1 T hen the Lord said to me, Take a large tablet and write upon it with a graving tool and in ordinary characters: Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

Il Signore mi disse: «Prendi una tavoletta grande e scrivici sopra in caratteri leggibili: “Affrettate il saccheggio! Presto, al bottino!”»

2 A nd I took faithful witnesses to record and attest for me, Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.

Mi scelsi come testimoni fedeli il sacerdote Uria e Zaccaria, figlio di Ieberechia.

3 A nd I approached the prophetess, and when she had conceived and borne a son, the Lord said to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz,

Mi unii pure alla profetessa, e lei concepì e partorì un figlio. Allora il Signore mi disse: «Chiamalo “Affrettate il saccheggio. Presto al bottino”;

4 F or before the child knows how to say, My father or my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried away before the king of Assyria.

poiché prima che il bambino sappia chiamare papà e mamma, le ricchezze di Damasco e il bottino di Samaria saranno portati davanti al re d’Assiria».

5 T he Lord spoke to me yet again and said,

Il Signore mi parlò ancora e mi disse:

6 B ecause this people have refused and despised the waters of Shiloah that go gently, and rejoice in and with Rezin and Remaliah’s son,

«Siccome questo popolo ha disprezzato le acque di Siloe che scorrono placide, e si rallegra a causa di Resin e del figlio di Remalia,

7 N ow therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them the waters of the River, strong and many—even the king of Assyria and all the glory; and it will rise over all its channels, brooks, valleys, and canals and extend far beyond its banks;

ecco, il Signore sta per far salire su di loro le potenti e grandi acque del fiume, cioè il re d’Assiria e tutta la sua gloria; esso s’innalzerà dappertutto sopra il suo livello, e strariperà su tutte le sue sponde.

8 A nd it will sweep on into Judah; it will overflow and go over, reaching even to the neck, and the outstretched wings shall fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel!

Passerà sopra Giuda, inonderà e passerà oltre; arriverà fino al collo, e le sue ali spiegate copriranno tutta la larghezza del tuo paese, o Emmanuele!»

9 M ake an uproar and be broken in pieces, O you peoples! Give ear, all you of far countries. Gird yourselves, and be thrown into consternation! Gird yourselves, and be dismayed!

Mandate pure grida di guerra, o popoli; sarete frantumati! Prestate orecchio, o voi tutti di paesi lontani! Preparatevi pure alla lotta; sarete frantumati!

10 T ake counsel together, but it shall come to nought; speak the word, but it will not stand, for God is with us!

Fate pure dei piani, e saranno sventati! Dite pure la parola, e rimarrà senza effetto, perché Dio è con noi!

11 F or the Lord spoke thus to me with His strong hand, and warned and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

Così infatti mi ha parlato il Signore, quando la sua mano mi ha afferrato, ed egli mi ha avvertito di non camminare per la via di questo popolo, e mi ha detto:

12 D o not call conspiracy all that this people will call conspiracy; neither be in fear of what they fear, nor in dread.

«Non chiamate congiura tutto ciò che questo popolo chiama congiura; non temete ciò che esso teme, e non vi spaventate.

13 T he Lord of hosts—regard Him as holy and honor His holy name, and let Him be your fear and let Him be your dread.

Santificate il Signore degli eserciti! Sia lui quello per cui provate timore e paura!

14 A nd He shall be a sanctuary; but He shall be a Stone of stumbling and a Rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Egli sarà un santuario, ma anche una pietra d’intoppo, un sasso d’inciampo per le due case d’Israele, un laccio e una rete per gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

15 A nd many among them shall stumble thereon; and they shall fall and be broken, and be snared and taken.

Molti di loro inciamperanno, cadranno, saranno infranti, rimarranno nel laccio e saranno presi.

16 B ind up the testimony, seal the law and the teaching among my disciples.

Chiudi questa testimonianza, sigilla questa legge tra i miei discepoli».

17 A nd I will wait for the Lord, Who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; and I will look for and hope in Him.

Io aspetto il Signore, che nasconde la sua faccia alla casa di Giacobbe; in lui ripongo la mia speranza.

18 B ehold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, Who dwells on Mount Zion.

Eccomi con i figli che il Signore mi ha dati; noi siamo dei segni e dei presagi in Israele da parte del Signore degli eserciti, che abita sul monte Sion.

19 A nd when the people shall say to you, Consult for direction mediums and wizards who chirp and mutter, should not a people seek and consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Se vi si dice: «Consultate quelli che evocano gli spiriti e gli indovini, quelli che sussurrano e bisbigliano», rispondete: «Un popolo non deve forse consultare il suo Dio? Si rivolgerà forse ai morti in favore dei vivi?

20 t o the teaching and to the testimony! If their teachings are not in accord with this word, it is surely because there is no dawn and no morning for them.

Alla legge! Alla testimonianza!» Se il popolo non parla così, non vi sarà per lui nessuna aurora!

21 A nd they shall pass through sorely distressed and hungry; and when they are hungry, they will fret, and will curse by their king and their God; and whether they look upward

Andrà peregrinando per il paese, affranto e affamato; quando avrà fame, si irriterà e maledirà il suo re e il suo Dio. Volgerà lo sguardo in alto,

22 O r look to the earth, they will behold only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and into thick darkness and widespread, obscure night they shall be driven away.

lo volgerà verso terra, ed ecco, non vedrà che difficoltà, tenebre e oscurità piena d’angoscia; sarà sospinto in mezzo a fitte tenebre.
