1 A nd Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain and chief executioner of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.

And Joseph hath been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners, an Egyptian man, buyeth him out of the hands of the Ishmaelites who have brought him thither.

2 B ut the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful and prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

And Jehovah is with Joseph, and he is a prosperous man, and he is in the house of his lord the Egyptian,

3 A nd his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all that he did to flourish and succeed in his hand.

and his lord seeth that Jehovah is with him, and all that he is doing Jehovah is causing to prosper in his hand,

4 S o Joseph pleased and found favor in his sight, and he served him. And made him supervisor over his house and he put all that he had in his charge.

and Joseph findeth grace in his eyes and serveth him, and he appointeth him over his house, and all that he hath he hath given into his hand.

5 F rom the time that he made him supervisor in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the Lord’s blessing was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

And it cometh to pass from the time that he hath appointed him over his house, and over all that he hath, that Jehovah blesseth the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of Jehovah is on all that he hath, in the house, and in the field;

6 A nd left all that he had in Joseph’s charge and paid no attention to anything he had except the food he ate. Now Joseph was an attractive person and fine-looking.

and he leaveth all that he hath in the hand of Joseph, and he hath not known anything that he hath, except the bread which he is eating. And Joseph is of a fair form, and of a fair appearance.

7 T hen after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said, Lie with me.

And it cometh to pass after these things, that his lord's wife lifteth up her eyes unto Joseph, and saith, `Lie with me;'

8 B ut he refused and said to his master’s wife, See here, with me in the house my master has concern about nothing; he has put all that he has in my care.

and he refuseth, and saith unto his lord's wife, `Lo, my lord hath not known what with me in the house, and all that he hath he hath given into my hand;

9 H e is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept anything from me except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God?

none is greater in this house than I, and he hath not withheld from me anything, except thee, because thou his wife; and how shall I do this great evil? -- then have I sinned against God.'

10 S he spoke to Joseph day after day, but he did not listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her.

And it cometh to pass at her speaking unto Joseph day day, that he hath not hearkened unto her, to lie near her, to be with her;

11 T hen it happened about this time that Joseph went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the men of the house were indoors.

and it cometh to pass about this day, that he goeth into the house to do his work, and there is none of the men of the house there in the house,

12 A nd she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me! But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out.

and she catcheth him by his garment, saying, `Lie with me;' and he leaveth his garment in her hand, and fleeth, and goeth without.

13 A nd when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled away,

And it cometh to pass when she seeth that he hath left his garment in her hand, and fleeth without,

14 S he called to the men of her household and said to them, Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock and insult us; he came in where I was to lie with me, and I screamed at the top of my voice.

that she calleth for the men of her house, and speaketh to them, saying, `See, he hath brought in to us a man, a Hebrew, to play with us; he hath come in unto me, to lie with me, and I call with a loud voice,

15 A nd when he heard me screaming and crying, he left his garment with me and fled and got out of the house.

and it cometh to pass, when he heareth that I have lifted up my voice and call, that he leaveth his garment near me, and fleeth, and goeth without.'

16 A nd she laid up his garment by her until his master came home.

And she placeth his garment near her, until the coming in of his lord unto his house.

17 T hen she told him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you brought among us came to me to mock and insult me.

And she speaketh unto him according to these words, saying, `The Hebrew servant whom thou hast brought unto us, hath come in unto me to play with me;

18 A nd when I screamed and cried, he left his garment with me and fled out.

and it cometh to pass, when I lift my voice and call, that he leaveth his garment near me, and fleeth without.'

19 A nd when master heard the words of his wife, saying to him, This is the way your servant treated me, his wrath was kindled.

And it cometh to pass when his lord heareth the words of his wife, which she hath spoken unto him, saying, `According to these things hath thy servant done to me,' that his anger burneth;

20 A nd Joseph’s master took him and put him in the prison, a place where the state prisoners were confined; so he was there in the prison.

and Joseph's lord taketh him, and putteth him unto the round-house, a place where the king's prisoners bound; and he is there in the round-house.

21 B ut the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy and loving-kindness and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison.

And Jehovah is with Joseph, and stretcheth out kindness unto him, and putteth his grace in the eyes of the chief of the round-house;

22 A nd the warden of the prison committed to Joseph’s care all the prisoners who were in the prison; and whatsoever was done there, he was in charge of it.

and the chief of the round-house giveth into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who in the round-house, and of all that they are doing there, he hath been doer;

23 T he prison warden paid no attention to anything that was in charge, for the Lord was with him and made whatever he did to prosper.

the chief of the round-house seeth not anything under his hand, because Jehovah with him, and that which he is doing Jehovah is causing to prosper.
