1 S aul aveva trent'anni quando cominciò a regnare; e dopo aver regnato due anni sopra Israele.

A son of a year Saul in his reigning, yea, two years he hath reigned over Israel,

2 S aul si scelse tremila uomini d'Israele: duemila stavano con lui a Mikmash e nella regione montuosa di Bethel, e mille con Gionathan, a Ghibeah di Beniamino; rimandò invece il resto del popolo, ognuno alla sua tenda.

and Saul chooseth for himself three thousand out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and a thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the remnant of the people he hath sent each to his tents.

3 G ionathan sconfisse la guarnigione dei Filistei che stava a Gheba, e i Filistei lo vennero a sapere. Allora Saul fece suonare la tromba per tutto il paese, dicendo: «Lo sappiano gli Ebrei!».

And Jonathan smiteth the garrison of the Philistines which in Geba, and the Philistines hear, and Saul hath blown with a trumpet through all the land, saying, `Let the Hebrews hear.'

4 E tutto Israele sentì dire: «Saul ha sconfitto la guarnigione dei Filistei e Israele è venuto in odio ai Filistei». Così il popolo fu convocato a Ghilgal per seguire Saul.

And all Israel have heard, saying, `Saul hath smitten the garrison of the Philistines,' and also, `Israel hath been abhorred by the Philistines;' and the people are called after Saul to Gilgal.

5 A nche i Filistei si radunarono per combattere contro Israele, con trentamila carri, seimila cavalieri e gente numerosa come la sabbia che è sul lido del mare. Salirono dunque e si accamparono a Mikmash, a est di Beth-Aven.

And the Philistines have been gathered to fight with Israel; thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a people as the sand which on the sea-shore for multitude; and they come up and encamp in Michmash, east of Beth-Aven.

6 Q uando gli Israeliti si accorsero di essere in pericolo, (perché il popolo era messo alle strette), si nascosero nelle caverne, nelle macchie, tra le rocce, nelle buche e nelle cisterne.

And the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people hath been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

7 A lcuni Ebrei passarono il Giordano per andare nel paese di Gad e di Galaad. Quanto a Saul, egli era ancora a Ghilgal e tutto il popolo lo seguiva, tremando.

And Hebrews have passed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; and Saul yet in Gilgal, and all the people have trembled after him.

8 E gli aspettò sette giorni secondo il tempo fissato da Samuele; ma Samuele non giungeva a Ghilgal e il popolo cominciava a disperdersi lontano da lui.

And he waiteth seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel hath not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.

9 A llora Saul disse: «Portatemi l'olocausto e i sacrifici di ringraziamento». Quindi offerse l'olocausto.

And Saul saith, `Bring nigh unto me the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings;' and he causeth the burnt-offering to ascend.

10 A veva appena finito di offrire l'olocausto, quando arrivò Samuele; e Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo.

And it cometh to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that lo, Samuel hath come, and Saul goeth out to meet him, to bless him;

11 M a Samuele gli disse: «Che cosa hai fatto?». Saul rispose: «Quando ho visto che il popolo si disperdeva lontano da me, che tu non eri giunto nel giorno stabilito e che i Filistei si radunavano a Mikmash, mi son detto:

and Samuel saith, `What hast thou done?' And Saul saith, `Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and thou hadst not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,

12 " Ora i Filistei mi piomberanno addosso a Ghilgal e io non ho ancora supplicato l'Eterno". Perciò mi sono fatto forza e ho offerto l'olocausto».

and I say, Now do the Philistines come down unto me to Gilgal, and the face of Jehovah I have not appeased; and I force myself, and cause the burnt-offering to ascend.'

13 A llora Samuele disse a Saul: «Tu hai agito stoltamente; non hai osservato il comandamento che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti aveva prescritto. L'Eterno infatti avrebbe stabilito il tuo regno su Israele in perpetuo.

And Samuel saith unto Saul, `Thou hast been foolish; thou hast not kept the command of Jehovah thy God, which He commanded thee, for now had Jehovah established thy kingdom over Israel unto the age;

14 O ra invece il tuo regno non durerà. L'Eterno si è cercato un uomo secondo il suo cuore, e l'Eterno lo ha stabilito principe del suo popolo, perché tu non hai osservato ciò che l'Eterno ti aveva comandato».

and, now, thy kingdom doth not stand, Jehovah hath sought for Himself a man according to His own heart, and Jehovah chargeth him for leader over His people, for thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.'

15 P oi Samuele si levò e salì da Ghilgal a Ghibeah di Beniamino, e Saul passò in rassegna il popolo che si trovava con lui erano circa seicento uomini.

And Samuel riseth, and goeth up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspecteth the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,

16 O r Saul, Gionathan suo figlio e la gente rimasta con loro rimasero a Ghibeah di Beniamino, mentre i Filistei erano accampati a Mikmash.

and Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who are found with them, are abiding in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines have encamped in Michmash.

17 P oi dall'accampamento dei Filistei uscirono dei razziatori divisi in tre schiere: una schiera si diresse sulla via di Ofrah, verso il paese di Shual;

And the destroyer goeth out from the camp of the Philistines -- three detachments; the one detachment turneth unto the way of Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;

18 u n'altra schiera si diresse sulla via di Beth-Horon; la terza schiera si diresse sulla via della frontiera che domina la valle di Tseboim, verso il deserto.

and the one detachment turneth the way of Beth-Horon, and the one detachment turneth the way of the border which is looking on the valley of the Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

19 O r in tutto il paese d'Israele non si trovava alcun fabbro, perché i Filistei dicevano: «Gli Ebrei non fabbrichino spade o lance».

And an artificer is not found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, `Lest the Hebrews make sword or spear;'

20 C osì tutti gl'Israeliti scendevano dai Filistei per affilare chi il suo vomero, chi la sua zappa, chi la sua scure, chi la sua vanga.

and all Israel go down to the Philistines, to sharpen each his ploughshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;

21 I l prezzo per l'affilatura era di un pim per le vanghe, per le zappe, per i tridenti, per le scuri e per aggiustare i pungoli.

and there hath been the file for mattocks, and for coulters, and for three-pronged rakes, and for the axes, and to set up the goads.

22 C osì, nel giorno della battaglia, non si trovava né spada né lancia in mano a tutta la gente che era con Saul e con Gionathan; ne avevano solamente Saul e Gionathan suo figlio.

And it hath been, in the day of battle, that there hath not been found sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who with Saul and with Jonathan -- and there is found to Saul and to Jonathan his son.

23 L a guarnigione dei Filistei uscì quindi verso il passo di Mikmash.

And the station of the Philistines goeth out unto the passage of Michmash.
