1 T hus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Moab and for four, I will not reverse the punishment of it or revoke My word concerning it, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.

Così parla il Signore: «Per tre misfatti di Moab, anzi per quattro, io non revocherò la mia sentenza, perché ha bruciato e calcinato le ossa del re di Edom.

2 S o I will send a fire upon Moab and it shall devour the strongholds of Kerioth, and Moab shall die amid uproar, shouting, and the sound of the trumpet.

Io manderò in Moab un fuoco che divorerà i palazzi di Cheriot. Moab perirà in mezzo al tumulto, alle grida di guerra e al suono delle trombe;

3 A nd I will cut off the ruler from its midst and will slay all its princes with him, says the Lord.

in mezzo ad esso sterminerò il giudice e ucciderò tutti i suoi prìncipi, con lui», dice il Signore.

4 T hus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Judah and for four, I will not reverse the punishment of it or revoke My word concerning it, because they have despised and rejected the law of the Lord and have not kept His commandments, but their lies, after which their fathers have walked, caused them to err and go astray.

Così parla il Signore: «Per tre misfatti di Giuda, anzi per quattro, io non revocherò la mia sentenza, perché hanno disprezzato la legge del Signore e non hanno osservato i suoi precetti, e perché si sono lasciati sviare dai loro falsi dèi, dietro i quali erano già andati i loro padri.

5 S o I will send a fire upon Judah and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.

Io manderò in Giuda un fuoco che divorerà i palazzi di Gerusalemme».

6 T hus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Israel and for four, I will not reverse the punishment of it or revoke My word concerning it, because they have sold the just and uncompromisingly righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals;

Così parla il Signore: «Per tre misfatti d’Israele, anzi per quattro, io non revocherò la mia sentenza, perché vendono il giusto per denaro e il povero a causa di un paio di sandali;

7 T hey pant after the poor dust of the earth on their heads; they defraud and turn aside the humble; and a man and his father will have sexual relations with the same maiden, so that My holy name is profaned.

perché desiderano veder la polvere della terra sulla testa degli indifesi, violano il diritto degli umili e figlio e padre vanno dalla stessa ragazza, per profanare il mio santo nome.

8 A nd they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes they have taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they frivolously drink the wine which has been exacted from those fined.

Si stendono accanto a ogni altare su vestiti presi in pegno, e nella casa del loro Dio bevono il vino di chi viene multato.

9 Y et I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above and his roots from beneath.

Eppure io ho distrutto davanti a loro l’Amoreo, la cui statura era come l’altezza dei cedri e che era forte come le querce; io ho distrutto il suo frutto in alto e le sue radici in basso.

10 A lso I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years through the wilderness to possess the land of the Amorite.

Eppure io vi ho condotti fuori dal paese d’Egitto e vi ho guidati per quarant’anni nel deserto, per darvi il paese dell’Amoreo.

11 A nd I raised up some of your sons for prophets and some of your young men for dedicated ones. Is this not true, O you children of Israel? says the Lord.

Ho suscitato dei profeti tra i vostri figli e dei nazirei tra i vostri giovani. Non è forse così, o figli d’Israele?», dice il Signore.

12 B ut you gave the dedicated ones wine to drink and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.

«Ma voi avete dato da bere del vino ai nazirei e avete ordinato ai profeti di non profetizzare!

13 B ehold, I am pressed under you and I will press you down in your place as a cart presses that is full of sheaves.

Ecco, io vi schiaccerò, come un carro carico di covoni schiaccia la terra.

14 A nd flight shall be lost to the swift and refuge shall fail him; the strong shall not retain and confirm his strength, neither shall the mighty deliver himself.

L’agile non avrà modo di darsi alla fuga, il forte non potrà servirsi della sua forza e il valoroso non scamperà;

15 N either shall he stand who handles the bow, and he who is swift of foot shall not deliver himself; neither shall he who rides the horse deliver his life.

chi maneggia l’arco non potrà resistere, chi ha il piede veloce non potrà scampare; il cavaliere sul suo cavallo non si salverà,

16 A nd he who is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked on that day, says the Lord.

il più coraggioso fra i prodi fuggirà nudo in quel giorno», dice il Signore.
