1 N el secondo anno del suo regno, Nabucodonosor ebbe dei sogni che turbarono così profondamente il suo spirito da impedirgli di dormire.

And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, dreamed hath Nebuchadnezzar dreams, and his spirit doth move itself, and his sleep hath been against him;

2 I l re fece chiamare i magi, gli incantatori, gli indovini e i Caldei perché gli spiegassero i suoi sogni. Essi vennero e si presentarono al re.

and the king saith to call for scribes, and for enchanters, and for sorcerers, and for Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dreams. And they come in and stand before the king;

3 E gli disse loro: «Ho fatto un sogno e il mio spirito è turbato, perché vorrei comprendere il suo significato».

and the king saith to them, `A dream I have dreamed, and moved is my spirit to know the dream.'

4 A llora i Caldei risposero al re in aramaico: «O re, possa tu vivere per sempre! Racconta il sogno ai tuoi servi e noi ne daremo l’interpretazione».

And the Chaldeans speak to the king Aramaean, `O king, to the ages live, tell the dream to thy servants, and the interpretation we do shew.'

5 I l re replicò e disse ai Caldei: «Questa è la mia decisione: se voi non mi fate conoscere il sogno e la sua interpretazione, sarete fatti a pezzi e le vostre case saranno ridotte in tanti letamai.

The king hath answered and said to the Chaldeans, `The thing from me is gone; if ye do not cause me to know the dream and its interpretation, pieces ye are made, and your houses are made dunghills;

6 S e invece mi dite il sogno e la sua interpretazione, riceverete da me doni, ricompense e grandi onori; ditemi dunque il sogno e la sua interpretazione».

and if the dream and its interpretation ye do shew, gifts, and fee, and great glory ye receive from before me, therefore the dream and its interpretation shew ye me.'

7 E ssi risposero una seconda volta e dissero: «Esponga il re il sogno ai suoi servi e noi ne daremo l’interpretazione».

They have answered a second time, and are saying, `Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and the interpretation we do shew.

8 I l re replicò e disse: «Io mi accorgo che voi volete guadagnare tempo, perché avete sentito la decisione che ho preso;

The king hath answered and said, `Of a truth I know that time ye are gaining, because that ye have seen that the thing is gone from me,

9 s e dunque non mi fate conoscere il sogno, la vostra sorte sarà una sola. Voi vi siete messi d’accordo per darmi delle risposte bugiarde e perverse, aspettando che cambino i tempi. Ditemi dunque il sogno e io saprò che siete in grado di darmene l’interpretazione».

that, if the dream ye do not cause me to know -- one is your sentence, seeing a word lying and corrupt ye have prepared to speak before me, till that the time is changed, therefore the dream tell ye to me, then do I know that its interpretation ye do shew me.'

10 I Caldei risposero al re e dissero: «Non c’è uomo sulla terra che possa dire ciò che il re domanda; così non c’è mai stato re, per grande e potente che fosse, che abbia domandato una cosa simile a un mago, o incantatore, o Caldeo.

The Chaldeans have answered before the king, and are saying, `There is not a man on the earth who is able to shew the king's matter; therefore, no king, chief, and ruler, hath asked such a thing as this of any scribe, and enchanter, and Chaldean;

11 Q uello che il re chiede è difficile e non c’è nessuno che possa dirlo al re, se non gli dèi, la cui dimora non è fra i mortali».

and the thing that the king is asking precious, and others are there not that do shew it before the king, save the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.'

12 A llora il re si adirò, si infuriò terribilmente e ordinò che tutti i saggi di Babilonia fossero giustiziati.

Therefore the king hath been angry and very wroth, and hath said to destroy all the wise men of Babylon;

13 I l decreto fu promulgato e i saggi stavano per essere uccisi, e si cercavano Daniele e i suoi compagni per uccidere anche loro.

And the sentence hath gone forth, and the wise men are being slain, and they have sought Daniel and his companions to be slain.

14 A llora Daniele si rivolse con prudenza e con tatto ad Arioc, capo delle guardie del re, che era uscito per uccidere i saggi di Babilonia.

Then Daniel hath replied counsel and discretion to Arioch chief of the executioners of the king, who hath gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon.

15 P rese la parola e disse ad Arioc, ufficiale del re: «Perché questo decreto così perentorio da parte del re?» Allora Arioc spiegò il motivo a Daniele.

He hath answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, `Wherefore the sentence so urgent from before the king?' Then Arioch hath made the thing known to Daniel,

16 D aniele si presentò al re e gli chiese di dargli tempo; egli avrebbe fatto conoscere al re l’interpretazione del sogno.

and Daniel hath gone up, and sought of the king that he would give him time to shew the interpretation to the king.

17 A llora Daniele andò a casa sua e informò Anania, Misael e Azaria, suoi compagni,

Then Daniel to his house hath gone, and to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, he hath made the thing known,

18 e sortandoli a implorare la misericordia del Dio del cielo a proposito di questo segreto, affinché Daniele e i suoi compagni non fossero messi a morte con tutti gli altri saggi di Babilonia.

and to seek mercies from before the God of the heavens concerning this secret, that they destroy not Daniel and his companions with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19 A llora il segreto fu rivelato a Daniele in una visione notturna ed egli benedisse il Dio del cielo, dicendo:

Then to Daniel, in a vision of the night, the secret hath been revealed. Then hath Daniel blessed the God of the heavens.

20 « Sia benedetto eternamente il nome di Dio, perché a lui appartengono la saggezza e la forza.

Daniel hath answered and said, `Let the name of God be blessed from age even unto age, for wisdom and might -- for they are His.

21 E gli alterna i tempi e le stagioni; depone i re e li innalza, dà la saggezza ai saggi e il sapere agli intelligenti.

And He is changing times and seasons, He is causing kings to pass away, and He is raising up kings; He is giving wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those possessing understanding.

22 E gli svela le cose profonde e nascoste, conosce ciò che è nelle tenebre e la luce abita con lui.

He is revealing deep and hidden things; He hath known what in darkness, and light with Him hath dwelt.

23 O Dio dei miei padri, io ti lodo e ti ringrazio, perché mi hai dato saggezza e forza, e mi hai fatto conoscere quello che ti abbiamo domandato, rivelandoci il segreto che il re vuol conoscere».

Thee, O God of my fathers, I am thanking and praising, for wisdom and might Thou hast given to me; and now, Thou hast caused me to know that which we have sought from Thee, for the king's matter Thou hast caused us to know.'

24 D aniele si recò quindi da Arioc, a cui il re aveva affidato l’incarico di far morire i saggi di Babilonia, e gli disse: «Non far morire i saggi di Babilonia! Conducimi dal re e io gli darò l’interpretazione».

Therefore Daniel hath gone up unto Arioch, whom the king hath appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he hath gone, and thus hath said to him, `The wise men of Babylon thou dost not destroy, bring me up before the king, and the interpretation to the king I do shew.'

25 A llora Arioc si affrettò a introdurre Daniele davanti al re e gli disse: «Ho trovato un uomo tra i Giudei deportati che darà al re l’interpretazione».

Then Arioch in haste hath brought up Daniel before the king, and thus hath said to him -- `I have found a man of the sons of the Removed of Judah, who the interpretation to the king doth make known.'

26 I l re disse a Daniele, detto Baltazzar: «Sei capace di farmi conoscere il sogno che ho fatto e la sua interpretazione?»

The king hath answered and said to Daniel, whose name Belteshazzar, `Art thou able to cause me to know the dream that I have seen, and its interpretation?'

27 D aniele rispose al re: «Il segreto che il re domanda, né saggi, né incantatori, né magi, né astrologi possono svelarlo al re;

Daniel hath answered before the king and said, `The secret that the king is asking, the wise men, the enchanters, the scribes, the soothsayers, are not able to shew to the king;

28 m a c’è un Dio nel cielo che rivela i misteri, ed egli ha fatto conoscere al re Nabucodonosor quello che deve avvenire negli ultimi giorni. Ecco dunque quali erano il tuo sogno e le visioni della tua mente quando eri a letto:

but there is a God in the heavens, a revealer of secrets, and He hath made known to king Nebuchadnezzar that which to be in the latter end of the days. `Thy dream and the visions of thy head on thy bed are these:

29 i tuoi pensieri, o re, quando eri a letto, si riferivano a quello che deve avvenire da ora in avanti; colui che rivela i misteri ti ha fatto conoscere quello che avverrà.

Thou, O king, thy thoughts on thy bed have come up that which to be after this, and the Revealer of secrets hath caused thee to know that which to be.

30 Q uanto a me, questo segreto mi è stato rivelato non perché la mia saggezza sia superiore a quella di tutti gli altri viventi, ma perché io possa dare l’interpretazione al re, e tu possa conoscere i pensieri del tuo cuore.

As to me -- not for wisdom that is in me above any living hath this secret been revealed to me; but for the intent that the interpretation to the king they make known, and the thoughts of thy heart thou dost know.

31 T u, o re, guardavi, ed ecco una grande statua; questa statua, immensa e d’uno splendore straordinario, si ergeva davanti a te, e il suo aspetto era terribile.

`Thou, O king, wast looking, and lo, a certain great image. This image mighty, and its brightness excellent; it is standing over-against thee, and its appearance terrible.

32 L a testa di questa statua era d’oro puro; il suo petto e le sue braccia erano d’argento; il suo ventre e le sue cosce, di bronzo;

This image! its head of good gold, its breasts and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass;

33 l e sue gambe, di ferro; i suoi piedi, in parte di ferro e in parte d’argilla.

its legs of iron, its feet, part of them of iron, and part of them of clay.

34 M entre guardavi, una pietra si staccò, ma non spinta da una mano, e colpì i piedi di ferro e d’argilla della statua e li frantumò.

Thou wast looking till that a stone hath been cut out without hands, and it hath smitten the image on its feet, that of iron and of clay, and it hath broken them small;

35 A llora si frantumarono anche il ferro, l’argilla, il bronzo, l’argento e l’oro, e divennero come la pula sulle aie d’estate. Il vento li portò via e non se ne trovò più traccia; ma la pietra che aveva colpito la statua diventò un gran monte che riempì tutta la terra.

then broken small together have been the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, and they have been as chaff from the summer threshing-floor, and carried them away hath the wind, and no place hath been found for them: and the stone that smote the image hath become a great mountain, and hath filled all the land.

36 Q uesto è il sogno; ora ne daremo l’interpretazione al re.

This the dream, and its interpretation we do tell before the king.

37 T u, o re, sei il re dei re, a cui il Dio del cielo ha dato il regno, la potenza, la forza e la gloria;

`Thou, O king, art a king of kings, for the God of the heavens a kingdom, strength, and might, and glory, hath given to thee;

38 e ha messo nelle tue mani tutti i luoghi in cui abitano gli uomini, le bestie della campagna e gli uccelli del cielo, e ti ha fatto dominare sopra tutti loro: la testa d’oro sei tu.

and whithersoever sons of men are dwelling, the beast of the field, and the fowl of the heavens, He hath given into thy hand, and hath caused thee to rule over them all; thou this head of gold.

39 D opo di te sorgerà un altro regno, inferiore al tuo; poi un terzo regno, di bronzo, che dominerà sulla terra;

And after thee doth rise up another kingdom lower than those, and another third kingdom of brass, that doth rule overall the earth.

40 p oi vi sarà un quarto regno, forte come il ferro; poiché, come il ferro spezza e abbatte ogni cosa, così, pari al ferro che tutto frantuma, esso spezzerà ogni cosa.

And the fourth kingdom is strong as iron, because that iron is breaking small, and making feeble, all, even as iron that is breaking all these, it beateth small and breaketh.

41 C ome i piedi e le dita, in parte d’argilla da vasaio e in parte di ferro, che tu hai visto, così sarà diviso quel regno; ma vi sarà in esso qualcosa della consistenza del ferro, poiché tu hai visto il ferro mescolato con la fragile argilla.

As to that which thou hast seen: the feet and toes, part of them potter's clay, and part of them iron, the kingdom is divided: and some of the standing of the iron to be in it, because that thou hast seen the iron mixed with miry clay.

42 C ome le dita dei piedi erano in parte di ferro e in parte d’argilla, così quel regno sarà in parte forte e in parte fragile.

As to the toes of the feet, part of them iron, and part of them clay: some part of the kingdom is strong, and some part of it is brittle.

43 H ai visto il ferro mescolato con la molle argilla, perché quelli si mescoleranno mediante matrimonio, ma non si uniranno l’uno all’altro, così come il ferro non si amalgama con l’argilla.

Because thou hast seen iron mixed with miry clay, they are mixing themselves with the seed of men: and they are not adhering one with another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

44 A l tempo di questi re, il Dio del cielo farà sorgere un regno, che non sarà mai distrutto e che non cadrà sotto il dominio d’un altro popolo. Spezzerà e annienterà tutti quei regni, ma esso durerà per sempre,

`And in the days of these kings raise up doth the God of the heavens a kingdom that is not destroyed -- to the age, and its kingdom to another people is not left: it beateth small and endeth all these kingdoms, and it standeth to the age.

45 p roprio come la pietra che hai visto staccarsi dal monte, senza intervento umano, e spezzare il ferro, il bronzo, l’argilla, l’argento e l’oro. Il gran Dio ha fatto conoscere al re quello che deve avvenire d’ora in poi. Il sogno è vero, e sicura è la sua interpretazione».

Because that thou hast seen that out of the mountain cut hath been a stone without hands, and it hath beaten small the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king that which to be after this; and the dream true, and its interpretation stedfast.

46 A llora il re Nabucodonosor, abbassando la sua faccia fino a terra, si inchinò davanti a Daniele e ordinò che gli fossero portati offerte e profumi.

Then hath king Nebuchadnezzar fallen on his face, and to Daniel he hath done obeisance, and present, and sweet things, he hath said to pour out to him.

47 P oi il re parlò a Daniele e disse: «In verità il vostro Dio è il Dio degli dèi, il Signore dei re e il rivelatore dei segreti, poiché tu hai potuto svelare questo mistero».

The king hath answered Daniel and said, `Of a truth that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since thou hast been able to reveal this secret.'

48 A llora il re innalzò Daniele in dignità, lo colmò di numerosi e ricchi doni, gli diede il comando di tutta la provincia di Babilonia e lo fece capo supremo di tutti i saggi di Babilonia.

Then the king hath made Daniel great, and many great gifts he hath given to him, and hath caused him to rule over all the province of Babylon, and chief of the perfects over all the wise men of Babylon.

49 D aniele chiese al re di affidare a Sadrac, Mesac e Abed-Nego l’amministrazione della provincia di Babilonia; ma Daniele rimase alla corte del re.

And Daniel hath sought from the king, and he hath appointed over the work of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and Daniel in the gate of the king.
