1 A nd it cometh to pass, when it hath been heard by Sanballat, and Tobiah, and by Geshem the Arabian, and by the rest of our enemies, that I have builded the wall, and there hath not been left in it a breach, (also, till that time the doors I had not set up in the gates,)

Sanbalat, Tobia, arabul Gheşem şi ceilalţi duşmani ai noştri au fost înştiinţaţi că am reconstruit zidul şi că nu au mai rămas spărturi în el (pe vremea aceea încă nu pusesem uşile la porţi).

2 t hat Sanballat sendeth, also Geshem, unto me, saying, `Come and we meet together in the villages, in the valley of Ono;' and they are thinking to do to me evil.

Atunci Sanbalat şi Gheşem mi-au trimis următorul mesaj: „Hai să ne întâlnim într-unul din satele din valea Ono!“ Aveau însă de gând să-mi facă rău.

3 A nd I send unto them messengers, saying, `A great work I am doing, and I am not able to come down; why doth the work cease when I let it alone, and have come down unto you?'

Le-am trimis mesageri cu următorul răspuns: „Am o mare lucrare de făcut şi nu pot să vin. De ce să se oprească lucrul cât timp lipsesc ca să vin la voi?“

4 a nd they send unto me, according to this word, four times, and I return them according to this word.

Au trimis acelaşi mesaj de patru ori şi le-am răspuns la fel.

5 A nd Sanballat sendeth unto me, according to this word, a fifth time, his servant, and an open letter in his hand;

A cincea oară, Sanbalat mi-a trimis mesajul acesta prin slujitorul său, care ţinea în mână o scrisoare deschisă.

6 i t is written in it, `Among the nations it hath been heard, and Gashmu is saying: Thou and the Jews are thinking to rebel, therefore thou art building the wall, and thou hast been to them for a king -- according to these words!

În ea scria: „Se zvoneşte printre popoare – iar Gheşem spune la fel – că tu şi iudeii plănuiţi să vă răzvrătiţi şi de aceea reconstruieşti zidul. Potrivit aceluiaşi zvon, tu plănuieşti să le fii rege

7 A nd also, prophets thou hast appointed to call for thee in Jerusalem, saying, A king in Judah, and now it is heard by the king according to these words; and now come, and we take counsel together.'

şi chiar ai pus profeţi să dea de veste despre tine la Ierusalim şi să zică: «Este un rege în Iuda!» Vezi că lucrurile acestea vor ajunge la cunoştinţa împăratului, aşa că vino să ne sfătuim!“

8 A nd I send unto him, saying, `It hath not been according to these words that thou art saying, for from thine own heart thou art devising them;'

Atunci i-am trimis următorul răspuns: „Nu sunt adevărate cuvintele pe care le spui! Tu ai născocit toate acestea!“

9 f or all of them are making us afraid, saying, `Their hands are too feeble for the work, and it is not done;' and now, strengthen Thou my hands.

Ei toţi voiau să ne înfricoşeze şi îşi ziceau: „Vor lăsa lucrarea din mâini şi ea nu se va mai face!“ „Întăreşte-mi braţele!“, m-am rugat.

10 A nd I have entered the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabeel -- and he is restrained -- and he saith, `Let us meet at the house of God, at the inside of the temple, and we shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming in to slay thee -- yea, by night they are coming in to slay thee.'

M-am dus la Şemaia, fiul lui Delaia, fiul lui Mehetabel, care se închisese în casă, şi el mi-a zis: – Să ne întâlnim la Casa lui Dumnezeu, în mijlocul Templului, şi să închidem porţile Templului, căci vor veni să te ucidă! Da, noaptea vor veni să te ucidă!

11 A nd I say, `A man such as I -- doth he flee? and who as I, that doth go in unto the temple, and live? -- I do not go in.'

– Un om ca mine să fugă?! i-am răspuns eu. Un om ca mine să intre în Templu, ca să-şi scape viaţa?! Nu voi intra!

12 A nd I discern, and lo, God hath not sent him, for in the prophecy he hath spoken unto me both Tobiah and Sanballat hired him,

Mi-am dat seama că nu Dumnezeu îl trimisese, ci rostise profeţia împotriva mea, fiind tocmit de Tobia şi de Sanbalat.

13 s o that he an hireling, that I may fear and do so, and I had sinned, and it had been to them for an evil name that they may reproach me.

El fusese tocmit pentru ca, înfricoşându-mă, să fac după spusele lui şi să păcătuiesc. Atunci ei mi-ar fi scos nume rău pentru a mă face de ruşine.

14 B e mindful, O my God, of Tobiah, and of Sanballat, according to these his works, and also, of Noadiah the prophetess, and of the rest of the prophets who have been making me afraid.

„Dumnezeul meu, adu-Ţi aminte de Tobia şi de Sanbalat, precum şi de aceste fapte ale lor! Adu-Ţi aminte şi de profetesa Noadia, precum şi de ceilalţi profeţi care au vrut să mă înfricoşeze!“ Finalizarea construcţiei zidului

15 A nd the wall is completed in the twenty and fifth of Elul, on the fifty and second day;

Zidul a fost isprăvit în a douăzeci şi cincea zi a lunii Elul, în cincizeci şi două de zile.

16 a nd it cometh to pass, when all our enemies have heard, and all the nations who are round about us see, that they fall greatly in their own eyes, and know that by our God hath this work been done.

Toţi duşmanii noştri au auzit de lucrul acesta şi toate neamurile dimprejurul nostru s-au înfricoşat, s-au smerit foarte mult şi au recunoscut că noi am făcut lucrarea aceasta cu ajutorul Dumnezeului nostru.

17 A lso, in those days the freemen of Judah are multiplying their letters going unto Tobiah, and those of Tobiah are coming in unto them;

În acele zile mulţi dintre nobilii lui Iuda îi trimiteau scrisori lui Tobia.

18 f or many in Judah are sworn to him, for he son-in-law to Shechaniah son of Arah, and Jehohanan his son hath taken the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah;

Căci mulţi din Iuda erau legaţi cu el prin jurământ, deoarece era ginerele lui Şecania, fiul lui Arah, iar fiul său Iehohanan era căsătorit cu fiica lui Meşulam, fiul lui Berechia.

19 a lso, his good deeds they have been saying before me, and my words they have been taking out to him; letters hath Tobiah sent to make me afraid.

Aceştia vorbeau despre faptele lui bune în prezenţa mea, după care îl înştiinţau ce spuneam. Iar Tobia îmi trimitea scrisori ca să mă înfricoşeze.
