1 a nd Abimelech son of Jerubbaal goeth to Shechem, unto his mother's brethren, and speaketh unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

Abimelek, fiul lui Ierub-Baal, s-a dus la Şehem, la rudele sale dinspre mamă şi le-a zis atât lor, cât şi întregului clan al bunicului său:

2 ` Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which good for you -- the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man? -- and ye have remembered that I your bone and your flesh.'

„Vă rog să spuneţi în auzul tuturor locuitorilor din Şehem: «Ce este mai bine pentru voi: să domnească peste voi şaptezeci de bărbaţi, toţi fii ai lui Ierub-Baal, sau să domnească peste voi un singur bărbat? Aduceţi-vă aminte că sunt os din oasele voastre şi carne din carnea voastră!»“

3 A nd his mother's brethren speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclineth after Abimelech, for they said, `He our brother;'

Unchii lui au spus pentru el toate aceste cuvinte în auzul tuturor locuitorilor din Şehem, iar ei l-au acceptat în inima lor pe Abimelek căci îşi ziceau: «Este fratele nostru!»

4 a nd they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him;

I-au dat lui Abimelek şaptezeci de şecheli de argint din templul lui Baal-Berit, iar acesta a plătit cu ei nişte bărbaţi de nimic şi fără căpătâi, care au mers după el.

5 a nd he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden.

Apoi a venit la familia tatălui său, în Ofra şi i-a ucis pe o singură piatră pe fraţii lui, şaptezeci de bărbaţi, toţi fii ai lui Ierub-Baal. Însă Iotam, fiul cel mai tânăr al lui Ierub-Baal, a scăpat fiindcă se ascunsese.

6 A nd all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which in Shechem;

După aceea, toţi locuitorii din Şehem şi din Bet-Milo s-au strâns laolaltă şi au venit să-l întroneze pe Abimelek ca rege lângă terebintul din apropierea monumentului de la Şehem. Pilda lui Iotam

7 a nd they declare to Jotham, and he goeth and standeth on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifteth up his voice, and calleth, and saith to them, `Hearken unto me, O masters of Shechem, and God doth hearken unto you:

Când a auzit Iotam de lucrul acesta, s-a dus şi s-a aşezat pe vârful muntelui Garizim. Acolo le-a strigat spunându-le: „Ascultaţi-mă, locuitori ai Şehemului, ca şi Dumnezeu să vă asculte!

8 ` The trees have diligently gone to anoint over them a king, and they say to the olive, Reign thou over us.

Copacii au plecat să ungă un rege peste ei şi i-au zis măslinului: «Domneşte peste noi!»

9 A nd the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

Dar măslinul le-a răspuns: «Să-mi părăsesc eu uleiul meu prin care sunt onoraţi Dumnezeu şi oamenii, şi să mă duc să stăpânesc peste copaci?»

10 A nd the trees say to the fig, Come thou, reign over us.

Apoi copacii i-au zis smochinului: «Vino tu şi domneşte peste noi!»

11 A nd the fig saith to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

Dar smochinul le-a răspuns: «Să-mi părăsesc eu dulceaţa mea şi roadele mele cele bune, ca să stăpânesc peste copaci?»

12 ` And the trees say to the vine, Come thou, reign over us.

Atunci copacii i-au zis viţei-de-vie: «Vino tu şi domneşte peste noi!»

13 A nd the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

Dar viţa le-a răspuns: «Să-mi părăsesc eu mustul care aduce bucurie zeilor şi oamenilor şi să mă duc să stăpânesc peste copaci?»

14 A nd all the trees say unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us.

În cele din urmă toţi copacii i-au zis arborelui de jujuba: «Vino tu şi domneşte peste noi!»

15 A nd the bramble saith unto the trees, If in truth ye are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not -- fire cometh out from the bramble, and devoureth the cedars of Lebanon.

Jujuba le-a răspuns copacilor: «Dacă vreţi cu adevărat să mă ungeţi ca rege al vostru, veniţi şi adăpostiţi-vă sub umbra mea, dar dacă nu vreţi, atunci să iasă foc din jujuba şi să mistuie cedrii Libanului!»

16 ` And, now, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted, when ye make Abimelech king; and if ye have done good with Jerubbaal, and with his house; and if according to the deed of his hands ye have done to him --

Oare cu credincioşie şi în nevinovăţie aţi lucrat voi când l-aţi făcut rege pe Abimelek? V-aţi purtat voi bine cu Ierub-Baal şi familia lui? Şi oare i-aţi făcut voi după cum merita?

17 b ecause my father hath fought for you, and doth cast away his life from, and deliver you from the hand of Midian;

Căci tatăl meu s-a luptat pentru voi, şi-a riscat viaţa şi v-a eliberat din mâna lui Midian.

18 a nd ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he your brother --

Dar voi v-aţi ridicat astăzi împotriva familiei tatălui meu şi i-aţi ucis cei şaptezeci de fii pe o singură piatră! Apoi l-aţi întronat ca rege peste locuitorii Şehemului pe Abimelek, fiul slujnicei lui, şi asta pentru că este unul din poporul vostru!

19 y ea, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and he doth rejoice -- even he -- in you;

Dacă aţi lucrat astăzi cu credincioşie şi în nevinovăţie faţă de Ierub-Baal şi familia lui, atunci bucuraţi-vă de Abimelek şi Abimelek să se bucure de voi!

20 a nd if not -- fire cometh out from Abimelech and devoureth the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire cometh out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devoureth Abimelech.'

Dar dacă nu, să iasă foc din Abimelek şi să-i mistuie pe locuitorii din Şehem şi din Milo! Şi să iasă foc din locuitorii Şehemului şi din Bet-Milo ca să-l mistuie pe Abimelek!“

21 A nd Jotham hasteth, and fleeth, and goeth to Beer, and dwelleth there, from the face of Abimelech his brother.

Apoi Iotam a fugit, a scăpat şi s-a dus la Beer; şi a locuit acolo, departe de faţa fratelui său Abimelek. Dumnezeu pune capăt răutăţii lui Abimelek

22 A nd Abimelech is prince over Israel three years,

Abimelek stăpânea peste Israel de trei ani.

23 a nd God sendeth an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech,

Dumnezeu a trimis un duh rău între Abimelek şi locuitorii Şehemului şi astfel locuitorii Şehemului l-au trădat pe Abimelek,

24 f or the coming in of the violence the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and of their blood to place on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

pentru ca nelegiuirea săvârşită faţă de cei şaptezeci de fii ai lui Ierub-Baal să fie răzbunată şi sângele lor să cadă astfel asupra fratelui lor Abimelek, care i-a ucis, precum şi asupra locuitorilor din Şehem, care l-au ajutat pe acesta să-şi omoare fraţii.

25 A nd the masters of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the hills, and rob every one who passeth over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech.

Locuitorii din Şehem au pus la pândă pe vârfurile munţilor nişte oameni care-i jefuiau pe drumeţii ce treceau pe lângă ei. Lucrul acesta a fost adus la cunoştinţa lui Abimelek.

26 A nd Gaal son of Ebed cometh -- also his brethren -- and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him,

Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, a venit în Şehem şi locuitorii Şehemului şi-au pus încrederea în el.

27 a nd go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech.

El şi oamenii lui au ieşit la câmp, le-au cules viile şi au pus strugurii în teasc, după care au dat un ospăţ; au intrat în templul zeului lor, au mâncat, au băut şi l-au blestemat pe Abimelek.

28 A nd Gaal son of Ebed saith, `Who Abimelech, and who Shechem, that we serve him? is not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him -- we?

Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, zicea: „Cine este Abimelek şi cine este Şehem ca să-i slujim? Nu este el fiul lui Ierub-Baal şi nu este Zebul reprezentantul lui? E mai bine să slujiţi oamenilor lui Hamor, tatăl lui Şehem! De ce să-i slujim lui Abimelek?

29 a nd oh that this people were in my hand -- then I turn Abimelech aside;' and he saith to Abimelech, `Increase thy host, and come out.'

Ah, dacă ar fi cineva care să-i pună pe oamenii aceştia sub autoritatea mea! L-aş răsturna pe Abimelek! I-aş spune lui Abimelek: «Adună-ţi oştirea şi ieşi la luptă!» “

30 A nd Zebul, prince of the city, heareth the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burneth,

Zebul, conducătorul cetăţii, a auzit cuvintele lui Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, şi s-a aprins de mânie.

31 a nd he sendeth messengers unto Abimelech deceitfully, saying, `Lo, Gaal son of Ebed and his brethren are coming into Shechem, and lo, they are fortifying the city against thee;

A trimis pe ascuns nişte soli la Abimelek ca să-i spună: „Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, împreună cu fraţii săi au venit la Şehem şi răscoală cetatea împotriva ta!

32 a nd, now, rise by night, thou and the people who with thee, and lay wait in the field,

Pleacă noaptea împreună cu poporul care este cu tine şi stai la pândă în câmp!

33 a nd it hath been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, thou dost rise early, and hast pushed against the city; and lo, he and the people who with him are going out unto thee -- and thou hast done to him as thy hand doth find.'

Apoi să te scoli dimineaţa, înainte de răsăritul soarelui şi să te năpusteşti asupra cetăţii! Când Gaal şi poporul care este cu el vor ieşi împotriva ta, să le faci după cum vei putea!“

34 A nd Abimelech riseth, and all the people who with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem -- four detachments;

Abimelek şi tot poporul care era cu el s-au sculat noaptea şi s-au pus la pândă în patru cete lângă Şehem.

35 a nd Gaal son of Ebed goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech riseth -- also the people who with him -- from the ambush,

Când Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, a ieşit şi a stat la intrarea porţii cetăţii, Abimelek şi poporul care era cu el au ieşit din ascunzătoare.

36 a nd Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, `Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;' and Zebul saith unto him, `The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.'

Când a zărit poporul, Gaal i-a zis lui Zebul: – Văd un popor care se coboară de pe vârfurile munţilor! Zebul i-a răspuns: – Ceea ce vezi este umbra munţilor, nu oameni!

37 A nd Gaal addeth yet to speak, and saith, `Lo, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.'

Însă Gaal a zis din nou: – Este chiar un popor care se coboară dinspre centrul ţării, iar o ceată vine pe drumul dinspre stejarul prezicătorilor!

38 A nd Zebul saith unto him, `Where now thy mouth, in that thou sayest, Who Abimelech that we serve him? is not this the people against which thou hast kicked? go out, I pray thee now, and fight against it.'

Atunci Zebul i-a zis: – Unde îţi este acum curajul cu care ziceai: „Cine este Abimelek ca să-i slujim?“ Oare nu este acesta poporul pe care l-ai dispreţuit? Du-te acum şi luptă-te cu el!

39 A nd Gaal goeth out before the masters of Shechem, and fighteth against Abimelech,

Gaal a înaintat în fruntea locuitorilor din Şehem şi s-a luptat cu Abimelek.

40 a nd Abimelech pursueth him, and he fleeth from his presence, and many fall wounded -- unto the opening of the gate.

Abimelek l-a urmărit, dar acesta a reuşit să fugă dinaintea lui. Mulţi oameni au căzut răpuşi până spre intrarea porţii.

41 A nd Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem.

Apoi Abimelek a rămas în Aruma, iar Zebul i-a izgonit pe Gaal şi pe rudele lui, astfel că n-au mai rămas în Şehem.

42 A nd it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the people go out to the field, and they declare to Abimelech,

A doua zi, când poporul a ieşit la câmp, Abimelek a fost înştiinţat de lucrul acesta.

43 a nd he taketh the people, and divideth them into three detachments, and layeth wait in a field, and looketh, and lo, the people are coming out from the city, and he riseth against them, and smiteth them.

Şi-a luat oamenii, i-a împărţit în trei cete şi s-a pus la pândă în câmp. După ce s-a uitat şi a văzut că poporul ieşise din cetate, a pornit la luptă împotriva lui, atacându-l.

44 A nd Abimelech and the detachments who with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and smite them,

Abimelek şi cetele care erau cu el, au înaintat până la intrarea porţii cetăţii. Două din cete s-au năpustit asupra tuturor celor ce erau în câmp şi i-au ucis.

45 a nd Abimelech hath fought against the city all that day, and captureth the city, and the people who in it he hath slain, and he breaketh down the city, and soweth it salt.

Abimelek s-a luptat împotriva cetăţii toată ziua. După ce au cucerit-o şi au omorât poporul care era în ea, ei au dărâmat cetatea şi au presărat-o cu sare.

46 A nd all the masters of the tower of Shechem hear, and go in unto the high place of the house of the god Berith,

Când au auzit acest lucru, toţi locuitorii turnului Şehemului au intrat într-un refugiu din templul lui El-Berit.

47 a nd it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together,

I s-a adus la cunoştinţă lui Abimelek că toţi locuitorii turnului Şehemului s-au adăpostit acolo.

48 a nd Abimelech goeth up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people who with him, and Abimelech taketh the great axe in his hand, and cutteth off a bough of the trees, and lifteth it up, and setteth on his shoulder, and saith unto the people who with him, `What ye have seen I have done -- haste, do ye like it.'

Abimelek şi tot poporul care era cu el s-a suit pe muntele Ţalmon. A luat în mână un topor, a tăiat o creangă din copac şi a pus-o pe umăr. Apoi le-a zis oamenilor care erau cu el: „Aţi văzut ce am făcut eu; faceţi şi voi la fel!“

49 A nd all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women.

Fiecare bărbat din popor a tăiat câte o creangă şi l-a urmat pe Abimelek. Au aruncat crengile acelea peste refugiu şi i-au dat foc atât lui, cât şi oamenilor dinăuntru. Aşa au murit toţi locuitorii din turnul Şehemului, aproape o mie de bărbaţi şi femei.

50 A nd Abimelech goeth unto Thebez, and encampeth against Thebez, and captureth it,

După aceea Abimelek a înaintat împotriva Tebeţului, l-a împresurat şi l-a cucerit.

51 a nd a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.

În mijlocul cetăţii era un turn fortificat. Locuitorii cetăţii, bărbaţi şi femei, fugiseră acolo, se încuiaseră înăuntru şi se suiseră pe acoperişul turnului.

52 A nd Abimelech cometh unto the tower, and fighteth against it, and draweth nigh unto the opening of the tower to burn it with fire,

Abimelek a ajuns până la turn şi l-a asediat. Când s-a apropiat de uşa turnului ca să-i dea foc,

53 a nd a certain woman doth cast a piece of a rider on the head of Abimelech, and breaketh his skull,

o femeie a aruncat de pe zid piatra de sus a unei mori, care a căzut pe capul lui Abimelek şi i-a crăpat ţeasta.

54 a nd he calleth hastily unto the young man bearing his weapons, and saith to him, `Draw thy sword, and thou hast put me to death, lest they say of me -- A woman slew him;' and his young man pierced him through, and he dieth.

Atunci el l-a chemat repede pe cel care-i purta armele şi i-a zis: „Scoate-ţi sabia şi omoară-mă, ca nu cumva să se zică despre mine că m-a omorât o femeie!“ Slujitorul său l-a străpuns cu sabia şi el a murit.

55 A nd the men of Israel see that Abimelech dead, and go each one to his place;

Când au văzut israeliţii că Abimelek a murit, au plecat fiecare la casele lor.

56 a nd God turneth back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brethren;

Astfel, Dumnezeu a întors asupra lui Abimelek răul pe care acesta îl făcuse tatălui său atunci când şi-a ucis cei şaptezeci de fraţi.

57 a nd all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.

Tot răul făcut de locuitorii din Şehem, Dumnezeu l-a întors asupra capului lor. În acest fel a venit asupra lor blestemul lui Iotam, fiul lui Ierub-Baal.
