1 W ho as the wise? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? The wisdom of man causeth his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

„Cine este ca cel înţelept? Cine cunoaşte interpretarea lucrurilor? Înţelepciunea dă strălucire feţei omului şi-i schimbă asprimea feţei. Supune-te regelui

2 I pray thee, the commandment of a king keep, even for the sake of the oath of God.

Ascultă porunca regelui, îţi zic, din pricina jurământului încheiat cu Dumnezeu.

3 B e not troubled at his presence, thou mayest go, stand not in an evil thing, for all that he pleaseth he doth.

Nu te grăbi să pleci dinaintea lui şi nu căuta să susţii un lucru rău, căci el face tot ce-i place!

4 W here the word of a king power, and who saith to him, `What dost thou?'

Din moment ce cuvântul regelui are autoritate, cine îi poate spune: «Ce faci?».

5 W hoso is keeping a command knoweth no evil thing, and time and judgment the heart of the wise knoweth.

Pe cel ce-i păzeşte porunca, nu-l va atinge nici un rău, iar inima înţeleptului cunoaşte vremea potrivită şi judecata,

6 F or to every delight there is a time and a judgment, for the misfortune of man is great upon him.

căci pentru fiecare lucru există un timp şi o judecată, deşi nenorocirea omului este mare peste el;

7 F or he knoweth not that which shall be, for when it shall be who declareth to him?

într-adevăr el nu ştie ce se va întâmpla, căci nimeni nu-i poate face cunoscut lucrul acesta.

8 T here is no man ruling over the spirit to restrain the spirit, and there is no authority over the day of death, and there is no discharge in battle, and wickedness delivereth not its possessors.

La fel cum nimeni nu are putere asupra vântului, ca să-l poată închide, tot aşa nimeni nu are putere asupra zilei morţii. Şi după cum nimeni nu este scuzat în vreme de război, tot aşa nici răutatea nu-i va lăsa să scape pe cei ce o practică. Cei răi şi cei drepţi

9 A ll this I have seen so as to give my heart to every work that hath been done under the sun; a time that man hath ruled over man to his own evil.

Am văzut toate aceste lucruri şi am încercat să înţeleg toate lucrările care se fac sub soare. Există un timp când un om are autoritate asupra altui om şi-i poate face rău.

10 A nd so I have seen the wicked buried, and they went in, even from the Holy Place they go, and they are forgotten in the city whether they had so done. This also vanity.

Apoi i-am văzut pe cei răi îngropaţi – ei obişnuiau să vină şi să plece de la Sfântul Lăcaş, fiind apoi lăudaţi în cetatea în care făceau astfel. Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune!

11 B ecause sentence hath not been done an evil work speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of man is full within them to do evil.

Când sentinţa împotriva faptei rele nu se împlineşte repede, inima muritorilor se umple de planuri ca să facă rău.

12 T hough a sinner is doing evil a hundred, and prolonging for it, surely also I know that there is good to those fearing God, who fear before Him.

Chiar dacă celui păcătos, deşi face rău însutit, i se lungeşte viaţa, eu însă ştiu că celui ce se teme de Dumnezeu, celui ce stă temător înaintea Sa, îi va fi bine.

13 A nd good is not to the wicked, and he doth not prolong days as a shadow, because he is not fearing before God.

Totuşi cel rău nu este fericit şi nu-şi va lungi zilele, fiind precum umbra, pentru că nu se teme de Dumnezeu.

14 T here is a vanity that hath been done upon the earth, that there are righteous ones unto whom it is coming according to the work of the wicked, and there are wicked ones unto whom it is coming according to the work of the righteous. I have said that this also vanity.

Există o deşertăciune care are loc pe pământ, şi anume: sunt oameni drepţi peste care vine ceea ce merită cei răi şi sunt oameni nedrepţi peste care vine ceea ce merită cei drepţi. Prin urmare, mi-am zis: «Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune!»

15 A nd I have praised mirth because there is no good to man under the sun except to eat and to drink, and to rejoice, and it remaineth with him of his labour the days of his life that God hath given to him under the sun.

Atunci am lăudat veselia, căci nu este nimic mai plăcut omului sub soare decât să mănânce, să bea şi să se bucure, iar bucuria îl va însoţi în osteneala sa în toate zilele vieţii sale, pe care le-a primit de la Dumnezeu sub soare.

16 W hen I gave my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that hath been done on the earth, (for there is also a spectator in whose eyes sleep is not by day and by night),

M-am dedicat cunoaşterii înţelepciunii şi priceperii tuturor lucrărilor care se fac pe pământ, căci omul nu îşi odihneşte ochii nici ziua, nici noaptea.

17 t hen I considered all the work of God, that man is not able to find out the work that hath been done under the sun, because though man labour to seek, yet he doth not find; and even though the wise man speak of knowing he is not able to find.

Am înţeles că toate lucrările lui Dumnezeu, toate lucrările care se fac sub soare, nu pot fi pricepute de om. Chiar dacă omul se străduieşte să le cerceteze, nu va găsi răspuns şi, chiar dacă înţeleptul pretinde că deţine cunoaşterea, el nu poate să priceapă.“
