1 Q uando il re Ezechia udí queste cose, si stracciò le vesti, si coprí di sacco ed entrò nella casa dell'Eterno.

And it cometh to pass, at king Hezekiah's hearing, that he rendeth his garments, and covereth himself with sackcloth, and entereth the house of Jehovah,

2 Q uindi mandò Eliakim, prefetto del palazzo, Scebna il segretario e gli anziani dei sacerdoti, coperti di sacco, dal profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots.

and sendeth Eliakim, who over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covering themselves with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet, son of Amoz,

3 E ssi gli dissero: «Cosí dice Ezechia: "Questo giorno è un giorno di angoscia di castigo e di vergogna, perché i figli stanno per nascere, ma non c'è forza per partorirli.

and they say unto him, `Thus said Hezekiah -- A day of distress, and rebuke, and despising this day; for come have sons unto the birth, and power there is not to bring forth.

4 F orse l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ha udito tutte le parole di Rabshakeh, che il re di Assiria, suo signore, ha mandato a insultare il DIO vivente, e lo castigherà a motivo delle parole che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO ha udito Innalza dunque una preghiera per il residuo che ancora rimane"»

`It may be Jehovah thy God doth hear all the words of the chief of the butlers with which the king of Asshur his lord hath sent him to reproach the living God, and hath decided concerning the words that Jehovah thy God hath heard, and thou hast lifted up prayer for the remnant that is found.'

5 C osí i servi del re Ezechia si recarono da Isaia.

And the servants of king Hezekiah come in unto Isaiah,

6 E Isaia disse loro: «Questo direte al vostro signore: Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Non aver paura a motivo delle parole che hai udito, con le quali i servi del re di Assiria mi hanno insultato.

and Isaiah saith to them, `Thus do ye say unto your lord: Thus said Jehovah, Be not afraid because of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Asshur have reviled Me.

7 E cco, io manderò su di lui uno spirito e, appena avrà udito una certa notizia, ritornerà al suo paese, e nel suo paese io lo farò cadere di spada"».

Lo, I am giving in him a spirit, and he hath heard a report, and hath turned back to his land, and I have caused him to fall by the sword in his land.'

8 C osí Rabshakeh ritornò e trovò il re di Assiria che assediava Libnah, perché aveva saputo che egli era partito da Lakish.

And the chief of the butlers turneth back and findeth the king of Asshur fighting against Libnah, for he hath heard that he hath journeyed from Lachish.

9 O r egli ricevette notizie di Tirhakah, re d'Etiopia, che dicevano: «Ecco, si è mosso per combattere contro di te». Allora egli mandò di nuovo messaggeri a Ezechia, dicendo:

And he heareth concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, saying, `Lo, he hath come out to fight with thee;' and he turneth and sendeth messengers unto Hezekiah, saying,

10 « Parlerete cosí a Ezechia, re di Giuda, dicendo: "Non lasciare che il tuo DIO, nel quale confidi, t'inganni dicendo: Gerusalemme non sarà data nelle mani del re di Assiria.

`Thus do ye speak unto Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God lift thee up in whom thou art trusting, saying, Jerusalem is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

11 E cco, tu hai udito ciò che i re di Assiria hanno fatto a tutti i paesi, votandoli alla distruzione. Scamperesti tu soltanto?

Lo, thou hast heard that which the kings of Asshur have done to all the lands -- to devote them; and thou art delivered!

12 H anno forse gli dèi delle nazioni liberato quelli che i miei padri hanno distrutto: Gozan, Haran, Retsef e i figli di Eden che erano a Telassar?

did the gods of the nations deliver them whom my fathers destroyed -- Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden, who in Thelassar?

13 D ov'è il re di Hamath, il re di Arpad e il re della città di Sefarvaim, di Hena d'Ivvah?"».

Where the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?'

14 E zechia prese la lettera dalle man dei messaggeri e la lesse; poi salí alla casa dell'Eterno e la distese davanti all 'Eterno.

And Hezekiah taketh the letters out of the hand of the messengers, and readeth them, and goeth up to the house of Jehovah, and Hezekiah spreadeth it before Jehovah.

15 P oi Ezechia pregò davanti all'Eterno, dicendo: «O Eterno, DIO d'Israele, che siedi sopra i cherubini, tu sei DIO, tu solo, di tutti i regni della terra. Tu hai fatto i cieli e la terra.

And Hezekiah prayeth before Jehovah, and saith, `O Jehovah, God of Israel, inhabiting the cherubs, Thou God Himself -- Thyself alone -- to all the kingdoms of the earth: Thou hast made the heavens and the earth.

16 P orgi il tuo orecchio, o Eterno, e ascolta; apri i tuoi occhi, o Eterno, e guarda! Ascolta le parole di Sennacherib, che ha mandato quest'uomo per insultare il DIO vivente!

Incline, O Jehovah, Thine ear, and hear; open, O Jehovah, Thine eyes, and see; and hear Thou the words of Sennacherib with which he hath sent him to reproach the living God.

17 E ' vero, o Eterno, che i re di Assiria hanno devastato le nazioni e i loro paesi,

`Truly, O Jehovah, kings of Asshur have laid waste the nations, and their land,

18 e hanno gettato nel fuoco i loro dèi, perché quelli non erano dèi, ma opera delle mani d'uomo, legno e pietra; per questo li hanno distrutti.

and have put their gods into fire, for they no gods, but work of the hands of man, wood and stone, and destroy them.

19 M a ora, o Eterno, DIO nostro, salvaci, ti prego, dalle sue mani, affinché tutti i regni della terra sappiano che tu solo, o Eterno, sei DIO».

And now, O Jehovah our God, save us, we pray Thee, out of his hand, and know do all kingdoms of the earth that Thou Jehovah God -- Thyself alone.'

20 A llora Isaia, figlio di Amots, mandò a dire a Ezechia: «Cosí parla l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: "Ho udito la preghiera che tu mi hai rivolto riguardo a Sennacherib, re di Assiria.

And Isaiah son of Amoz sendeth unto Hezekiah, saying, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed unto Me concerning Sennacherib king of Asshur I have heard:

21 Q uesta è la parola che l'Eterno ha pronunciato contro di lui: La vergine figlia di Sion ti disprezza e si fa beffe di te la figlia di Gerusalemme scuote il capo dietro a te.

this the word that Jehovah spake concerning him: `Trampled on thee -- laughed at thee, Hath the virgin daughter of Zion Behind thee shaken the head -- Hath the daughter of Jerusalem?

22 C hi hai insultato e oltraggiato? Contro chi hai alzato la voce e arrogantemente levato i tuoi occhi? Contro il Santo d'Israele!

Whom hast thou reproached and reviled? And against whom lifted up a voice? Yea, thou dost lift up on high thine eyes -- Against the Holy One of Israel!

23 P er mezzo dei tuoi messaggeri hai insultato il Signore e hai detto: "Con la moltitudine dei miei carri sono salito in cima ai monti, nei recessi del Libano. Abbatterò i suoi cedri piú alti e i suoi cipressi piú belli; giungerò al suo rifugio piú remoto nella parte piú lussureggiante della foresta.

By the hand of thy messengers Thou hast reproached the Lord, and sayest: In the multitude of my chariots I have come up to a high place of mountains -- The sides of Lebanon, And I cut down the height of its cedars, The choice of its firs, And I enter the lodging of its extremity, The forest of its Carmel.

24 I o ho scavato e ho bevuto acque straniere; con la pianta dei miei piedi ho disseccato tutti i fiumi d'Egitto".

I have digged, and drunk strange waters, And I dry up with the sole of my steps All floods of a bulwark.

25 N on hai forse udito che da lungo tempo ho preparato questo e dai tempi antichi ne ho formato il disegno? E ora ho fatto accadere questo: che tu riducessi in cumuli di rovine città fortificate.

Hast thou not heard from afar, it I made, From days of old that I formed it? Now I have brought it in, And it becometh a desolation, Ruinous heaps fenced cities,

26 P erciò i loro abitanti, privi di forza, erano spaventati e confusi; erano come l'erba dei campi, come l'erbetta verde come l'erba sui tetti, che è bruciata prima che cresca.

And their inhabitants feeble-handed, They were broken down, and are dried up, They have been the herb of the field, And the greenness of the tender grass, Grass of the roofs, And blasted corn -- before it hath risen up!

27 M a io conosco il tuo sederti, il tuo uscire e il tuo entrare e anche il tuo infuriarti contro di me.

And thy sitting down, and thy going out, And thy coming in, I have known, And thine anger towards Me;

28 P oiché questo tuo infuriarti contro di me e la tua arroganza sono giunti alle mie orecchie, ti metterò il mio anello alle narici, il mio morso in bocca, e ti farò ritornare per la strada per la quale sei venuto".

Because of thine anger towards Me, And thy noise -- it came up into Mine ears, I have put My hook in thy nose, And My bridle in thy lips, And have caused thee to turn back, In the way in which thou camest.

29 Q uesto sarà il segno per te: Quest'anno mangerete ciò che cresce spontaneamente, il secondo anno ciò che nasce dallo stesso, ma il terzo anno seminerete e mieterete, pianterete vigne e ne mangerete il frutto.

And this to thee the sign, Food of the year the spontaneous growth, And in the second year the self-produced, And in the third year sow ye, and reap, And plant vineyards, and eat their fruits.

30 I l residuo della casa di Giuda che scamperà, continuerà a mettere radici in basso e a fare frutto in alto.

And it hath continued -- The escaped of the house of Judah That hath been left -- to take root beneath, And hath made fruit upward.

31 P oiché da Gerusalemme, uscirà un residuo e dal monte Sion quelli che sono scampati. Lo zelo dell'Eterno degli eserciti farà questo.

For from Jerusalem goeth out a remnant, And an escape from mount Zion; The zeal of Jehovah doth this.

32 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno riguardo al re di Assiria: "Egli non entrerà in questa città né vi lancerà freccia, non le verrà davanti con scudi né costruirà contro di essa alcun terrapieno.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah, Concerning the king of Asshur: He doth not come in unto this city, Nor doth he shoot there an arrow, Nor doth he come before it with shield. Nor doth he pour out against it a mount.

33 E gli ritornerà per la stessa strada da cui è venuto, e non entrerà in questa città, dice l'Eterno.

In the way that he cometh in -- In it he turneth back, And unto this city he doth not come in, The affirmation of Jehovah --

34 I o proteggerò questa città per salvarla, per amore di me stesso e per amore di Davide mio servo"».

And I have covered over this city, To save it, for Mine own sake, And for the sake of David My servant.'

35 Q uella notte avvenne che l'angelo dell'Eterno uscí e uccise nell'accampamento degli Assiri centottantacinquemila uomini; quando la gente si alzò al mattino, ecco, erano tutti cadaveri.

And it cometh to pass, in that night, that a messenger of Jehovah goeth out, and smiteth in the camp of Asshur a hundred eighty and five thousand, and they rise early in the morning, and lo, all of them dead corpses.

36 A llora Sennacherib re di Assiria levò le tende, partí e fece ritorno a casa e rimase a Ninive.

And Sennacherib king of Asshur journeyeth, and goeth, and turneth back, and dwelleth in Nineveh;

37 E avvenne che, mentre egli stava adorando nella casa del suo dio Nisrok, i suoi figli Adrammelek e Sharetser lo uccisero a colpi di spada; poi si rifugiarono nel paese di Ararat. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Esarhaddon.

and it cometh to pass, he is bowing himself in the house of Nisroch his god, and Adramelech and Sharezar have smitten him with the sword, and they have escaped to the land of Ararat, and Esar-Haddon his son reigneth in his stead.
