1 N ow the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, None of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.

Gli uomini d’Israele avevano giurato a Mispa, dicendo: «Nessuno di noi darà sua figlia in moglie a un Beniaminita».

2 A nd the Israelites came to the house of God and sat there until evening before God and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.

Il popolo venne a Betel, dove rimase fino alla sera in presenza di Dio; alzando la voce, pianse a dirotto e disse:

3 A nd they said, O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?

« Signore, Dio d’Israele, perché mai è avvenuto questo in Israele? Perché oggi c’è in Israele una tribù di meno?

4 A nd next morning the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

Il giorno seguente, il popolo si alzò di buon mattino, costruì là un altare e offrì olocausti e sacrifici di riconoscenza.

5 A nd the Israelites said, Which among all the tribes of Israel did not come up with the assembly to the Lord? For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely die.

I figli d’Israele dissero: «Chi è, fra tutte le tribù d’Israele, che non sia salito all’assemblea davanti al Signore ?» Poiché avevano fatto questo giuramento solenne contro chiunque non fosse salito in presenza del Signore a Mispa: «Quel tale dovrà essere messo a morte».

6 A nd the Israelites changed their purpose for the Benjamites their kinsmen and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel today.

I figli d’Israele ebbero pietà di Beniamino, loro fratello, e dissero: «Oggi è stata soppressa una tribù d’Israele.

7 W hat shall we do for wives for those who are left, seeing we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them our daughters as wives?

Come faremo a procurare delle donne ai superstiti, visto che abbiamo giurato nel nome del Signore di non dar loro in moglie nessuna delle nostre figlie?»

8 A nd they said, Which one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to Mizpah to the Lord? And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly.

Dissero dunque: «Qual è fra le tribù d’Israele quella che non è salita in presenza del Signore a Mispa?» Ecco che nessuno di Iabes in Galaad era venuto all’accampamento, all’assemblea;

9 F or when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the citizens of Jabesh-gilead was there.

poiché, fatto il censimento del popolo, si trovò che là non vi era nessuno degli abitanti di Iabes in Galaad.

10 A nd the congregation sent there 12, 000 of the bravest men, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the sword, also the women and the little ones.

Allora la comunità mandò là dodicimila uomini fra i più valorosi e diede loro quest’ordine: «Andate e passate a fil di spada gli abitanti di Iabes in Galaad, con le donne e i bambini.

11 A nd this is what you shall do; utterly destroy every male and every woman who is not a virgin.

Farete questo: voterete allo sterminio ogni maschio e ogni donna che ha avuto relazioni carnali con un uomo».

12 A nd they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins, who had known no man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

Quelli trovarono, fra gli abitanti di Iabes in Galaad, quattrocento fanciulle che non avevano avuto relazioni carnali con uomini e le condussero all’accampamento, a Silo, che è nel paese di Canaan.

13 A nd the whole congregation sent word to the Benjamites who were at the rock of Rimmon and invited them to be friendly with them.

Tutta la comunità inviò dei messaggeri per parlare ai figli di Beniamino che erano al masso di Rimmon per annunciare loro la pace.

14 A nd Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; and yet there were not enough for them.

Allora i Beniaminiti tornarono e furono loro date le donne di Iabes in Galaad a cui era stata risparmiata la vita; ma non ve ne fu abbastanza per tutti.

15 A nd the people had compassion on Benjamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

Il popolo dunque ebbe pietà di Beniamino, perché il Signore aveva aperto una breccia fra le tribù d’Israele.

16 T hen the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women of Benjamin are destroyed?

Gli anziani della comunità dissero: «Come faremo a procurare delle donne ai superstiti, visto che le donne beniaminite sono state distrutte?»

17 A nd they said, There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe shall not be wiped out of Israel.

Poi dissero: «Quelli che sono scampati rimangano in possesso di ciò che apparteneva a Beniamino, affinché non sia soppressa una tribù in Israele.

18 B ut we cannot give them wives of our daughters, for the Israelites have sworn, Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.

Ma noi non possiamo dar loro le nostre figlie in moglie». Poiché i figli d’Israele avevano giurato, dicendo: «Maledetto chi darà una moglie a Beniamino!»

19 S o they said, Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem and south of Lebonah.

Allora dissero: «Ecco, ogni anno si fa una festa in onore del Signore a Silo, che è a nord di Betel, a oriente della strada che sale da Betel a Sichem e a mezzogiorno di Lebna».

20 S o they commanded the Benjamites, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

Diedero quest’ordine ai figli di Beniamino: «Andate e fate un’imboscata nelle vigne;

21 A nd watch; if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and catch every man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin.

state attenti, e quando le figlie di Silo usciranno per danzare in gruppo, sbucherete dalle vigne; ciascuno rapirà una delle figlie di Silo per prenderla in moglie e ve ne andrete nel paese di Beniamino.

22 A nd when their fathers or their brothers come to us to complain, we will say to them, Grant them graciously unto us, because we did not reserve a wife for each of them in battle, neither did you give wives to them, for that would have made you guilty.

Quando i loro padri o i loro fratelli verranno a lamentarsi con noi, noi diremo loro: “Datecele, per favore, poiché in questa guerra non abbiamo preso una donna per uno. Inoltre non siete voi che gliele avete date; in quel caso, voi sareste colpevoli”».

23 A nd the Benjamites did so and took wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off; then they went and returned to their inheritance and repaired the towns and dwelt in them.

I figli di Beniamino fecero a quel modo: si presero delle mogli, secondo il loro numero, fra le danzatrici; le rapirono, poi partirono e tornarono nella loro eredità, ricostruirono le città e vi stabilirono la loro dimora.

24 A nd the Israelites left there then, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.

In quel medesimo tempo, i figli d’Israele se ne andarono di là e tornarono ciascuno nella sua tribù e nella sua famiglia, ciascuno nel luogo della sua eredità.

25 I n those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.

In quel tempo non c’era re in Israele; ognuno faceva quello che gli pareva meglio.
