1 L a parola dell'Eterno che fu rivolta a Sofonia, figlio di Kusci, figlio di Ghedaliah, figlio di Amariah, figlio di Ezechia, ai giorni di Giosia figlio di Amon, re di Giuda.

A word of Jehovah that hath been unto Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezikiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amoz, king of Judah:

2 « IO farò interamente scomparire ogni cosa dalla faccia della terra», dice l'Eterno.

I utterly consume all from off the face of the ground, An affirmation of Jehovah.

3 « Farò scomparire uomini e bestie, farò scomparire gli uccelli del cielo e i pesci del mare, le cause di peccato assieme agli empi, e sterminerò l'uomo dalla faccia della terra», dice l'Eterno.

I consume man and beast, I consume fowl of the heavens, and fishes of the sea, And the stumbling-blocks -- the wicked, And I have cut off man from the face of the ground, An affirmation of Jehovah,

4 « Stenderò la mia mano contro Giuda e contro tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e sterminerò da questo luogo i resti di Baal, il nome dei sacerdoti idolatria assieme ai sacerdoti,

And stretched out My hand against Judah, And against all inhabiting Jerusalem, And cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, The name of the idolatrous priests, with the priests,

5 q uelli che si prostrano sui terrazzi davanti all'esercito del cielo, quelli che si prostrano giurando all'Eterno, ma giurando anche a Malkam,

And those bowing themselves On the roofs to the host of the heavens, And those bowing themselves, Swearing to Jehovah, and swearing by Malcham,

6 q uelli che si allontanano dall'Eterno e quelli che non cercano l'Eterno e non lo consultano.

And those removing from after Jehovah, And who have not sought Jehovah, nor besought Him.

7 S ta' in silenzio davanti al Signore, l'Eterno, perché il giorno dell'Eterno è vicino, perché l'Eterno ha preparato un sacrificio, ha santificato i suoi convitati.

Hush! because of the Lord Jehovah, For near a day of Jehovah, For prepared hath Jehovah a sacrifice, He hath sanctified His invited ones.

8 N el giorno del sacrificio dell'Eterno avverrà che io punirò i principi, i figli del re e tutti quelli che indossano vesti straniere.

And it hath come to pass, In the day of the sacrifice of Jehovah, That I have laid a charge on the heads, And on sons of the king, And on all putting on strange clothing.

9 I n quello stesso giorno punirò tutti quelli che saltano sopra la soglia, che riempiono di violenza e di inganno le case dei loro padroni.

And I have laid a charge on every one Who is leaping over the threshold in that day, Who are filling the house of their masters violence and deceit.

10 I n quel giorno», dice l'Eterno, «si alzerà un grido dalla porta dei pesci, un urlo dal secondo quartiere e un gran fracasso dalle colline.

And there hath been in that day, An affirmation of Jehovah, The noise of a cry from the fish-gate, And of a howling from the Second, And of great destruction from the hills.

11 U rlate, o abitanti di Maktesh, perché tutto il popolo dei mercanti è annientato, tutti quelli carichi di denaro sono sterminati.

Howl, ye inhabitants of the hollow place, For cut off hath been all the merchant people, Cut off have been all bearing silver.

12 I n quel tempo avverrà che io frugherò Gerusalemme con lampade e punirò gli uomini che, fermi sulle loro fecce, dicono in cuor loro: "L'Eterno non fa né bene né male".

And it hath come to pass, at that time, I search Jerusalem with lights, And I have laid a charge on the men Who are hardened on their preserved things, Who are saying in their heart: Jehovah doth no good, nor doth He evil.

13 P erciò i loro beni diventeranno bottino di guerra e le loro case una desolazione. Costruiranno case, pianteranno vigne, ma non ne berranno il vino».

And their wealth hath been for a spoil, And their houses for desolation, And they have built houses, and do not inhabit, And they have planted vineyards, And they do not drink their wine.

14 I l giorno dell'Eterno è vicino, è vicino e giunge in gran fretta. Il suono del giorno dell'Eterno è amaro; allora l'uomo valoroso griderà forte.

Near the great day of Jehovah, Near, and hasting exceedingly, The noise of the day of Jehovah, Bitterly shriek there doth a mighty one.

15 Q uel giorno è un giorno di ira, un giorno di calamità e angoscia, un giorno di distruzione e desolazione, un giorno di tenebre e caligine, un giorno di nuvole e fitta oscurità,

A day of wrath that day, A day of adversity and distress, A day of waste and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of cloud and thick darkness.

16 u n giorno di squillo di tromba e di allarme contro le città fortificate e contro le alte torri.

A day of trumpet and shouting against the fenced cities, And against the high corners.

17 F arò venire l'avversità sugli uomini ed essi cammineranno come ciechi, perché hanno peccato contro l'Eterno; il loro sangue sarà sparso come polvere e la loro carne come escrementi.

And I have sent distress to men, And they have walked as the blind, For against Jehovah they have sinned, And poured out is their blood as dust, And their flesh as dung.

18 N é il loro argento né il loro oro li potrà liberare nel giorno dell'ira dell'Eterno; anzi tutto il paese sarà divorato dal fuoco della sua gelosia, perché egli compirà certamente una completa distruzione di tutti gli abitanti del paese.

Even their silver, even their gold, Is not able to deliver them in a day of the wrath of Jehovah, And in the fire of His jealousy consumed is the whole land, For only a hastened end doth He make Of all the inhabitants of the land!
