1 G uai a quelli che vivono tranquilli a Sion e fiduciosi sul monte di Samaria, ai notabili della prima fra le nazioni, dietro ai quali va la casa d’Israele!

Wo those secure in Zion, And those confident in the mount of Samaria, The marked of the chief of the nations, And come to them have the house of Israel.

2 P assate a Calne e guardate, e di là andate fino a Camat la grande, poi scendete a Gat dei Filistei: quelle città stanno forse meglio di questi regni? o il loro territorio è forse più vasto del vostro?

Pass ye over Calneh and see, And go thence Hamath the great, And go down Gath of the Philistines, Are better than these kingdoms? Greater their border than your border?

3 V oi volete allontanare il giorno del male, ma fate avvicinare il regno della violenza.

4 S i stendono su letti d’avorio, si sdraiano sui loro divani, mangiano gli agnelli del gregge e i vitelli presi dalla stalla.

Who are lying down on beds of ivory, And are spread out on their couches, And are eating lambs from the flock, And calves from the midst of the stall,

5 I mprovvisano al suono della cetra, si inventano strumenti musicali come Davide;

Who are taking part according to the psaltery, Like David they invented for themselves instruments of music;

6 b evono il vino in ampie coppe e si ungono con gli oli più pregiati, ma non si addolorano per la rovina di Giuseppe.

Who are drinking with bowls of wine, And chief perfumes anoint, And have not been pained for the breach of Joseph.

7 P erciò ora andranno in esilio alla testa dei deportati e cesseranno le feste di questa combriccola.

Therefore now they remove at the head of the captives, And turned aside is the mourning-feast of stretched-out ones.

8 I l Signore, Dio, l’ha giurato per se stesso, dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti: «Io detesto l’orgoglio di Giacobbe, odio i suoi palazzi e darò in mano al nemico la città con tutto ciò che contiene».

9 S e restano dieci uomini in una casa, moriranno.

And if there are left ten persons in one house, It hath come to pass -- that they have died.

10 U n parente verrà con il becchino a prendere il morto e a portarne via di casa le ossa; e dirà a colui che è in fondo alla casa: «Ce n’è altri con te?» L’altro risponderà: «No». E il primo dirà: «Zitto! Non è il momento di nominare il nome del Signore ».

11 P oiché, ecco, il Signore comanda di far cadere a pezzi la casa grande e ridurre la piccola in frantumi.

For lo, Jehovah is commanding, And He hath smitten the great house breaches, And the little house clefts.

12 C orrono forse i cavalli sulle rocce? Si ara forse su esse con i buoi? Eppure voi cambiate il diritto in veleno e il frutto della giustizia in assenzio;

Do horses run on a rock? Doth one plough with oxen? For ye have turned to gall judgment, And the fruit of righteousness to wormwood.

13 v i rallegrate di cose da nulla e dite: «Non è forse con la nostra forza che abbiamo acquistato potenza?»

O ye who are rejoicing at nothing, Who are saying, `Have we not by our strength taken to ourselves horns?'

14 P oiché, ecco, o casa d’Israele, dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti: «Io faccio sorgere contro di voi una nazione, che vi opprimerà dall’ingresso di Camat fino al torrente dell’Arabà».

Surely, lo, I am raising against you a nation, O house of Israel, An affirmation of Jehovah, God of Hosts, And they have oppressed you from the coming in to Hamath, Unto the stream of the desert.
