1 B ut you, teach what is fitting and becoming to sound (wholesome) doctrine.
And thou -- be speaking what doth become the sound teaching;
2 U rge the older men to be temperate, venerable (serious), sensible, self-controlled, and sound in the faith, in the love, and in the steadfastness and patience.
aged men to be temperate, grave, sober, sound in the faith, in the love, in the endurance;
3 B id the older women similarly to be reverent and devout in their deportment as becomes those engaged in sacred service, not slanderers or slaves to drink. They are to give good counsel and be teachers of what is right and noble,
aged women, in like manner, in deportment as doth become sacred persons, not false accusers, to much wine not enslaved, of good things teachers,
4 S o that they will wisely train the young women to be sane and sober of mind (temperate, disciplined) and to love their husbands and their children,
that they may make the young women sober-minded, to be lovers of husbands, lovers of children,
5 T o be self-controlled, chaste, homemakers, good-natured (kindhearted), adapting and subordinating themselves to their husbands, that the word of God may not be exposed to reproach (blasphemed or discredited).
sober, pure, keepers of houses, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be evil spoken of.
6 I n a similar way, urge the younger men to be self-restrained and to behave prudently.
The younger men, in like manner, be exhorting to be sober-minded;
7 A nd show your own self in all respects to be a pattern and a model of good deeds and works, teaching what is unadulterated, showing gravity, with dignity and seriousness.
concerning all things thyself showing a pattern of good works; in the teaching uncorruptedness, gravity, incorruptibility,
8 A nd let your instruction be sound and fit and wise and wholesome, vigorous and irrefutable and above censure, so that the opponent may be put to shame, finding nothing discrediting or evil to say about us.
discourse sound, irreprehensible, that he who is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say concerning you.
9 b ond servants to be submissive to their masters, to be pleasing and give satisfaction in every way. not to talk back or contradict,
Servants -- to their own masters to be subject, in all things to be well-pleasing, not gainsaying,
10 N or to steal by taking things of small value, but to prove themselves truly loyal and entirely reliable and faithful throughout, so that in everything they may be an ornament and do credit to the teaching from and about God our Savior.
not purloining, but showing all good stedfastness, that the teaching of God our Saviour they may adorn in all things.
11 F or the grace of God (His unmerited favor and blessing) has come forward (appeared) for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind.
For the saving grace of God was manifested to all men,
12 I t has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness (irreligion) and worldly (passionate) desires, to live discreet (temperate, self-controlled), upright, devout (spiritually whole) lives in this present world,
teaching us, that denying the impiety and the worldly desires, soberly and righteously and piously we may live in the present age,
13 A waiting and looking for the blessed hope, even the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One),
waiting for the blessed hope and manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ,
14 W ho gave Himself on our behalf that He might redeem us (purchase our freedom) from all iniquity and purify for Himself a people eager and enthusiastic about beneficial deeds.
who did give himself for us, that he might ransom us from all lawlessness, and might purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works;
15 T ell these things. Urge (advise, encourage, warn) and rebuke with full authority. Let no one despise or disregard or think little of you.
these things be speaking, and exhorting, and convicting, with all charge; let no one despise thee!
