1 A bsalom son of David had a fair sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon son of David loved her.

Dopo queste cose avvenne che Absalom, figlio di Davide, aveva una sorella di nome Tamar, che era bella; e Amnon, figlio di Davide, se ne innamorò.

2 A nd Amnon was so troubled that he fell sick for his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and Amnon thought it impossible for him to do anything to her.

Amnon si appassionò a tal punto per Tamar, sua sorella, da diventarne malato; perché lei era vergine e pareva difficile ad Amnon di fare qualche tentativo con lei.

3 B ut Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very crafty man.

Amnon aveva un amico di nome Ionadab, figlio di Simea, fratello di Davide; Ionadab era un uomo molto accorto.

4 H e said to Amnon, Why are you, the king’s son, so lean and weak-looking from day to day? Will you not tell me? And Amnon said to him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.

Questi gli disse: «Come mai tu, figlio del re, sei ogni giorno più deperito? Non me lo vuoi dire?» Amnon gli rispose: «Sono innamorato di Tamar, sorella di mio fratello Absalom».

5 J onadab said to him, Go to bed and pretend you are sick; and when your father David comes to see you, say to him, Let my sister Tamar come and give me food and prepare it in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.

Ionadab gli disse: «Mettiti a letto e fingiti malato. Quando tuo padre verrà a vederti, digli: “Fa’, ti prego, che mia sorella Tamar venga a darmi da mangiare e a preparare il cibo in mia presenza perché io lo veda e mangi quel che mi darà”».

6 S o Amnon lay down and pretended to be sick; and when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, I pray you, let my sister Tamar come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.

Amnon dunque si mise a letto e si finse ammalato; e quando il re lo venne a vedere, Amnon gli disse: «Fa’, ti prego, che mia sorella Tamar venga e prepari un paio di frittelle in mia presenza; così mangerò quel che mi darà».

7 T hen David sent home and told Tamar, Go now to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.

Allora Davide mandò a dire a Tamar: «Va’ a casa di Amnon e preparagli qualcosa da mangiare».

8 S o Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, and he was in bed. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked them.

Tamar andò a casa di Amnon, suo fratello, che era a letto; prese della farina stemperata, l’intrise, preparò delle frittelle e le fece cuocere davanti a lui.

9 S he took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Send everyone out from me. So everyone went out from him.

Poi prese la padella, servì le frittelle e gliele mise davanti, ma egli rifiutò di mangiare e disse: «Fate uscire di qui tutta la gente». Tutti uscirono.

10 T hen Amnon said to Tamar, Bring the food here into the bedroom, so I may eat from your hand. So Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the room to Amnon her brother.

Allora Amnon disse a Tamar: «Portami il cibo in camera e lo prenderò dalle tue mani». Tamar prese le frittelle che aveva fatte e le portò in camera ad Amnon, suo fratello.

11 A nd when she brought them to him, he took hold of her and said, Come lie with me, my sister.

Ma mentre gliele porgeva perché mangiasse, egli l’afferrò e le disse: «Vieni a unirti a me, sorella mia».

12 S he replied, No, my brother! Do not force and humble me, for no such thing should be done in Israel! Do not do this foolhardy, scandalous thing!

Lei gli rispose: «No, fratello mio, non farmi violenza; questo non si fa in Israele; non commettere una tale infamia!

13 A nd I, how could I rid myself of my shame? And you, you will be one of the stupid fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray you, speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.

Io dove potrei andare piena di vergogna? E quanto a te, tu saresti considerato un infame in Israele. Te ne prego, parlane piuttosto al re, egli non ti rifiuterà il permesso di sposarmi».

14 B ut he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he forced her and lay with her.

Ma egli non volle darle ascolto e, essendo più forte di lei, la violentò e si unì a lei.

15 T hen Amnon hated her exceedingly, so that his hatred for her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, Get up and get out!

Poi Amnon ebbe verso di lei un odio fortissimo, a tal punto che l’odio per lei fu maggiore dell’amore di cui l’aveva amata prima. Le disse: «Àlzati, vattene!»

16 B ut she said, No! This great evil of sending me away is worse than what you did to me. But he would not listen to her.

Lei gli rispose: «Non mi fare, cacciandomi, un torto maggiore di quello che mi hai già fatto». Ma egli non volle darle ascolto.

17 H e called the servant who served him and said, Put this woman out of my presence now, and bolt the door after her!

Anzi, chiamato il servo che lo assisteva, gli disse: «Caccia via da me costei e chiudile dietro la porta!»

18 N ow was wearing a long robe with sleeves and of various colors, for in such robes were the king’s virgin daughters clad of old. Then Amnon’s servant brought her out and bolted the door after her.

Lei portava una tunica con le maniche, perché le figlie del re portavano simili vesti finché erano vergini. Il servo di Amnon dunque la mise fuori e le chiuse la porta dietro.

19 A nd put ashes on her head and tore the long, sleeved robe which she wore, and she laid her hand on her head and went away shrieking and wailing.

E Tamar si sparse della cenere sulla testa, si stracciò di dosso la tunica con le maniche, e mettendosi la mano sul capo, se ne andò gridando.

20 A nd Absalom her brother said to her, Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet now, my sister. He is your brother; take not this matter to heart. So Tamar dwelt in her brother Absalom’s house, a desolate woman.

Absalom, suo fratello, le disse: «Forse che Amnon, tuo fratello, è stato con te? Per ora taci, sorella mia; egli è tuo fratello; non tormentarti per questo». Tamar, desolata, rimase in casa di Absalom, suo fratello.

21 B ut when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.

Il re Davide udì tutte queste cose e si adirò molto.

22 A nd Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon because he had humbled his sister Tamar.

Absalom non disse una parola ad Amnon né in bene né in male; perché odiava Amnon per la violenza che aveva fatta a Tamar, sua sorella. Absalom fa uccidere Amnon; la sua fuga

23 A fter two full years Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.

Due anni dopo, Absalom faceva tosare le sue pecore a Baal-Asor presso Efraim, e invitò tutti i figli del re.

24 A bsalom came to the king and said, Behold, your servant has sheepshearers; I pray you, let the king and his servants go with your servant.

Absalom andò a trovare il re e gli disse: «Ecco, il tuo servo ha i tosatori; ti prego, venga anche il re con i suoi servitori a casa del tuo servo!»

25 A nd the king said to Absalom, No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you. Absalom urged David; still he would not go, but he blessed him.

Ma il re disse ad Absalom: «No, figlio mio, non andiamo tutti, affinché non ti siamo di peso». Sebbene Absalom insistesse, il re non volle andare; ma gli diede la sua benedizione.

26 T hen said Absalom, If not, I pray you, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said to him, Why should he go with you?

Absalom disse: «Se non vuoi venire, ti prego, permetti ad Amnon, mio fratello, di venire con noi». Il re gli rispose: «Perché dovrebbe andare con te?»

27 B ut Absalom urged him, and he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.

Ma Absalom tanto insisté, che Davide lasciò andare con lui Amnon e tutti i figli del re.

28 N ow Absalom commanded his servants, Notice now, when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine and when I say to you, Strike Amnon, then kill him. Fear not; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and brave.

Allora Absalom diede quest’ordine ai suoi servi: «Badate, quando Amnon avrà il cuore riscaldato dal vino e io vi dirò: “Colpite Amnon!”, uccidetelo, e non abbiate paura; non sono io che ve lo comando? Fatevi coraggio e comportatevi da forti!»

29 A nd the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose and every man mounted his mule and fled.

I servi di Absalom fecero ad Amnon come Absalom aveva comandato. Allora tutti i figli del re si alzarono, montarono ciascuno sul suo mulo e fuggirono.

30 W hile they were on the way, the word came to David, Absalom has killed all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.

Mentre essi erano ancora per via, giunse a Davide la notizia che Absalom aveva ucciso tutti i figli del re e che neppure uno di loro era scampato.

31 T hen the king arose and tore his garments and lay on the floor; and all his servants standing by tore their clothes.

Allora il re si alzò, si strappò le vesti e si gettò per terra e tutti i suoi servi gli stavano accanto, con le vesti stracciate.

32 B ut Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, Let not my lord suppose they have killed all the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead. This purpose has shown itself on Absalom’s determined mouth ever since the day Amnon humiliated his sister Tamar.

Ma Ionadab, figlio di Simea, fratello di Davide, prese a dire: «Non dica il mio signore che tutti i giovani, figli del re, sono stati uccisi; solo Amnon è morto; per Absalom era cosa decisa fin dal giorno che Amnon gli violentò sua sorella Tamar.

33 S o let not my lord the king take the thing to heart and think all the king’s sons are dead; for Amnon only is dead.

Quindi non si affligga il re mio signore come se tutti i figli del re fossero morti; solo Amnon è morto. E Absalom è fuggito».

34 B ut Absalom fled. And the young man who kept the watch looked up, and behold, many people were coming by the way of the hillside behind him.

Il giovane che stava di sentinella alzò gli occhi, guardò e vide che una gran folla di gente veniva per la via di ponente, dal lato del monte.

35 A nd Jonadab said to the king, See, the king’s sons are coming. It is as your servant said.

Ionadab disse al re: «Ecco i figli del re che arrivano! Le cose stanno come il tuo servo ha detto».

36 A nd as he finished speaking, the king’s sons came and lifted up their voices and wept; and the king also and all his servants wept very bitterly.

Appena finì di parlare, ecco giungere i figli del re, i quali alzarono la voce e piansero; anche il re e tutti i suoi servitori versarono abbondanti lacrime.

37 B ut Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.

Absalom fuggì e andò da Talmai, figlio di Ammiur, re di Ghesur. Davide faceva cordoglio per suo figlio ogni giorno.

38 S o Absalom fled to Geshur and was there three years.

Absalom rimase tre anni a Ghesur, dove era andato dopo essersi dato alla fuga.

39 A nd the spirit of King David longed to go forth to Absalom, for he was comforted about Amnon, seeing that he was dead.

Poi l’ira del re Davide contro Absalom si calmò, perché Davide si era consolato della morte di Amnon.
