1 T he proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

Provérbios de Salomão, filho de Davi, rei de Israel:

2 T hat people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

Para se conhecer a sabedoria e a instrução; para se entenderem as palavras de inteligência;

3 R eceive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

para se instruir em sábio procedimento, em retidão, justiça e eqüidade;

4 T hat prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

para se dar aos simples prudência, e aos jovens conhecimento e bom siso.

5 T he wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

Ouça também, o sábio e cresça em ciência, e o entendido adquira habilidade,

6 T hat people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

para entender provérbios e parábolas, as palavras dos sábios, e seus enigmas.

7 T he reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

O temor do Senhor é o princípio do conhecimento; mas os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e a instrução.

8 M y son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

Filho meu, ouve a instrução de teu pai, e não deixes o ensino de tua mãe.

9 F or they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

Porque eles serão uma grinalda de graça para a tua cabeça, e colares para o teu pescoço.

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Filho meu, se os pecadores te quiserem seduzir, não consintas.

11 I f they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

Se disserem: Vem conosco; embosquemo-nos para derramar sangue; espreitemos sem razão o inocente;

12 L et us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

traguemo-los vivos, como o Seol, e inteiros como os que descem ã cova;

13 W e shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

acharemos toda sorte de bens preciosos; encheremos as nossas casas de despojos;

14 T hrow in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

lançarás a tua sorte entre nós; teremos todos uma só bolsa;

15 M y son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

filho meu, não andes no caminho com eles; guarda da sua vereda o teu pé,

16 F or their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

porque os seus pés correm para o mal, e eles se apressam a derramar sangue.

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

Pois debalde se estende a rede ã vista de qualquer ave.

18 B ut they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

Mas estes se põem em emboscadas contra o seu próprio sangue, e as suas próprias vidas espreitam.

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

Tais são as veredas de todo aquele que se entrega ã cobiça; ela tira a vida dos que a possuem.

20 W isdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

A suprema sabedoria altissonantemente clama nas ruas; nas praças levanta a sua voz.

21 S he cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

Do alto dos muros clama;

22 H ow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

Até quando, ó estúpidos, amareis a estupidez? e até quando se deleitarão no escárnio os escarnecedores, e odiarão os insensatos o conhecimento?

23 I f you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

Convertei-vos pela minha repreensão; eis que derramarei sobre vós o meu; espírito e vos farei saber as minhas palavras.

24 B ecause I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

Mas, porque clamei, e vós recusastes; porque estendi a minha mão, e nao houve quem desse atenção;

25 A nd you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

antes desprezastes todo o meu conselho, e não fizestes caso da minha repreensão;

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

também eu me rirei no dia da vossa calamidade; zombarei, quando sobrevier o vosso terror,

27 W hen your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

quando o terror vos sobrevier como tempestade, e a vossa calamidade passar como redemoinho, e quando vos sobrevierem aperto e angústia.

28 T hen will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

Então a mim clamarão, mas eu não responderei; diligentemente me buscarão, mas não me acharão.

29 B ecause they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

Porquanto aborreceram o conhecimento, e não preferiram o temor do Senhor;

30 W ould accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

não quiseram o meu conselho e desprezaram toda a minha repreensão;

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

portanto comerão do fruto do seu caminho e se fartarão dos seus próprios conselhos.

32 F or the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

Porque o desvio dos néscios os matará, e a prosperidade dos loucos os destruirá.

33 B ut whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

Mas o que me der ouvidos habitará em segurança, e estará tranqüilo, sem receio do mal.
