1 S aul aveva trent’anni quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò quarantadue anni sopra Israele.

A son of a year Saul in his reigning, yea, two years he hath reigned over Israel,

2 S aul si scelse tremila uomini d’Israele: duemila stavano con lui a Micmas e sul monte di Betel e mille con Gionatan a Ghibea di Beniamino; rimandò invece il resto del popolo ognuno alla sua tenda.

and Saul chooseth for himself three thousand out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and a thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the remnant of the people he hath sent each to his tents.

3 G ionatan batté la guarnigione dei Filistei che stava a Gheba; e i Filistei lo seppero. Allora Saul suonò la tromba per tutto il paese e disse: «Lo sappiano gli Ebrei!»

And Jonathan smiteth the garrison of the Philistines which in Geba, and the Philistines hear, and Saul hath blown with a trumpet through all the land, saying, `Let the Hebrews hear.'

4 E tutto Israele sentì dire: «Saul ha battuto la guarnigione dei Filistei e Israele si è reso odioso ai Filistei». Così il popolo fu convocato a Ghilgal per seguire Saul.

And all Israel have heard, saying, `Saul hath smitten the garrison of the Philistines,' and also, `Israel hath been abhorred by the Philistines;' and the people are called after Saul to Gilgal.

5 I Filistei si radunarono per combattere contro Israele; avevano trentamila carri, seimila cavalieri e gente numerosa come la sabbia che è sulla riva del mare. Salirono dunque e si accamparono a Micmas, a oriente di Bet-Aven.

And the Philistines have been gathered to fight with Israel; thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a people as the sand which on the sea-shore for multitude; and they come up and encamp in Michmash, east of Beth-Aven.

6 G li Israeliti, vedendosi ridotti a mal partito perché il popolo era messo alle strette, si nascosero nelle caverne, nelle macchie, tra le rocce, nelle buche e nelle cisterne.

And the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people hath been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

7 C i furono degli Ebrei che passarono il Giordano per andare nel paese di Gad e di Galaad. Quanto a Saul, egli era ancora a Ghilgal, e tutto il popolo che lo seguiva tremava.

And Hebrews have passed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; and Saul yet in Gilgal, and all the people have trembled after him.

8 E gli aspettò sette giorni, secondo il termine fissato da Samuele; ma Samuele non giungeva a Ghilgal e il popolo cominciò a disperdersi e ad abbandonarlo.

And he waiteth seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel hath not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.

9 A llora Saul disse: «Portatemi l’olocausto e i sacrifici di riconoscenza»; e offrì l’olocausto.

And Saul saith, `Bring nigh unto me the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings;' and he causeth the burnt-offering to ascend.

10 A veva appena finito di offrire l’olocausto, che arrivò Samuele; Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo.

And it cometh to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that lo, Samuel hath come, and Saul goeth out to meet him, to bless him;

11 M a Samuele gli disse: «Che hai fatto?» Saul rispose: «Siccome vedevo che il popolo si disperdeva e mi abbandonava, che tu non giungevi nel giorno stabilito e che i Filistei erano radunati a Micmas, mi sono detto:

and Samuel saith, `What hast thou done?' And Saul saith, `Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and thou hadst not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,

12 “ Ora i Filistei mi piomberanno addosso a Ghilgal e io non ho ancora implorato il Signore!” Così mi sono fatto forza e ho offerto l’olocausto».

and I say, Now do the Philistines come down unto me to Gilgal, and the face of Jehovah I have not appeased; and I force myself, and cause the burnt-offering to ascend.'

13 A llora Samuele disse a Saul: «Tu hai agito stoltamente; non hai osservato il comandamento che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti aveva dato. Il Signore avrebbe stabilito il tuo regno sopra Israele per sempre.

And Samuel saith unto Saul, `Thou hast been foolish; thou hast not kept the command of Jehovah thy God, which He commanded thee, for now had Jehovah established thy kingdom over Israel unto the age;

14 O ra invece il tuo regno non durerà. Il Signore si è cercato un uomo secondo il suo cuore, e il Signore l’ha destinato a essere principe del suo popolo, poiché tu non hai osservato quello che il Signore t’aveva ordinato».

and, now, thy kingdom doth not stand, Jehovah hath sought for Himself a man according to His own heart, and Jehovah chargeth him for leader over His people, for thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.'

15 P oi Samuele partì da Ghilgal e andò a Ghibea di Beniamino, e Saul passò in rivista il popolo che si trovava con lui; erano circa seicento uomini.

And Samuel riseth, and goeth up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspecteth the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,

16 O ra Saul, Gionatan suo figlio e la gente che si trovava con essi occupavano Ghibea di Beniamino, mentre i Filistei erano accampati a Micmas.

and Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who are found with them, are abiding in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines have encamped in Michmash.

17 D all’accampamento dei Filistei uscirono dei guastatori divisi in tre schiere: una prese la via di Ofra, verso il paese di Sual;

And the destroyer goeth out from the camp of the Philistines -- three detachments; the one detachment turneth unto the way of Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;

18 l ’altra prese la via di Bet-Oron; la terza prese la via della frontiera che guarda la valle di Seboim, verso il deserto.

and the one detachment turneth the way of Beth-Horon, and the one detachment turneth the way of the border which is looking on the valley of the Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

19 A llora in tutto il paese d’Israele non si trovava un fabbro; poiché i Filistei avevano detto: «Impediamo agli Ebrei di fabbricarsi spade o lance».

And an artificer is not found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, `Lest the Hebrews make sword or spear;'

20 E tutti gli Israeliti scendevano dai Filistei per farsi affilare chi il suo vomere, chi la sua zappa, chi la sua scure, chi la sua vanga.

and all Israel go down to the Philistines, to sharpen each his ploughshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;

21 I l prezzo dell’arrotatura era di un pim per le vanghe, per le zappe, per i tridenti, per le scuri e per aggiustare i pungoli.

and there hath been the file for mattocks, and for coulters, and for three-pronged rakes, and for the axes, and to set up the goads.

22 C osì nel giorno della battaglia avvenne che in mano a tutta la gente che era con Saul e con Gionatan non si trovava né una spada né una lancia; se ne trovava soltanto in mano di Saul e di Gionatan suo figlio.

And it hath been, in the day of battle, that there hath not been found sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who with Saul and with Jonathan -- and there is found to Saul and to Jonathan his son.

23 I ntanto una guarnigione dei Filistei uscì a occupare il passo di Micmas.

And the station of the Philistines goeth out unto the passage of Michmash.
