1 T ake care not to do your good deeds publicly or before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you will have no reward '> reserved for and awaiting you] with and from your Father Who is in heaven.
`Take heed your kindness not to do before men, to be seen by them, and if not -- reward ye have not from your Father who in the heavens;
2 T hus, whenever you give to the poor, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites in the synagogues and in the streets like to do, that they may be recognized and honored and praised by men. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already.
whenever, therefore, thou mayest do kindness, thou mayest not sound a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory from men; verily I say to you -- they have their reward!
3 B ut when you give to charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
`But thou, doing kindness, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth,
4 S o that your deeds of charity may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly.
that thy kindness may be in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret Himself shall reward thee manifestly.
5 A lso when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already.
`And when thou mayest pray, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites, because they love in the synagogues, and in the corners of the broad places -- standing -- to pray, that they may be seen of men; verily I say to you, that they have their reward.
6 B ut when you pray, go into your private room, and, closing the door, pray to your Father, Who is in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.
`But thou, when thou mayest pray, go into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly.
7 A nd when you pray, do not heap up phrases (multiply words, repeating the same ones over and over) as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their much speaking.
`And -- praying -- ye may not use vain repetitions like the nations, for they think that in their much speaking they shall be heard,
8 D o not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
be ye not therefore like to them, for your Father doth know those things that ye have need of before your asking him;
9 P ray, therefore, like this: Our Father Who is in heaven, hallowed (kept holy) be Your name.
thus therefore pray ye: `Our Father who in the heavens! hallowed be Thy name.
10 Y our kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
`Thy reign come: Thy will come to pass, as in heaven also on the earth.
11 G ive us this day our daily bread.
`Our appointed bread give us to-day.
12 A nd forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven ( left, remitted, and let go of the debts, and have given up resentment against) our debtors.
`And forgive us our debts, as also we forgive our debtors.
13 A nd lead (bring) us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
`And mayest Thou not lead us to temptation, but deliver us from the evil, because Thine is the reign, and the power, and the glory -- to the ages. Amen.
14 F or if you forgive people their trespasses '> reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
`For, if ye may forgive men their trespasses He also will forgive you -- your Father who in the heavens;
15 B ut if you do not forgive others their trespasses '> reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses.
but if ye may not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 A nd whenever you are fasting, do not look gloomy and sour and dreary like the hypocrites, for they put on a dismal countenance, that their fasting may be apparent to and seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full already.
`And when ye may fast, be ye not as the hypocrites, of sour countenances, for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men fasting; verily I say to you, that they have their reward.
17 B ut when you fast, perfume your head and wash your face,
`But thou, fasting, anoint thy head, and wash thy face,
18 S o that your fasting may not be noticed by men but by your Father, Who sees in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.
that thou mayest not appear to men fasting, but to thy Father who in secret, and thy Father, who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly.
19 D o not gather and heap up and store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust and worm consume and destroy, and where thieves break through and steal.
`Treasure not up to yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust disfigure, and where thieves break through and steal,
20 B ut gather and heap up and store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust nor worm consume and destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal;
but treasure up to yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth disfigure, and where thieves do not break through nor steal,
21 F or where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
for where your treasure is, there will be also your heart.
22 T he eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light.
`The lamp of the body is the eye, if, therefore, thine eye may be perfect, all thy body shall be enlightened,
23 B ut if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you '> conscience] is darkened, how dense is that darkness!
but if thine eye may be evil, all thy body shall be dark; if, therefore, the light that in thee is darkness -- the darkness, how great!
24 N o one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon ( deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).
`None is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to the one, and despise the other; ye are not able to serve God and Mammon.
25 T herefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater than food, and the body than clothing?
`Because of this I say to you, be not anxious for your life, what ye may eat, and what ye may drink, nor for your body, what ye may put on. Is not the life more than the nourishment, and the body than the clothing?
26 L ook at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?
look to the fowls of the heaven, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into storehouses, and your heavenly Father doth nourish them; are not ye much better than they?
27 A nd who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life?
`And who of you, being anxious, is able to add to his age one cubit?
28 A nd why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin.
and about clothing why are ye anxious? consider well the lilies of the field; how do they grow? they do not labour, nor do they spin;
29 Y et I tell you, even Solomon in all his magnificence (excellence, dignity, and grace) was not arrayed like one of these.
and I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these.
30 B ut if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and green and tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, will He not much more surely clothe you, O you of little faith?
`And if the herb of the field, that to-day is, and to-morrow is cast to the furnace, God doth so clothe -- not much more you, O ye of little faith?
31 T herefore do not worry and be anxious, saying, What are we going to have to eat? or, What are we going to have to drink? or, What are we going to have to wear?
therefore ye may not be anxious, saying, What may we eat? or, What may we drink? or, What may we put round?
32 F or the Gentiles (heathen) wish for and crave and diligently seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows well that you need them all.
for all these do the nations seek for, for your heavenly Father doth know that ye have need of all these;
33 B ut seek ( aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ( His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.
but seek ye first the reign of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you.
34 S o do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.
Be not therefore anxious for the morrow, for the morrow shall be anxious for its own things; sufficient for the day the evil of it.
