1 T he proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 T hat people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

perché l’uomo conosca la saggezza, l’istruzione e comprenda i detti sensati;

3 R eceive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

perché riceva istruzione sul buon senso, la giustizia, l’equità e la rettitudine;

4 T hat prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

per dare accorgimento ai semplici e conoscenza e riflessione al giovane.

5 T he wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

Il saggio ascolterà e accrescerà il suo sapere; l’uomo intelligente ne otterrà buone direttive

6 T hat people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

per capire i proverbi e le allegorie, le parole dei saggi e i loro enigmi.

7 T he reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

Il timore del Signore è il principio della scienza; gli stolti disprezzano la saggezza e l’istruzione.

8 M y son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

Ascolta, figlio mio, l’istruzione di tuo padre e non rifiutare l’insegnamento di tua madre,

9 F or they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

poiché saranno un fregio di grazia sul tuo capo e monili al tuo collo. Avvertimento contro le cattive compagnie

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Figlio mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sviare, non dar loro retta.

11 I f they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

Potranno dirti: «Vieni con noi! Mettiamoci in agguato per uccidere; tendiamo insidie senza motivo all’innocente.

12 L et us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

Inghiottiamoli vivi, come il soggiorno dei morti, e tutti interi, come quelli che scendono nella tomba;

13 W e shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

noi troveremo ogni sorta di beni preziosi, riempiremo le nostre case di bottino.

14 T hrow in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

Tu estrarrai a sorte la tua parte con noi, non ci sarà tra noi tutti che una borsa sola».

15 M y son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

Tu però, figlio mio, non t’incamminare con loro; trattieni il tuo piede lontano dal loro sentiero,

16 F or their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

poiché i loro piedi corrono al male, essi si affrettano a spargere il sangue.

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

Si tende invano la rete davanti a ogni sorta di uccelli,

18 B ut they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

Tali sono le vie di chiunque si dà alla rapina; essa toglie la vita a chi la commette. La saggezza esorta

20 W isdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

La saggezza grida per le vie, fa udire la sua voce per le piazze;

21 S he cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

negli incroci affollati essa chiama, all’ingresso delle porte, in città, pronuncia i suoi discorsi:

22 H ow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

«Fino a quando, ingenui, amerete l’ingenuità? Fino a quando gli schernitori prenderanno gusto a schernire e gli stolti avranno in odio la scienza?

23 I f you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

Volgetevi ad ascoltare la mia correzione; ecco, io farò sgorgare su di voi il mio Spirito, vi farò conoscere le mie parole.

24 B ecause I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

Poiché quand’ho chiamato avete rifiutato di ascoltare, quand’ho steso la mano nessuno vi ha badato,

25 A nd you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

anzi, avete respinto ogni mio consiglio e della mia correzione non ne avete voluto sapere,

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

anch’io riderò delle vostre sventure, mi farò beffe quando lo spavento vi piomberà addosso;

27 W hen your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

quando lo spavento vi piomberà addosso come una tempesta, quando la sventura v’investirà come un uragano e vi cadranno addosso l’afflizione e l’angoscia.

28 T hen will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

Allora mi chiameranno, ma io non risponderò; mi cercheranno con premura ma non mi troveranno.

29 B ecause they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

Poiché hanno odiato la scienza, non hanno scelto il timore del Signore,

30 W ould accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

non hanno voluto saperne dei miei consigli e hanno disprezzato ogni mia correzione,

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

si pasceranno del frutto della loro condotta e saranno saziati dei loro propri consigli.

32 F or the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

Infatti il pervertimento degli insensati li uccide e la prosperità degli stolti li fa perire,

33 B ut whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

ma chi mi ascolta starà al sicuro, vivrà tranquillo, senza paura di nessun male».
