1 R emember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come or the years draw near when you will say, I have no enjoyment in them—

Dar adu-ţi aminte de Făcătorul tău în zilele tinereţei tale, pînă nu vin zilele cele rele şi pînă nu se apropie anii, cînd vei zice:,, Nu găsesc nici o plăcere în ei``;

2 B efore the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain;

pînă nu se întunecă soarele, şi lumina, luna şi stelele, şi pînă nu se întorc norii îndată după ploaie;

3 I n the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look out of the windows are darkened;

pînă nu încep să tremure paznicii casei (mînile), şi să se încovoaie cele tari (picioarele); pînă nu se opresc ceice macină (dinţii), căci s'au împuţinat; pînă nu se întunecă ceice se uită pe ferestre (ochii);

4 W hen the doors are shut in the streets and the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird and the crowing of a cock, and all the daughters of music are brought low;

pînă nu se închid cele două uşi dinspre uliţă (buzele), cînd uruitul morii slăbeşte, te scoli la ciripitul unei pasări, glasul tuturor cîntăreţelor se aude înăbuşit,

5 A lso when are afraid of danger from that which is high, and fears are in the way, and the almond tree blooms, and the grasshopper is a burden, and desire and appetite fail, because man goes to his everlasting home and the mourners go about the streets or marketplaces.

te temi de orice înălţime, şi te sperii pe drum; pînă nu înfloreşte migdalul cu peri albi, şi de abea se tîrăşte lăcusta, pînă nu-ţi trec poftele, căci omul merge spre casa lui cea vecinică, şi bocitorii cutreieră uliţele;

6 b efore the silver cord is snapped apart, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern;

pînă nu se rupe funia de argint, pînă nu se sfarmă vasul de aur, pînă nu se sparge găleata la izvor, şi pînă nu se strică roata dela fîntînă;

7 T hen shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God Who gave it.

pînă nu se întoarce ţărîna în pămînt, cum a fost, şi pînă nu se întoarce duhul la Dumnezeu, care l -a dat.

8 V apor of vapors and futility of futilities, says the Preacher. All is futility (emptiness, falsity, vainglory, and transitoriness)!

O, deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor, zice Eclesiastul; totul este deşertăciune.

9 A nd furthermore, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; and he pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

Pe lîngă că Eclesiastul a fost înţelept, el a mai învăţat şi ştiinţa pe popor, a cercetat, a adîncit şi a întocmit un mare număr de zicători.

10 T he Preacher sought acceptable words, even to write down rightly words of truth or correct sentiment.

Eclesiastul a căutat să afle cuvinte plăcute, şi să scrie întocmai cuvintele adevărului.

11 T he words of the wise are like prodding goads, and firmly fixed like nails are the collected sayings which are given from one Shepherd.

Cuvintele înţelepţilor sînt ca nişte bolduri; şi, strînse la un loc, sînt ca nişte cuie bătute, date de un singur stăpîn.

12 B ut about going further, my son, be warned. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

Încolo, fiule, ia învăţătură din aceste lucruri; dacă ai voi să faci o mulţime de cărţi, să ştii că n'ai mai isprăvi, şi multă învăţătură oboseşte trupul.

13 A ll has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man and the whole for every man.

Să ascultăm dar încheierea tuturor învăţăturilor: Teme-te de Dumnezeu şi păzeşte poruncile Lui. Aceasta este datoria oricărui om.

14 F or God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good or evil.

Căci Dumnezeu va aduce orice faptă la judecată, şi judecata aceasta se va face cu privire la tot ce este ascuns, fie bine, fie rău
