1 W oe is me! For I am as when the summer fruits have been gathered, as when the vintage grapes have been gleaned and there is no cluster to eat, no first-ripe fig for which my appetite craves.

Ahimè! Io mi trovo come dopo la raccolta dei frutti, come dopo la racimolatura, quando è finita la vendemmia: non c’è più grappolo da mangiare; io desidero invano un fico primaticcio.

2 T he godly man has perished from the earth, and there is none upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood; each hunts his brother with a net.

L’uomo pio è scomparso dalla terra; non c’è più gente retta fra gli uomini; tutti stanno in agguato per spargere il sangue, ognuno dà la caccia con la rete a suo fratello.

3 B oth their hands are put forth and are upon what is evil to do it diligently; the prince and the judge ask for a bribe, and the great man utters his evil desire. Thus they twist between them.

Le loro mani sono pronte al male, per farlo con ogni cura; il principe ha delle pretese, il giudice si lascia corrompere, il potente manifesta la sua ingordigia e ordiscono così le loro trame.

4 T he best of them is like a brier; the most upright or the straightest is like a thorn hedge. The day of your watchmen, even of judgment and your punishment, has come; now shall be their perplexity and confusion.

Il migliore di loro è simile a un rovo; il più retto è peggiore di una siepe di spine. Il giorno annunciato dalle tue sentinelle, il giorno della tua punizione viene; allora saranno nella costernazione.

5 T rust not in a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Keep the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom.

Non fidatevi del compagno, non riponete fiducia nell’amico intimo; sorveglia la porta della tua bocca davanti a colei che riposa sul tuo petto.

6 F or the son dishonors the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—a man’s enemies are the men (members) of his own house.

Perché il figlio offende il padre, la figlia insorge contro la madre, la nuora contro la suocera e i nemici di ciascuno sono quelli di casa sua. Speranza e promessa per Israele

7 B ut as for me, I will look to the Lord and confident in Him I will keep watch; I will wait with hope and expectancy for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.

Quanto a me, io volgerò lo sguardo verso il Signore, spererò nel Dio della mia salvezza; il mio Dio mi ascolterà.

8 R ejoice not against me, O my enemy! When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me.

Non ti rallegrare per me, o mia nemica! Se sono caduta, mi rialzerò; se sto seduta nelle tenebre, il Signore è la mia luce.

9 I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against Him, until He pleads my cause and executes judgment for me. He will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold His righteous deliverance.

Io sopporterò lo sdegno del Signore, perché ho peccato contro di lui, finché egli difenda la mia causa e mi faccia giustizia; egli mi condurrà fuori alla luce e io contemplerò la sua giustizia.

10 T hen my enemy will see it, and shame will cover her who said to me, Where is the Lord your God? My eyes will see my desire upon her; now she will be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

Allora la mia nemica lo vedrà e sarà coperta di vergogna; lei che mi diceva: «Dov’è il Signore, il tuo Dio?» I miei occhi la vedranno, quando sarà calpestata come il fango delle strade.

11 I n the day that your walls are to be built, in that day shall the boundary be far extended and the decree be far removed.

Verrà il giorno in cui le tue mura saranno ricostruite; quel giorno saranno allargati i tuoi confini.

12 I n that day they will come to you from Assyria and from the cities of Matzor and from Egypt even to the river, from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.

Quel giorno si verrà a te, dall’Assiria fino alle città d’Egitto, dall’Egitto sino al fiume, da mare a mare e da monte a monte.

13 Y et shall the earth be desolate because of those who dwell in it, for the fruit of their doings.

La terra sarà ridotta in un deserto a causa dei suoi abitanti, come conseguenza delle loro azioni.

14 R ule and feed Your people with Your rod and scepter, the flock of Your inheritance who dwell alone in a forest in the midst of Carmel; they shall feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.

Pasci il tuo popolo con la tua verga, il gregge della tua eredità che sta solitario nella foresta, in mezzo al Carmelo. Esso pascoli in Basan e in Galaad, come nei giorni antichi.

15 A s in the days of your coming forth from the land of Egypt, I will show them marvelous things.

«Come nei giorni in cui uscisti dal paese d’Egitto, io ti farò vedere cose meravigliose».

16 T he nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might. They shall lay their hands upon their mouths in consternation; their ears shall be deaf.

Le nazioni lo vedranno e saranno confuse, nonostante tutta la loro potenza; si metteranno la mano sulla bocca e le loro orecchie saranno assordate.

17 T hey shall lick the dust like a serpent; like crawling things of the earth they shall come trembling out of their strongholds and close places. They shall turn and come with fear and dread to the Lord our God and shall be afraid and stand in awe because of You.

Leccheranno la polvere come il serpente, come gli animali che strisciano sulla terra. Usciranno spaventate dai loro ripari, verranno tremanti al Signore, nostro Dio, e avranno timore di te.

18 W ho is a God like You, Who forgives iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retains not His anger forever, because He delights in mercy and loving-kindness.

Quale Dio è come te, che perdoni l’iniquità e passi sopra alla colpa del resto della tua eredità? Egli non serba la sua ira per sempre, perché si compiace di usare misericordia.

19 H e will again have compassion on us; He will subdue and tread underfoot our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

Egli tornerà ad avere pietà di noi, metterà sotto i suoi piedi le nostre colpe e getterà in fondo al mare tutti i nostri peccati.

20 Y ou will show Your faithfulness and perform the sure promise to Jacob and loving-kindness and mercy to Abraham, as You have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.

Tu mostrerai la tua fedeltà a Giacobbe, la tua misericordia ad Abraamo, come giurasti ai nostri padri fin dai giorni antichi.
