1 H ear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come to You.

Preghiera dell’afflitto quando è abbattuto e sfoga il suo pianto davanti al Signore. Signore, ascolta la mia preghiera e giunga fino a te il mio grido!

2 H ide not Your face from me in the day when I am in distress! Incline Your ear to me; in the day when I call, answer me speedily.

Non nascondermi il tuo volto nel giorno della mia sventura; porgi il tuo orecchio verso di me; quando t’invoco, affrèttati a rispondermi.

3 F or my days consume away like smoke, and my bones burn like a firebrand or like a hearth.

Poiché i miei giorni svaniscono in fumo e le mie ossa si consumano come un tizzone.

4 M y heart is smitten like grass and withered, so that I forget to eat my food.

Il mio cuore, afflitto, inaridisce come l’erba, tanto che dimentico di mangiare il mio pane.

5 B y reason of my loud groaning my flesh cleaves to my bones.

A forza di piangere la mia pelle si attacca alle ossa.

6 I am like a melancholy pelican or vulture of the wilderness; I am like a owl of the waste places.

Sono simile al pellicano del deserto, sono come il gufo dei luoghi desolati.

7 I am sleepless and lie awake, like a bereaved sparrow alone on the housetop.

Veglio e sono come il passero solitario sul tetto.

8 M y adversaries taunt and reproach me all the day; and they who are angry with me use my name as a curse.

I miei nemici mi insultano ogni giorno; quelli che mi odiano usano il mio nome come bestemmia.

9 F or I have eaten the ashes as if they were bread and have mingled my drink with weeping

Mangio cenere invece di pane, mescolo con lacrime la mia bevanda,

10 B ecause of Your indignation and Your wrath, for You have taken me up and cast me away.

a causa del tuo sdegno e della tua ira, perché mi hai sollevato e gettato lontano.

11 M y days are like an evening shadow that stretches out and declines; and I am withered like grass.

I miei giorni sono come ombra che si allunga e io inaridisco come l’erba.

12 B ut You, O Lord, are enthroned forever; and the fame of Your name endures to all generations.

Ma tu, Signore, regni per sempre e il tuo ricordo dura per ogni generazione.

13 Y ou will arise and have mercy and loving-kindness for Zion, for it is time to have pity and compassion for her; yes, the set time has come.

Tu sorgerai e avrai compassione di Sion, poiché è tempo di averne pietà; il tempo fissato è giunto.

14 F or Your servants take pleasure in the stones and show pity for her dust.

Perché i tuoi servi amano le sue pietre e hanno pietà della sua polvere.

15 S o the nations shall fear and worshipfully revere the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth Your glory.

Allora le nazioni temeranno il nome del Signore, e tutti i re della terra la tua gloria,

16 W hen the Lord builds up Zion, He will appear in His glory;

quando il Signore ricostruirà Sion e apparirà nella sua gloria.

17 H e will regard the plea of the destitute and will not despise their prayer.

Egli ascolterà la preghiera dei desolati e non disprezzerà la loro supplica.

18 L et this be recorded for the generation yet unborn, that a people yet to be created shall praise the Lord.

Questo sarà scritto per la generazione futura e il popolo che sarà creato loderà il Signore,

19 F or He looked down from the height of His sanctuary, from heaven did the Lord behold the earth,

perché egli guarda dall’alto del suo santuario; dal cielo il Signore osserva la terra

20 T o hear the sighing and groaning of the prisoner, to loose those who are appointed to death,

per ascoltare i gemiti dei prigionieri, per liberare i condannati a morte,

21 S o that men may declare the name of the Lord in Zion and His praise in Jerusalem

affinché proclamino il nome del Signore in Sion, la sua lode in Gerusalemme,

22 W hen peoples are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to worship and serve the Lord.

quando popoli e regni si raduneranno per servire il Signore.

23 H e has afflicted and weakened my strength, humbling and bringing me low in the way; He has shortened my days.

Egli ha stremato le mie forze durante il cammino; ha abbreviato i miei giorni.

24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days, You Whose years continue throughout all generations.

Ho detto: «Dio mio, non portarmi via a metà dei miei giorni!» I tuoi anni durano per ogni generazione:

25 A t the beginning You existed and laid the foundations of the earth; the heavens are the work of Your hands.

nel passato tu hai creato la terra e i cieli sono opera delle tue mani;

26 T hey shall perish, but You shall remain and endure; yes, all of them shall wear out and become old like a garment. Like clothing You shall change them, and they shall be changed and pass away.

essi periranno, ma tu rimani; tutti quanti si consumeranno come un vestito; tu li cambierai come una veste e saranno cambiati.

27 B ut You remain the same, and Your years shall have no end.

Ma tu sei sempre lo stesso e i tuoi anni non avranno mai fine.

28 T he children of Your servants shall dwell safely and continue, and their descendants shall be established before You.

I figli dei tuoi servi avranno una dimora e la loro discendenza sarà stabile in tua presenza.
