1 T o everything -- a season, and a time to every delight under the heavens:

„Pentru toate există o vreme, şi orice lucru de sub ceruri îşi are timpul său:

2 A time to bring forth, And a time to die. A time to plant, And a time to eradicate the planted.

un timp pentru a te naşte şi un timp pentru a muri; un timp pentru a sădi şi un timp pentru a smulge;

3 A time to slay, And a time to heal, A time to break down, And a time to build up.

un timp pentru a ucide şi un timp pentru a vindeca; un timp pentru a dărâma şi un timp pentru a zidi;

4 A time to weep, And a time to laugh. A time to mourn, And a time to skip.

un timp pentru a jeli şi un timp pentru a râde; un timp pentru a boci şi un timp pentru a dansa;

5 A time to cast away stones, And a time to heap up stones. A time to embrace, And a time to be far from embracing.

un timp pentru a arunca cu pietre şi un timp pentru a strânge pietre; un timp pentru a îmbrăţişa şi un timp pentru a fi departe de îmbrăţişări;

6 A time to seek, And a time to destroy. A time to keep, And a time to cast away.

un timp pentru a căuta şi un timp pentru a pierde; un timp pentru a păstra şi un timp pentru a arunca;

7 A time to rend, And a time to sew. A time to be silent, And a time to speak.

un timp pentru a rupe şi un timp pentru a coase; un timp pentru a tăcea şi un timp pentru a vorbi;

8 A time to love, And a time to hate. A time of war, And a time of peace.

un timp pentru a iubi şi un timp pentru a urî; un timp pentru război şi un timp pentru pace.

9 W hat advantage hath the doer in that which he is labouring at?

Ce câştig are lucrătorul din toată osteneala lui?

10 I have seen the travail that God hath given to the sons of man to be humbled by it.

Am văzut ce preocupare pune Dumnezeu în mintea oamenilor, ca să se îndeletnicească cu ea.

11 T he whole He hath made beautiful in its season; also, that knowledge He hath put in their heart without which man findeth not out the work that God hath done from the beginning even unto the end.

El a făcut toate lucrurile bune la timpul lor, a pus chiar şi veşnicia în inimile lor, dar omul nu poate pricepe de la început până la sfârşit lucrarea pe care a făcut-o Dumnezeu.

12 I have known that there is no good for them except to rejoice and to do good during their life,

Înţeleg că pentru oameni nu este nimic mai bun, decât să se bucure şi să facă ce este bine în viaţă.

13 y ea, even every man who eateth and hath drunk and seen good by all his labour, it a gift of God.

În plus, faptul că cineva poate mânca, poate bea şi poate duce un trai bun de pe urma întregii lui osteneli este un dar de la Dumnezeu.

14 I have known that all that God doth is to the age, to it nothing is to be added, and from it nothing is to be withdrawn; and God hath wrought that they do fear before Him.

Înţeleg că tot ceea ce face Dumnezeu durează veşnic; la aceasta nimic nu se adaugă şi nimic nu se scade; Dumnezeu face astfel pentru ca oamenii să se teamă de El.

15 W hat is that which hath been? already it is, and that which to be hath already been, and God requireth that which is pursued.

Ceea ce este, există de mult timp, ceea ce va fi, a existat deja demult, iar Dumnezeu va aduce înapoi ceea ce a trecut.

16 A nd again, I have seen under the sun the place of judgment -- there the wicked; and the place of righteousness -- there the wicked.

Am mai văzut ceva sub soare: Pe scaunul justiţiei trona răutatea, iar pe scaunul dreptăţii trona nedreptatea.

17 I said in my heart, `The righteous and the wicked doth God judge, for a time to every matter and for every work there.'

Atunci mi-am zis: «Dumnezeu îl va judeca atât pe cel drept, cât şi pe cel nedrept, căci atunci va fi timp pentru orice lucru şi pentru orice faptă.»

18 I said in my heart concerning the matter of the sons of man that God might cleanse them, so as to see that they themselves beasts.

Apoi mi-am zis: «În ceea ce-i priveşte pe oameni, Dumnezeu îi încearcă, pentru ca ei să vadă că sunt precum animalele.

19 F or an event the sons of man, and an event the beasts, even one event to them; as the death of this, so the death of that; and one spirit to all, and the advantage of man above the beast is nothing, for the whole vanity.

Căci soarta omului şi soarta animalului sunt una şi aceeaşi: cum moare unul, moare şi celălalt. Amândoi au aceeaşi suflare, iar omul nu are parte de nimic în plus faţă de animal. Totul este deşertăciune!

20 T he whole are going unto one place, the whole have been from the dust, and the whole are turning back unto the dust.

Totul merge în acelaşi loc, totul a fost făcut din ţărână şi totul se întoarce în ţărână.

21 W ho knoweth the spirit of the sons of man that is going up on high, and the spirit of the beast that is going down below to the earth?

Cine poate şti dacă sufletul omului merge sus, iar sufletul animalelor se coboară sub pământ?

22 A nd I have seen that there is nothing better than that man rejoice in his works, for it his portion; for who doth bring him in to look on that which is after him?

Am înţeles deci că nu există un alt lucru bun de care să se bucure omul, în afară de osteneala lui, căci aceasta este partea lui, şi cine îi poate spune omului ce va fi după el?»“
