1 T ake care not to do your good deeds publicly or before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you will have no reward '> reserved for and awaiting you] with and from your Father Who is in heaven.

«Guardatevi dal praticare la vostra giustizia davanti agli uomini, per essere osservati da loro; altrimenti non ne avrete premio presso il Padre vostro che è nei cieli.

2 T hus, whenever you give to the poor, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites in the synagogues and in the streets like to do, that they may be recognized and honored and praised by men. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already.

Quando dunque fai l’elemosina, non far suonare la tromba davanti a te, come fanno gli ipocriti nelle sinagoghe e nelle strade, per essere onorati dagli uomini. Io vi dico in verità che questo è il premio che ne hanno.

3 B ut when you give to charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

Ma quando tu fai l’elemosina, non sappia la tua sinistra quel che fa la destra,

4 S o that your deeds of charity may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly.

affinché la tua elemosina sia fatta in segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa. Istruzioni di Gesù sulla preghiera

5 A lso when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already.

«Quando pregate, non siate come gli ipocriti; poiché essi amano pregare stando in piedi nelle sinagoghe e agli angoli delle piazze per essere visti dagli uomini. Io vi dico in verità che questo è il premio che ne hanno.

6 B ut when you pray, go into your private room, and, closing the door, pray to your Father, Who is in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.

Ma tu, quando preghi, entra nella tua cameretta e, chiusa la porta, rivolgi la preghiera al Padre tuo che è nel segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa.

7 A nd when you pray, do not heap up phrases (multiply words, repeating the same ones over and over) as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their much speaking.

Nel pregare non usate troppe parole come fanno i pagani, i quali pensano di essere esauditi per il gran numero delle loro parole.

8 D o not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Non fate dunque come loro, poiché il Padre vostro sa le cose di cui avete bisogno, prima che gliele chiediate.

9 P ray, therefore, like this: Our Father Who is in heaven, hallowed (kept holy) be Your name.

Voi dunque pregate così: “Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome;

10 Y our kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

venga il tuo regno; sia fatta la tua volontà, come in cielo, anche in terra.

11 G ive us this day our daily bread.

Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano;

12 A nd forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven ( left, remitted, and let go of the debts, and have given up resentment against) our debtors.

rimettici i nostri debiti come anche noi li abbiamo rimessi ai nostri debitori;

13 A nd lead (bring) us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

e non ci esporre alla tentazione, ma liberaci dal maligno. ”

14 F or if you forgive people their trespasses '> reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Perché se voi perdonate agli uomini le loro colpe, il Padre vostro celeste perdonerà anche a voi;

15 B ut if you do not forgive others their trespasses '> reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses.

ma se voi non perdonate agli uomini, neppure il Padre vostro perdonerà le vostre colpe. Il digiuno

16 A nd whenever you are fasting, do not look gloomy and sour and dreary like the hypocrites, for they put on a dismal countenance, that their fasting may be apparent to and seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full already.

«Quando digiunate, non abbiate un aspetto malinconico come gli ipocriti; poiché essi si sfigurano la faccia per far vedere agli uomini che digiunano. Io vi dico in verità: questo è il premio che ne hanno.

17 B ut when you fast, perfume your head and wash your face,

Ma tu, quando digiuni, ungiti il capo e lavati la faccia,

18 S o that your fasting may not be noticed by men but by your Father, Who sees in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.

affinché non appaia agli uomini che tu digiuni, ma al Padre tuo che è nel segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa. Un tesoro in cielo

19 D o not gather and heap up and store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust and worm consume and destroy, and where thieves break through and steal.

«Non fatevi tesori sulla terra, dove la tignola e la ruggine consumano, e dove i ladri scassinano e rubano;

20 B ut gather and heap up and store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust nor worm consume and destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal;

ma fatevi tesori in cielo, dove né tignola né ruggine consumano, e dove i ladri non scassinano né rubano.

21 F or where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Perché dov’è il tuo tesoro, lì sarà anche il tuo cuore.

22 T he eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light.

La lampada del corpo è l’occhio. Se dunque il tuo occhio è limpido, tutto il tuo corpo sarà illuminato;

23 B ut if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you '> conscience] is darkened, how dense is that darkness!

ma se il tuo occhio è malvagio, tutto il tuo corpo sarà nelle tenebre. Se dunque la luce che è in te è tenebre, quanto grandi saranno le tenebre!

24 N o one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon ( deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).

Nessuno può servire due padroni; perché o odierà l’uno e amerà l’altro, o avrà riguardo per l’uno e disprezzo per l’altro. Voi non potete servire Dio e Mammona. Le preoccupazioni

25 T herefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater than food, and the body than clothing?

«Perciò vi dico: non siate in ansia per la vostra vita, di che cosa mangerete {o di che cosa berrete}; né per il vostro corpo, di che vi vestirete. Non è la vita più del nutrimento e il corpo più del vestito?

26 L ook at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?

Guardate gli uccelli del cielo: non seminano, non mietono, non raccolgono in granai, e il Padre vostro celeste li nutre. Non valete voi molto più di loro?

27 A nd who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life?

E chi di voi può, con la propria ansietà, aggiungere un’ora sola alla durata della sua vita ?

28 A nd why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin.

E perché siete così ansiosi per il vestire? Osservate come crescono i gigli della campagna: essi non faticano e non filano;

29 Y et I tell you, even Solomon in all his magnificence (excellence, dignity, and grace) was not arrayed like one of these.

eppure io vi dico che neanche Salomone, con tutta la sua gloria, si vestì come uno di loro.

30 B ut if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and green and tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, will He not much more surely clothe you, O you of little faith?

Ora se Dio veste in questa maniera l’erba dei campi che oggi è, e domani è gettata nel forno, non farà molto di più per voi, o gente di poca fede?

31 T herefore do not worry and be anxious, saying, What are we going to have to eat? or, What are we going to have to drink? or, What are we going to have to wear?

Non siate dunque in ansia, dicendo: “Che mangeremo? Che berremo? Di che ci vestiremo?”

32 F or the Gentiles (heathen) wish for and crave and diligently seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows well that you need them all.

Perché sono i pagani che ricercano tutte queste cose; il Padre vostro celeste, infatti, sa che avete bisogno di tutte queste cose.

33 B ut seek ( aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ( His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.

Cercate prima il regno {di Dio} e la sua giustizia, e tutte queste cose vi saranno date in più.

34 S o do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.

Non siate dunque in ansia per il domani, perché il domani si preoccuperà di se stesso. Basta a ciascun giorno il suo affanno.
