains.

Omul pune mâna pe stânca de cremene şi răstoarnă munţii din rădăcini.

10 A mong rocks, brooks he hath cleaved, And every precious thing hath his eye seen.

El sapă şanţuri în stâncă şi ochii lui îi văd toate bogăţiile.

11 F rom overflowing floods he hath bound, And the hidden thing bringeth out light.

El caută izvoarele râurilor şi aduce la lumină lucruri ascunse.

12 A nd the wisdom -- whence is it found? And where this, the place of understanding?

Dar unde poate fi găsită înţelepciunea? Unde locuieşte priceperea?

13 M an hath not known its arrangement, Nor is it found in the land of the living.

Omul nu-i cunoaşte locuinţa; ea nu poate fi găsită pe pământul celor vii.

14 T he deep hath said, `It not in me,' And the sea hath said, `It is not with me.'

Adâncul zice: «Nu este în mine!», iar marea zice: «Nu este la mine!»

15 G old is not given for it, Nor is silver weighed -- its price.

Ea nu se dă în schimbul aurului ales, nici preţul ei nu poate fi cântărit în argint.

16 I t is not valued with pure gold of Ophir, With precious onyx and sapphire,

Ea nu poate fi cumpărată cu aur de Ofir şi nici cu onix preţios sau cu safir.

17 N ot equal it do gold and crystal, Nor its exchange a vessel of fine gold.

Nici aurul, nici diamantul nu se pot compara cu ea, nici nu poate fi schimbată pe bijuterii de aur.

18 C orals and pearl are not remembered, The acquisition of wisdom above rubies.

Coralul şi cristalul nu merită a fi amintite; preţul înţelepciunii este dincolo de al mărgăritarelor.

19 N ot equal it doth the topaz of Cush, With pure gold it is not valued.

Topazul de Cuş nu se poate compara cu ea, ea nu poate fi cumpărată cu aur curat.

20 A nd the wisdom -- whence doth it come? And where this, the place of understanding?

De unde vine atunci înţelepciunea? Unde locuieşte priceperea?

21 I t hath been hid from the eyes of all living. And from the fowl of the heavens It hath been hidden.

Ea este ascunsă de ochii tuturor celor vii, ascunsă chiar şi de păsările cerului.

22 D estruction and death have said: `With our ears we have heard its fame.'

Locul Nimicirii şi Moartea zic: «Am auzit doar vorbindu-se despre ea.»

23 G od hath understood its way, And He hath known its place.

Dumnezeu cunoaşte calea spre ea şi doar El ştie unde locuieşte,

24 F or He to the ends of the earth doth look, Under the whole heavens He doth see,

pentru că El se uită până la marginile pământului, vede tot ce se întâmplă sub ceruri.

25 T o make for the wind a weight, And the waters He meted out in measure.

Când i-a dat vântului puterea şi a hotărât mărimea apelor,

26 I n His making for the rain a limit, And a way for the brightness of the voices,

când a dat o lege pentru ploaie şi o cărare pentru trăsnet,

27 T hen He hath seen and declareth it, He hath prepared it, and also searched it out,

atunci s-a uitat la înţelepciune şi a lăudat-o; a aşezat-o şi a încercat-o.

28 A nd He saith to man: -- `Lo, fear of the Lord, that wisdom, And to turn from evil understanding.'

Apoi i-a zis omului: «Frica de Domnul – acesta este înţelepciune şi depărtarea de rău este pricepere.»“
