1 T hen Job answered,

Iov a luat cuvîntul şi a zis:

2 N o doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!

S'ar putea zice, în adevăr, că neamul omenesc sînteţi voi, şi că odată cu voi va muri şi înţelepciunea!

3 B ut I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these ?

Am şi eu minte ca voi, nu sînt mai pe jos decît voi. Şi cine nu ştie lucrurile pe cari le spuneţi voi?

4 I am become one who is a laughingstock to his friend; I, one whom God answered when he called upon Him—a just, upright (blameless) man—laughed to scorn!

Eu sînt de batjocura prietenilor mei, cînd cer ajutorul lui Dumnezeu: dreptul, nevinovatul, de batjocură!

5 I n the thought of him who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune—but it is ready for those whose feet slip.

Dispreţ în nenorocire! -iată zicerea celor fericiţi: dă brînci cui alunecă cu piciorul!

6 T he dwellings of robbers prosper; those who provoke God are secure; God supplies them abundantly.

Jăfuitorilor li se lasă corturile în pace, celor ce mînie pe Dumnezeu le merge bine, măcar că Dumnezeul lor este în pumn.

7 F or ask now the animals, and they will teach you; ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you;

Întreabă dobitoacele, şi te vor învăţa, păsările cerului, şi îţi vor spune;

8 O r speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.

vorbeşte pămîntului, şi te va învăţa; şi peştii mării îţi vor povesti.

9 W ho not to recognize in all these that it is God’s hand which does it ?

Cine nu vede în toate acestea dovada că mîna Domnului a făcut asemenea lucruri?

10 I n His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

El ţine în mînă sufletul a tot ce trăieşte, suflarea oricărui trup omenesc.

11 I s it not the task of the ear to discriminate between words, just as the mouth distinguishes food?

Nu deosebeşte urechea cuvintele, cum gustă cerul gurii mîncările?

12 W ith the aged is wisdom, and with length of days comes understanding.

La bătrîni se găseşte înţelepciunea, şi într'o viaţă lungă e priceperea.

13 B ut with are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding.

La Dumnezeu este înţelepciunea şi puterea; sfatul şi priceperea ale Lui sînt.

14 B ehold, He tears down, and it cannot be built again; He shuts a man in, and none can open.

Ce dărîmă El, nu va fi zidit din nou; pe cine -l închide El, nimeni nu -l va scăpa.

15 H e withholds the waters, and the land dries up; again, He sends forth, and they overwhelm the land or transform it.

El opreşte apele şi totul se usucă; El le dă drumul, şi pustiesc pămîntul.

16 W ith Him are might and wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.

El are puterea şi înţelepciunea; El stăpîneşte pe celce se rătăceşte sau rătăceşte pe alţii.

17 H e leads counselors away stripped and barefoot and makes the judges fools.

El ia robi pe sfetnici, şi turbură mintea judecătorilor.

18 H e looses the fetters by kings and has waistcloth bound about their loins.

El desleagă legătura împăraţilor, şi le pune o frînghie în jurul coapselor.

19 H e leads away priests as spoil, and men firmly seated He overturns.

El ia robi pe preoţi; El răstoarnă pe cei puternici

20 H e deprives of speech those who are trusted and takes away the discernment and discretion of the aged.

El taie vorba celor meşteri la vorbă; El ia mintea celor bătrîni.

21 H e pours contempt on princes and loosens the belt of the strong.

El varsă dispreţul asupra celor mari; El desleagă brîul celor tari.

22 H e uncovers deep things out of darkness and brings into light black gloom and the shadow of death.

El descopere ce este ascuns în întunerec, El aduce la lumină umbra morţii.

23 H e makes nations great, and He destroys them; He enlarges nations, and leads them.

El face pe neamuri să crească, şi El le nimiceşte; El le întinde pînă departe, şi El le aduce înapoi în hotarele lor.

24 H e takes away understanding from the leaders of the people of the land and of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no path.

El ia mintea căpeteniilor poporului, El îi face să rătăcească în pustiuri fără drum,

25 T hey grope in the dark without light, and He makes them to stagger and wander like a drunken man.

unde bîjbăie prin întunerec, şi nu văd desluşit; El îi face să se clatine ca nişte oameni beţi.
