To the Overseer. -- `Concerning the Lily of Testimony,' a secret treasure of David, to teach, in his striving with Aram-Naharaim, and with Aram-Zobah, and Joab turneth back and smiteth Edom in the valley of Salt -- twelve thousand. O God, Thou hadst cast us off, Thou hadst broken us -- hadst been angry! -- Thou dost turn back to us.

2 H ai fatto tremare la terra, l’hai spaccata; risana le sue fratture, perché sta per crollare.

Thou hast caused the land to tremble, Thou hast broken it, Heal its breaches, for it hath moved.

3 H ai fatto vedere al tuo popolo cose spiacevoli; ci hai dato da bere un vino che stordisce.

Thou hast shewn Thy people a hard thing, Thou hast caused us to drink wine of trembling.

4 M a ora, tu hai dato a quelli che ti temono una bandiera, perché si alzino in favore della verità.

Thou hast given to those fearing thee an ensign. To be lifted up as an ensign Because of truth. Selah.

5 S alvaci con la tua destra e rispondici, perché quelli che ami siano liberati.

That Thy beloved ones may be drawn out, Save Thy right hand, and answer us.

6 D io ha parlato dal suo santuario: «Io trionferò, spartirò Sichem e misurerò la valle di Succot.

God hath spoken in His holiness: I exult -- I apportion Shechem, And the valley of Succoth I measure,

7 M io è Galaad, mio è Manasse, Efraim è l’elmo del mio capo, Giuda è il mio scettro.

Mine Gilead, and mine Manasseh, And Ephraim the strength of my head, Judah my lawgiver,

8 M oab è il catino in cui mi lavo; sopra Edom getterò il mio sandalo; o Filistia, fammi acclamazioni!»

Moab my pot for washing, over Edom I cast my shoe, Shout, concerning me, O Philistia.

9 C hi mi condurrà nella città forte? Chi mi condurrà fino a Edom?

Who doth bring me a city of bulwarks? Who hath led me unto Edom?

10 N on sarai forse tu, o Dio, che ci hai respinti e non esci più, o Dio, con i nostri eserciti?

Is it not Thou, O God? hast Thou cast us off? And dost Thou not go forth, O God, with our hosts!

11 D acci aiuto per superare le difficoltà, poiché vano è il soccorso dell’uomo.

Give to us help from adversity, And vain the deliverance of man.

12 C on Dio noi faremo prodigi, egli schiaccerà i nostri nemici.

In God we do mightily, And He treadeth down our adversaries!
