1 A nd it cometh to pass when all the kings of the Amorite which beyond the Jordan, towards the sea, and all the kings of the Canaanite which by the sea, hear how that Jehovah hath dried up the waters of the Jordan at the presence of the sons of Israel till their passing over, that their heart is melted, and there hath not been in them any more spirit because of the presence of the sons of Israel.

Când toţi regii amoriţi din partea de apus a Iordanului şi toţi regii canaaniţi de pe ţărm au auzit că Domnul a secat apele Iordanului înaintea israeliţilor până l-am traversat, li s-au înmuiat inimile şi şi-au pierdut curajul înaintea israeliţilor.

2 A t that time said Jehovah unto Joshua, `Make for thee knives of flint, and turn back, circumcise the sons of Israel a second time;'

Atunci Domnul i-a poruncit lui Iosua: „Făureşte-ţi nişte cuţite de cremene şi fă din nou circumcizia israeliţilor!“

3 a nd Joshua maketh for him knives of flint, and circumciseth the sons of Israel at the height of the foreskins.

Iosua a făcut nişte cuţite de cremene şi i-a circumcis pe israeliţi la Ghivat-Haaralot.

4 A nd this the thing which Joshua circumciseth: all the people who are coming out of Egypt, who are males, all the men of war have died in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out of Egypt,

Motivul pentru care el i-a circumcis, a fost următorul: toţi aceia care ieşiseră din Egipt, şi anume toţi luptătorii, muriseră în timpul călătoriilor prin pustie, după ieşirea din Egipt.

5 f or all the people who are coming out were circumcised, and all the people who born in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out from Egypt, they have not circumcised;

Aceştia fuseseră circumcişi, dar poporul născut în timpul călătoriilor prin pustie, după ieşirea din Egipt, nu fusese circumcis.

6 f or forty years have the sons of Israel gone in the wilderness, till all the nation of the men of war who are coming out of Egypt, who hearkened not to the voice of Jehovah, to whom Jehovah hath sworn not to show them the land which Jehovah sware to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey, are consumed;

Israeliţii au călătorit patruzeci de ani prin pustie până când a pierit întreaga generaţie de luptători care ieşiseră din Egipt şi care nu ascultaseră de glasul Domnului. Domnul le-a jurat că nu îi va lăsa să vadă ţara despre care Domnul jurase strămoşilor lor că ne-o va da, ţară în care curge lapte şi miere.

7 a nd their sons He raised up in their stead, them hath Joshua circumcised, for they have been uncircumcised, for they have not circumcised them in the way.

În locul acestei generaţii, El i-a ridicat pe fiii lor, fii pe care i-a circumcis Iosua. Ei erau necircumcişi pentru că nu fuseseră circumcişi în timpul călătoriilor.

8 A nd it cometh to pass when all the nation have completed to be circumcised, that they abide in their places in the camp till their recovering;

După ce a terminat de circumcis pe toţi cei din popor, aceştia au rămas în tabără până s-au vindecat.

9 a nd Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `To-day I have rolled the reproach of Egypt from off you;' and calleth the name of that place Gilgal unto this day.

Domnul i-a spus lui Iosua: „Astăzi am îndepărtat de peste voi ruşinea Egiptului!“ Şi locul acela a fost numit Ghilgal, nume care i-a rămas până în ziua de azi.

10 A nd the sons of Israel encamp in Gilgal, and make the passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho;

Israeliţii şi-au aşezat tabăra la Ghilgal, în câmpiile Ierihonului şi au sărbătorit Paştele în seara celei de-a paisprezecea zi a lunii.

11 a nd they eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow of the passover, unleavened things and roasted, in this self-same day;

În prima zi după Paşte, chiar în acea zi, au mâncat din roadele ţării: azime şi grăunţe prăjite.

12 a nd the manna doth cease on the morrow in their eating of the old corn of the land, and there hath been no more manna to the sons of Israel, and they eat of the increase of the land of Canaan in that year.

Mana a încetat la o zi după ce au mâncat din roadele Canaanului, astfel că israeliţii nu au mai avut mană şi, din anul acela, s-au hrănit din roadele ţării. Căpetenia oştirii Domnului

13 A nd it cometh to pass in Joshua's being by Jericho, that he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, one standing over-against him, and his drawn sword in his hand, and Joshua goeth unto him, and saith to him, `Art thou for us or for our adversaries?'

În timp ce era lângă Ierihon, Iosua şi-a ridicat privirea şi a observat un bărbat care stătea înaintea lui, ţinând în mână sabia scoasă din teacă. Iosua s-a dus spre el şi l-a întrebat: – Eşti dintre ai noştri sau dintre duşmanii noştri?

14 A nd He saith, `No, for I Prince of Jehovah's host; now I have come;' and Joshua falleth on his face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and saith to Him, `What is my Lord speaking unto His servant?'

– Nu, a răspuns el, ci eu sunt căpetenia oştirii Domnului şi tocmai am sosit. Iosua a căzut cu faţa la pământ înaintea lui, i s-a închinat şi l-a întrebat: – Ce spune stăpânul meu robului său?

15 A nd the Prince of Jehovah's host saith unto Joshua, `Cast off thy shoe from off thy foot, for the place on which thou art standing is holy;' and Joshua doth so;

– Dă-ţi jos sandalele din picioare, i-a răspuns căpetenia oştirii Domnului, căci locul pe care stai este sfânt. Şi Iosua a făcut întocmai.
