1 P oi l'Eterno parlò a Giosuè, dicendo:

And Jehovah speaketh unto Joshua, saying,

2 « Parla ai figli d'Israele e di' loro: stabilitevi le città di rifugio, di cui vi parlai per mezzo di Mosè,

`Speak unto the sons of Israel, saying, Give for you cities of refuge, as I have spoken unto you by the hand of Moses,

3 a ffinché vi si possa rifugiare l'omicida che ha ucciso qualcuno involontariamente e senza premeditazione; esse vi serviranno di rifugio contro il vendicatore del sangue.

for the fleeing thither of a man-slayer smiting life inadvertently, without knowledge; and they have been to you for a refuge from the redeemer of blood.

4 Q uando l'omicida fuggirà a una di quelle città, si fermerà all'ingresso della porta della città ed esporrà il suo caso agli anziani di quella città; essi lo accoglieranno in città con loro e gli daranno un posto, ed egli abiterà fra di loro.

`When hath fled unto one of these cities, and hath stood the opening of the gate of the city, and hath spoken in the ears of the elders of that city his matter, then they have gathered him into the city unto them, and have given to him a place, and he hath dwelt with them.

5 S e il vendicatore del sangue lo inseguirà, essi non gli daranno nelle mani l'omicida, perché egli ha ucciso il suo prossimo senza premeditazione, senza averlo odiato prima.

`And when the redeemer of blood doth pursue after him, then they do not shut up the man-slayer into his hand, for without knowledge he hath smitten his neighbour, and is not hating him hitherto;

6 L 'omicida rimarrà in quella città finché, alla morte del sommo sacerdote che sarà in carica in quei giorni, comparirà in giudizio davanti all'assemblea. Allora l'omicida potrà tornare e rientrare nella sua città e nella sua casa nella città dalla quale era fuggito».

and he hath dwelt in that city till his standing before the company for judgment, till the death of the chief priest who is in those days -- then doth the man-slayer turn back and hath come unto his city, and unto his house, unto the city whence he fled.'

7 E ssi dunque designarono Kedesh in Galilea, nella regione montuosa di Neftali, Sichem nella regione montuosa di Efraim e Kiath-Arba, (che è Hebron), nella regione montuosa di Giuda.

And they sanctify Kedesh in Galilee, in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kirjath-Arba (it Hebron), in the hill-country of Judah;

8 E al di là del Giordano, ad est di Gerico, stabilirono Betser nel deserto sull'altopiano della tribú di Ruben, Ramoth in Galaad della tribú di Gad é Golan in Bashan della tribú di Manasse.

and beyond the Jordan, Jericho eastward, they have given Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

9 Q ueste furono le città assegnate a tutti i figli d'Israele e allo straniero che risiedeva fra di loro, affinché chiunque avesse ucciso qualcuno involontariamente potesse rifugiarvisi e non essere ucciso dal vendicatore del sangue, prima di essere comparso davanti all'assemblea.

These have been cities of meeting for all the sons of Israel, and for a sojourner who is sojourning in their midst, for the fleeing thither of any one smiting life inadvertently, and he doth not die by the hand of the redeemer of blood till his standing before the company.
