1 T he proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

Pildele lui Solomon, fiul lui David, împăratul lui Israel,

2 T hat people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

pentru cunoaşterea înţelepciunii şi învăţăturii, pentru înţelegerea cuvintelor minţii;

3 R eceive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

pentru căpătarea învăţăturilor de bun simţ, de dreptate, de judecată şi de nepărtinire;

4 T hat prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

ca să dea celor neîncercaţi agerime de minte, tînărului cunoştinţă şi chibzuinţă, -

5 T he wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

să asculte însă şi înţeleptul, şi îşi va mări ştiinţa, şi cel priceput, şi va căpăta iscusinţă-

6 T hat people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

pentru prinderea înţelesului unei pilde sau al unui cuvînt adînc, înţelesul cuvintelor înţelepţilor şi al cuvintelor lor cu tîlc.

7 T he reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

Frica Domnului este începutul ştiinţei; dar nebunii nesocotesc înţelepciunea şi învăţătura.

8 M y son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

Ascultă, fiule, învăţătura tatălui tău, şi nu lepăda îndrumările mamei tale!

9 F or they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

Căci ele sînt o cunună plăcută pe capul tău, şi un lanţ de aur la gîtul tău.

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Fiule, dacă nişte păcătoşi vor să te amăgească, nu te lăsa cîştigat de ei!

11 I f they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

Dacă-ţi vor zice:,, Vino cu noi! Haidem să întindem curse ca să vărsăm sînge, să întindem fără temei laţuri celui nevinovat;

12 L et us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

haidem să -i înghiţim de vii, ca locuinţa morţilor, şi întregi, ca pe cei ce se pogoară în groapă;

13 W e shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

vom găsi tot felul de lucruri scumpe, şi ne vom umplea casele cu pradă;

14 T hrow in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

vei avea şi tu partea ta la fel cu noi, o pungă vom avea cu toţii!`` -

15 M y son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

fiule, să nu porneşti la drum cu ei, abate-ţi piciorul de pe cărarea lor!

16 F or their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

Căci picioarele lor aleargă la rău, şi se grăbesc să verse sînge.

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

Dar degeaba se aruncă laţul înaintea ochilor tuturor păsărilor;

18 B ut they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

căci ei întind curse tocmai împotriva sîngelui lor, şi sufletului lor îşi întind ei laţuri.

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

Aceasta este soarta tuturor celor lacomi de cîştig: lăcomia aduce pierderea celor ce se dedau la ea.

20 W isdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

Înţelepciunea strigă pe uliţe, îşi înalţă glasul în pieţe:

21 S he cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

strigă unde e zarva mai mare; la porţi, în cetate, îşi spune cuvintele ei:

22 H ow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

Pînă cînd veţi iubi prostia, proştilor? Pînă cînd le va plăcea batjocoritorilor batjocura, şi vor urî nebunii ştiinţa?

23 I f you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

Întoarceţi-vă să ascultaţi mustrările mele! Iată, voi turna duhul meu peste voi, vă voi face cunoscut cuvintele mele...

24 B ecause I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

Fiindcă eu chem şi voi vă împotriviţi, fiindcă îmi întind mîna şi nimeni ia seama,

25 A nd you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

fiindcă lepădaţi toate sfaturile mele, şi nu vă plac mustrările mele,

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

de aceea şi eu, voi rîde cînd veţi fi în vreo nenorocire, îmi voi bate joc de voi cînd vă va apuca groaza,

27 W hen your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

cînd vă va apuca groaza ca o furtună, şi cînd vă va învălui nenorocirea ca un vîrtej, cînd va da peste voi necazul şi strîmtorarea.

28 T hen will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

Atunci mă vor chema, şi nu voi răspunde; mă vor căuta, şi nu mă vor găsi.

29 B ecause they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

Pentrucă au urît ştiinţa, şi n'au ales frica Domnului,

30 W ould accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

pentrucă n'au iubit sfaturile mele, şi au nesocotit toate mustrările mele.

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

De aceea se vor hrăni cu roada umbletelor lor, şi se vor sătura cu sfaturile lor.

32 F or the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

Căci împotrivirea proştilor îi ucide, şi liniştea nebunilor îi pierde;

33 B ut whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

dar cel ce m'ascultă va locui fără grijă, va trăi liniştit şi fără să se teamă de vreun rău.
