1 P oi l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Non aver paura e non sgomentarti. Prendi con te tutti gli uomini di guerra, levati e sali contro Ai. Vedi, io ti do nelle mani il re di Ai, il suo popolo, la sua città e il suo paese.

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Fear not, nor be affrighted, take with thee all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,

2 E tu farai ad Ai e al suo re come hai fatto a Gerico e al suo re; prenderete per voi unicamente il suo bottino e il suo bestiame. Tendi un'imboscata contro la città dietro ad essa».

and thou hast done to Ai and to her king as thou hast done to Jericho and to her king; only, its spoil and its cattle ye spoil for yourselves; set for thee an ambush for the city at its rear.'

3 C osì Giosuè e tutti gli uomini di guerra si levarono per salire contro Ai. Egli scelse trentamila uomini, guerrieri valorosi, e li fece partire di notte,

And Joshua riseth, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooseth thirty thousand men, mighty ones of valour, and sendeth them away by night,

4 e comandò loro, dicendo: «Ecco, voi starete in agguato contro la città, proprio dietro la città; non allontanatevi troppo dalla città, ma state tutti pronti.

and commandeth them, saying, `See, ye are liers in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, ye go not very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,

5 P oi io e tutta la gente che è con me ci avvicineremo alla città; e quando essi usciranno contro di noi come la prima volta, noi ci daremo alla fuga davanti a loro.

and I and all the people who with me draw near unto the city, and it hath come to pass when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

6 E ssi usciranno ad inseguirci finché noi li avremo tirati lontani dalla città, perché diranno: "Fuggono davanti a noi come la prima volta". E, mentre noi fuggiremo davanti a loro,

and they have come out after us till we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

7 v oi uscirete dall'agguato e prenderete la città, perché l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, la darà nelle vostre mani.

and ye rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and Jehovah your God hath given it into your hand;

8 C ome avrete preso la città, darete alle fiamme la città; farete come l'Eterno ha comandato. Fate attenzione, questo è l'ordine che io vi do».

and it hath been, when ye capture the city, ye burn the city with fire, according to the word of Jehovah ye do, see, I have commanded you.'

9 C osì Giosué li mandò, ed essi andarono al luogo dell'agguato e si fermarono fra Bethel e Ai, dal lato ovest di Ai; ma Giosuè rimase quella notte in mezzo al popolo.

And Joshua sendeth them away, and they go unto the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodgeth on that night in the midst of the people.

10 G iosuè si alzò quindi al mattino presto, passò in rivista il popolo e salì con gli anziani d'Israele alla testa del popolo contro Ai.

And Joshua riseth early in the morning, and inspecteth the people, and goeth up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai;

11 T utti gli uomini di guerra che erano con lui salirono e si avvicinarono; così giunsero di fronte alla città e si accamparono a nord di Ai. Tra loro ed Ai c'era una valle.

and all the people of war who with him have gone up, and draw nigh and come in over-against the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley between him and Ai.

12 A llora egli prese circa cinquemila uomini e li mise in agguato fra Bethel ed Ai, a ovest della città.

And he taketh about five thousand men, and setteth them an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;

13 D opo che il popolo ebbe preso posizione, l'accampamento centrale era a nord della città e gli uomini in agguato a ovest della città, Giosuè quella notte si spinse avanti in mezzo alla valle.

and they set the people, all the camp which on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and Joshua goeth on that night into the midst of the valley.

14 Q uando il re di Ai si accorse di questo, gli uomini della città si alzarono in fretta al mattino presto e uscirono a combattere contro Israele, il re e tutto il suo popolo, al punto convenuto di fronte all'Arabah; ma il re non sapeva che c'era un agguato contro di lui dietro la città.

And it cometh to pass, when the king of Ai seeth, that hasten, and rise early, and go out do the men of the city to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed season, at the front of the plain, and he hath not known that an ambush against him, on the rear of the city.

15 A llora Giosuè e tutto Israele, fingendo di essere battuti di fronte a loro, fuggirono in direzione del deserto.

And Joshua and all Israel stricken before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,

16 T utto il popolo che era nella città fu chiamato a raccolta per inseguirli; così inseguirono Giosuè e furono attirati lontano dalla città.

and all the people who in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,

17 N on ci fu uomo in Ai e in Bethel, che non uscisse dietro a Israele. Lasciarono così la città aperta e inseguirono Israele.

and there hath not been left a man in Ai and Bethel who hath not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.

18 A llora l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Stendi la lancia che hai in mano verso Ai, perché io te la darò nelle mani». E Giosuè stese la lancia che aveva in mano verso la città.

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Stretch out with the javelin which in thy hand towards Ai, for into thy hand I give it;' and Joshua stretcheth out with the javelin which in his hand toward the city,

19 C ome egli ebbe steso la mano, gli uomini in agguato si levarono in fretta dal loro posto, entrarono nella città, la presero, e si affrettarono a darla alle fiamme.

and the ambush hath risen haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hasten, and burn the city with fire.

20 Q uando gli uomini di Ai si voltarono indietro, ecco, essi videro il fumo della città che saliva al cielo; e non vi fu per loro alcuna possibilità di fuggire né da una parte né dall'altra, perché il popolo che fuggiva in direzione del deserto si voltò contro quei che lo inseguivano.

And the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and lo, the smoke of the city hath gone up unto the heavens, and there hath not been in them power to flee hither and thither -- and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer, --

21 I nfatti, quando Giosuè e tutto Israele videro che gli uomini in agguato avevano preso la città e che il fumo della città si alzava in alto, tornarono indietro e batterono gli uomini di Ai.

and Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush hath captured the city, and that the smoke of the city hath gone up, and they turn back and smite the men of Ai;

22 A nche gli altri uscirono dalla città contro di loro; così quelli di Ai si trovarono intrappolati in mezzo alle forze d'Israele, avendo gli uni da un lato e gli atri dall'altro; e li batterono finché non rimase piú alcun superstite o fuggiasco.

and these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that, and they smite them till he hath not left to them a remnant and escaped one;

23 M a il re di Ai lo presero vivo e lo condussero da Giosuè.

and the king of Ai they caught alive, and bring him near unto Joshua.

24 Q uando Israele ebbe finito di uccidere tutti gli abitanti di Ai nella campagna e nel deserto dove essi lo avevano inseguito, e furono tutti passati a fil di spada finché furono tutti sterminati, tutto Israele tornò verso Ai e la mise a fil di spada.

And it cometh to pass, at Israel's finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and they fall all of them by the mouth of the sword till their consumption), that all Israel turn back to Ai, and smite it by the mouth of the sword;

25 T utti quei che caddero in quel giorno, uomini e donne, furono dodicimila, tutta la gente di Ai.

and all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand -- all men of Ai.

26 G iosuè non ritirò la mano che brandiva la lancia, finché non ebbe sterminato tutti gli abitanti di Ai.

And Joshua hath not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin till that he hath devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;

27 I sraele prese per se soltanto il bestiame e il bottino di quella città, secondo l'ordine che l'Eterno aveva dato a Giosuè.

only, the cattle and the spoil of that city have Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of Jehovah which He commanded Joshua.

28 C osì Giosuè arse Ai e la ridusse a un cumulo di rovine per sempre, una desolazione fino a questo giorno.

And Joshua burneth Ai, and maketh it a heap age-during -- a desolation unto this day;

29 F ece quindi appendere il re di Ai ad un albero e ve lo lasciò fino alla sera; al tramonto del sole, Giosuè ordinò che il suo cadavere fosse calato dall'albero, fosse gettato all'ingresso della porta della città e vi ammassarono sopra un grande mucchio di pietre, che rimane fino ad oggi.

and the king of Ai he hath hanged on the tree till even-time, and at the going in of the sun hath Joshua commanded, and they take down his carcase from the tree, and cast it unto the opening of the gate of the city, and raise over it a great heap of stones till this day.

30 A llora Giosuè edificò un altare all'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, sul monte Ebal,

Then doth Joshua build an altar to Jehovah, God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

31 c ome Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, aveva comandato ai figli d'Israele, come sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, un altare di pietre intatte sulle quali nessuno aveva passato alcun strumento di ferro; poi su di esso offrirono olocausti all'Eterno e fecero sacrifici di ringraziamento.

as Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses -- an altar of whole stones, over which he hath not waved iron -- and they cause to go up upon it burnt-offerings to Jehovah, and sacrifice peace-offerings;

32 L à Giosuè scrisse su pietre una copia della legge, che Mosè aveva scritto in presenza dei figli d'Israele.

and he writeth there on the stones the copy of the law of Moses, which he hath written in the presence of the sons of Israel.

33 T utto Israele, tanto gli stranieri che gl'Israeliti di nascita, i suoi anziani, i suoi ufficiali e i suoi giudici stavano in piedi ai due lati dell'arca, di fronte ai sacerdoti levitici che portavano l'arca del patto dell'Eterno, una metà di fronte al monte Gherizim, l'altra metà di fronte al monte Ebal, come Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, aveva prima comandato, per benedire il popolo d'Israele.

And all Israel, and its elders, and authorities, and its judges, are standing on this side and on that of the ark, over-against the priests, the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the native, half of them over-against mount Gerizim, and the half of them over-against mount Ebal, as Moses servant of Jehovah commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.

34 D opo questo, Giosuè lesse tutte le parole della legge, le benedizioni e le maledizioni, secondo tutto ciò che è scritto nel libro della legge.

And afterwards he hath proclaimed all the words of the law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the book of the law;

35 N on vi fu parola di tutto ciò che Mosè aveva comandato, che Giosuè non leggesse davanti a tutta l'assemblea d'Israele, comprese le donne, i bambini e gli stranieri che risiedevano in mezzo a loro.

there hath not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua hath not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.
