1 N ow Abraham journeyed from there toward the South country (the Negeb) and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he lived temporarily in Gerar.

Avraam a plecat de acolo în ţara de meazăzi, s'a aşezat între Cades şi Şur, şi a locuit ca străin în Gherar.

2 A nd Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

Avraam zicea despre Sara, nevastă-sa:,, Este sora-mea!`` S'a temut să spună că este nevastă-sa, ca să nu -l omoare oamenii din cetate din pricina ei. Abimelec, împăratul Gherarei, a trimes şi a luat pe Sara.

3 B ut God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said, Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.

Atunci Dumnezeu S'a arătat noaptea în vis lui Abimelec, şi i -a zis:,, Iată, ai să mori din pricina femeii, pe care ai luat -o, căci este nevasta unui bărbat.``

4 B ut Abimelech had not come near her, so he said, Lord, will you slay a people who are just and innocent?

Abimelec, care nu se apropiase de ea, a răspuns:,, Doamne, vei omorî Tu oare chiar şi un neam nevinovat?

5 D id not the man tell me, She is my sister? And she herself said, He is my brother. In integrity of heart and innocency of hands I have done this.

Nu mi -a spus el că este soră-sa? Şi n'a zis ea însăş că el este frate-său? Eu am lucrat cu inimă curată şi cu mîni nevinovate.``

6 T hen God said to him in the dream, Yes, I know you did this in the integrity of your heart, for it was I Who kept you back and spared you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not give you occasion to touch her.

Dumnezeu i -a zis în vis:,,Ştiu şi Eu că ai lucrat cu inimă curată: deaceea te-am şi ferit să păcătuieşti împotriva Mea. Iată de ce n'am îngăduit să te atingi de ea.

7 S o now restore to the man his wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.

Acum, dă omului nevasta înapoi; căci el este prooroc, se va ruga pentru tine, şi vei trăi. Dar, dacă n'o dai înapoi, să ştii că vei muri negreşit, tu şi tot ce -i al tău.``

8 S o Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told them all these things; and the men were exceedingly filled with reverence and fear.

Abimelec s'a sculat disdedimineaţă, a chemat pe toţi slujitorii săi, şi le -a spus tot ce se întîmplase. Şi oamenii aceia au fost cuprinşi de o mare spaimă.

9 T hen Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, What have you done to us? And how have I offended you that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me what ought not to be done.

Abimelec a chemat şi pe Avraam şi i -a zis:,, Ce ne-ai făcut? Şi cu ce am păcătuit eu împotriva ta, de ai făcut să vină peste mine şi peste împărăţia mea un păcat atît de mare? Ai făcut faţă de mine lucruri cari nu trebuiau nicidecum făcute.``

10 A nd Abimelech said to Abraham, What did you see that you in doing such a thing as this?

Şi Abimelec a zis lui Avraam:,, Ce ai văzut de ai făcut lucrul acesta?``

11 A nd Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely there is no reverence or fear of God at all in this place, and they will slay me because of my wife.

Avraam a răspuns:,,Îmi ziceam că, fără îndoială, nu -i nici o frică de Dumnezeu în ţara aceasta, şi că au să mă omoare din pricina nevestei mele.

12 B ut truly, she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father but not of my mother; and she became my wife.

Dealtfel este adevărat că este sora mea, fiica tatălui meu; numai că nu -i fiica mamei mele; şi a ajuns să-mi fie nevastă.

13 W hen God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, This kindness you can show me: at every place we stop, say of me, He is my brother.

Cînd m'a scos Dumnezeu din casa tatălui meu, am zis Sarei:, Iată hatîrul pe care ai să mi -l faci: în toate locurile unde vom merge, spune despre mine că sînt fratele tău.``

14 T hen Abimelech took sheep and oxen and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham and restored to him Sarah his wife.

Abimelec a luat oi şi boi, robi şi roabe, şi le -a dat lui Avraam; şi i -a dat înapoi şi pe Sara, nevastă-sa.

15 A nd Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before you; dwell wherever it pleases you.

Abimelec a zis:,, Iată, ţara mea este înaintea ta; locuieşte unde-ţi va plăcea.``

16 A nd to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given this brother of yours a thousand pieces of silver; see, it is to compensate you and to vindicate your honor before all who are with you; before all men you are cleared and compensated.

Şi Sarei i -a zis:,, Iată, dau fratelui tău o mie de arginţi; aceasta să-ţi fie o dovadă de cinste, faţă de toţi cei ce sînt cu tine, aşa că înaintea tuturor vei fi fără vină.``

17 S o Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female slaves, and they bore children,

Avraam s'a rugat lui Dumnezeu, şi Dumnezeu a însănătoşat pe Abimelec, pe nevasta şi roabele lui, aşa că au putut să nască.

18 F or the Lord had closed fast the wombs of all in Abimelech’s household because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

Fiindcă Domnul încuiase pîntecele tuturor femeilor din casa lui Abimelec, din pricina Sarei, nevasta lui Avraam.
