5 S i prepara la mensa, vegliano le guardie, si mangia, si beve. In piedi, o capi! Ungete lo scudo!

Arrange the table, watch in the watch-tower, Eat, drink, rise, ye heads, anoint the shield,

6 P oiché così mi ha parlato il Signore: «Va’, metti una sentinella; che essa annunci quanto vedrà!

For thus said the Lord unto me: `Go, station the watchman, That which he seeth let him declare.'

7 V edrà carri, cavalieri a due a due, truppa a dorso d’asini, truppa a dorso di cammelli; osservi, osservi attentamente».

And he hath seen a chariot -- a couple of horsemen, The rider of an ass, the rider of a camel, And he hath given attention -- He hath increased attention!

8 P oi la vedetta gridò: «Signore, di giorno io sto sempre sulla torre di vedetta e tutte le notti sono in piedi nel mio posto di guardia.

And he crieth -- a lion, `On a watch-tower my lord, I am standing continually by day, And on my ward I am stationed whole nights.

9 E d ecco venire un carro con un uomo e due cavalli. Quello gridava: “Caduta, caduta è Babilonia! E tutte le immagini scolpite dei suoi dèi sono frantumate al suolo”».

And lo, this, the chariot of a man is coming, A couple of horsemen.' And he answereth and saith: `Fallen, fallen hath Babylon, And all the graven images of her gods He hath broken to the earth.

10 P opolo mio, che sei trebbiato come il grano della mia aia, ciò che ho udito dal Signore degli eserciti, dal Dio d’Israele, io te l’ho annunciato! Profezia contro Edom e l’Arabia

O my threshing, and the son of my floor, That which I heard from Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, I have declared to you!'

11 O racolo contro Duma. Mi si grida da Seir: «Sentinella, a che punto è la notte? Sentinella, a che punto è la notte?»

The burden of Dumah. Unto me is calling from Seir `Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?'

12 L a sentinella risponde: «Viene la mattina, e viene anche la notte. Se volete interrogare, interrogate pure; tornate un’altra volta».

The watchman hath said, `Come hath morning, and also night, If ye inquire, inquire ye, turn back, come.'

13 O racolo contro l’Arabia. Passerete la notte nelle foreste, in Arabia, o carovane dei Dedaniti!

The burden on Arabia. In a forest in Arabia ye lodge, O travellers of Dedanim.

14 V enite incontro all’assetato con acqua, o abitanti del paese di Tema; portate pane ai fuggiaschi.

To meet the thirsty brought water have Inhabitants of the land of Tema, With his bread they came before a fugitive.

15 P oiché essi fuggono davanti alle spade, davanti alla spada sguainata, davanti all’arco teso, davanti al furore della battaglia.

For from the face of destructions they fled, From the face of a stretched-out sword, And from the face of a trodden bow, And from the face of the grievousness of battle.

16 P oiché così mi ha parlato il Signore: «Fra un anno, contato come quello di un operaio, tutta la gloria di Chedar sarà svanita;

For thus said the Lord unto me: `Within a year, as years of a hireling, Consumed hath been all the honour of Kedar.

17 c iò che resterà del numero dei valorosi arcieri di Chedar sarà poca cosa»; poiché il Signore, Dio d’Israele, l’ha detto.

And the remnant of the number of bow-men, The mighty of the sons of Kedar are few, For Jehovah, God of Israel, hath spoken!'
