1 O God, You have rejected us and cast us off, broken down, and scattered us; You have been angry—O restore us and turn Yourself to us again!

To the Overseer. -- `Concerning the Lily of Testimony,' a secret treasure of David, to teach, in his striving with Aram-Naharaim, and with Aram-Zobah, and Joab turneth back and smiteth Edom in the valley of Salt -- twelve thousand. O God, Thou hadst cast us off, Thou hadst broken us -- hadst been angry! -- Thou dost turn back to us.

2 Y ou have made the land to quake and tremble, You have rent it; repair its breaches, for it shakes and totters.

Thou hast caused the land to tremble, Thou hast broken it, Heal its breaches, for it hath moved.

3 Y ou have made Your people suffer hard things; You have given us to drink wine that makes us reel and be dazed.

Thou hast shewn Thy people a hard thing, Thou hast caused us to drink wine of trembling.

4 Y ou have set up a banner for those who fear and worshipfully revere You, a standard displayed because of the truth. Selah!

Thou hast given to those fearing thee an ensign. To be lifted up as an ensign Because of truth. Selah.

5 T hat Your beloved ones may be delivered, save with Your right hand and answer us.

That Thy beloved ones may be drawn out, Save Thy right hand, and answer us.

6 G od has spoken in His holiness: I will rejoice, I will divide and portion out Shechem and the Valley of Succoth.

God hath spoken in His holiness: I exult -- I apportion Shechem, And the valley of Succoth I measure,

7 G ilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is My helmet (the defense of My head); Judah is My scepter and My lawgiver.

Mine Gilead, and mine Manasseh, And Ephraim the strength of my head, Judah my lawgiver,

8 M oab is My washpot; upon Edom I cast My shoe in triumph; over Philistia I raise the shout of victory.

Moab my pot for washing, over Edom I cast my shoe, Shout, concerning me, O Philistia.

9 W ho will bring me into the strong city ? Who will lead me into Edom?

Who doth bring me a city of bulwarks? Who hath led me unto Edom?

10 H ave You not rejected us, O God? And will You not go forth, O God, with our armies?

Is it not Thou, O God? hast Thou cast us off? And dost Thou not go forth, O God, with our hosts!

11 O give us help against the adversary, for vain (ineffectual and to no purpose) is the help or salvation of man.

Give to us help from adversity, And vain the deliverance of man.

12 T hrough God we shall do valiantly, for He it is Who shall tread down our adversaries.

In God we do mightily, And He treadeth down our adversaries!
