1 G ive ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

(O cîntare a lui Asaf.) Ascultă, poporul meu, învăţăturile mele! Luaţi aminte la cuvintele gurii mele!

2 I will open my mouth in a parable (in instruction by numerous examples); I will utter dark sayings of old —

Îmi deschid gura şi vorbesc în pilde, vestesc înţelepciunea vremurilor străvechi.

3 W hich we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

Ce am auzit, ce ştim, ce ne-au povestit părinţii noştri,

4 W e will not hide them from their children, but we will tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, and His might, and the wonderful works that He has performed.

nu vom ascunde de copiii lor; ci vom vesti neamului de oameni care va veni laudele Domnului, puterea Lui, şi minunile pe cari le -a făcut.

5 F or He established a testimony (an express precept) in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, commanding our fathers that they should make known to their children,

El a pus o mărturie în Iacov, a dat o lege în Israel, şi a poruncit părinţilor noştri să-şi înveţe în ea copiii,

6 T hat the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be born might arise and recount them to their children,

ca să fie cunoscută de cei ce vor veni după ei, de copiii cari se vor naşte, şi cari, cînd se vor face mari, să vorbească despre ea copiilor lor;

7 T hat they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but might keep His commandments

pentruca aceştia să-şi pună încrederea în Dumnezeu, să nu uite lucrările lui Dumnezeu, şi să păzească poruncile Lui.

8 A nd might not be as their fathers—a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their hearts aright nor prepared their hearts to know God, and whose spirits were not steadfast and faithful to God.

Să nu fie, ca părinţii lor, un neam neascultător şi răzvrătit, un neam, care n'avea o inimă tare, şi al cărui duh nu era credincios lui Dumnezeu!

9 T he children of Ephraim were armed and carrying bows, yet they turned back in the day of battle.

Fiii lui Efraim, înarmaţi şi trăgînd cu arcul, au dat dosul în ziua luptei,

10 T hey kept not the covenant of God and refused to walk according to His law

pentrucă n'au ţinut legămîntul lui Dumnezeu, şi n'au voit să umble întocmai după Legea Lui.

11 A nd forgot His works and His wonders that He had shown them.

Au dat uitării lucrările Lui, minunile Lui, pe cari li le arătase.

12 M arvelous things did He in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

Înaintea părinţilor lor, El făcuse minuni în ţara Egiptului, în cîmpia Ţoan.

13 H e divided the Sea and caused them to pass through it, and He made the waters stand like a heap.

A despărţit marea, şi le -a deschis un drum prin ea, ridicînd apele ca un zid.

14 I n the daytime also He led them with a cloud and all the night with a light of fire.

I -a călăuzit ziua cu un nor, şi toată noaptea cu lumina unui foc strălucitor.

15 H e split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as out of the deep.

A despicat stînci în pustie, şi le -a dat să bea ca din nişte valuri cu ape multe.

16 H e brought streams also out of the rock and caused waters to run down like rivers.

A făcut să ţîşnească izvoare din stînci, şi să curgă ape ca nişte rîuri.

17 Y et they still went on to sin against Him by provoking and rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness (in the land of drought).

Dar ei tot n'au încetat să păcătuiască împotriva Lui, n'au încetat să se răzvrătească împotriva Celui Prea Înalt în pustie.

18 A nd they tempted God in their hearts by asking for food according to their desire and appetite.

Au ispitit pe Dumnezeu în inima lor, cerînd mîncare după poftele lor.

19 Y es, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

Au vorbit împotriva lui Dumnezeu, şi au zis:,, Oare va putea Dumnezeu să pună o masă în pustie?

20 B ehold, He did smite the rock so that waters gushed out and the streams overflowed; but can He give bread also? Can He provide flesh for His people?

Iată că El a lovit stînca, de au curs ape, şi s'au vărsat şiroaie. Dar va putea El să dea şi pîne, sau să facă rost de carne poporului Său?``

21 T herefore, when the Lord heard, He was wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob, His anger mounted up against Israel,

Domnul a auzit, şi S'a mîniat. Un foc s'a aprins împotriva lui Iacov, şi s'a stîrnit împotriva lui Israel mînia Lui,

22 B ecause in God they believed not, and they trusted not in His salvation (His power to save).

pentrucă n'au crezut în Dumnezeu, pentrucă n'au avut încredere în ajutorul Lui.

23 Y et He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven;

El a poruncit norilor de sus, şi a deschis porţile cerurilor:

24 A nd He rained down upon them manna to eat and gave them heaven’s grain.

a plouat peste ei mană de mîncare, şi le -a dat grîu din cer.

25 E veryone ate the bread of the mighty; God sent them meat in abundance.

Au mîncat cu toţii pînea celor mari, şi le -a trimes mîncare să se sature.

26 H e let forth the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by His power He guided the south wind.

A pus să sufle în ceruri vîntul de răsărit, şi a adus, prin puterea Lui, vîntul de miazăzi.

27 H e rained flesh also upon them like the dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas.

A plouat peste ei carne ca pulberea, şi păsări înaripate, cît nisipul mării;

28 A nd He let fall in the midst of their camp, round about their tents.

le -a făcut să cadă în mijlocul taberii lor, dejur împrejurul locuinţelor lor.

29 S o they ate and were well filled; He gave them what they craved and lusted after.

Ei au mîncat şi s'au săturat din destul: Dumnezeu le -a dat ce doriseră.

30 B ut scarce had they stilled their craving, and while their meat was yet in their mouths,

Dar n'apucaseră să-şi stîmpere bine pofta, mîncarea le era încă în gură,

31 T he wrath of God came upon them and slew the strongest and sturdiest of them and smote down Israel’s chosen youth.

cînd s'a stîrnit mînia lui Dumnezeu împotriva lor, a lovit de moarte pe cei mai tari din ei, şi a doborît pe tinerii lui Israel.

32 I n spite of all this, they sinned still more, for they believed not in (relied not on and adhered not to Him for) His wondrous works.

Cu toate acestea, ei n'au încetat să păcătuiască, şi n'au crezut în minunile Lui.

33 T herefore their days He consumed like a breath and their years in terror and sudden haste.

De aceea, El le -a curmat zilele ca o suflare, le -a curmat anii printr'un sfîrşit năpraznic.

34 W hen He slew them, inquired after Him diligently, and they repented and sincerely sought God.

Cînd îi lovea de moarte, ei Îl căutau, se întorceau şi se îndreptau spre Dumnezeu;

35 A nd they remembered that God was their Rock, and the Most High God their Redeemer.

îşi aduceau aminte că Dumnezeu este Stînca lor, şi că Dumnezeul Autoputernic este Izbăvitorul lor.

36 N evertheless they flattered Him with their mouths and lied to Him with their tongues.

Dar Îl înşelau cu gura, şi -L minţeau cu limba.

37 F or their hearts were not right or sincere with Him, neither were they faithful and steadfast to His covenant.

Inima nu le era tare faţă de El, şi nu erau credincioşi legămîntului Său.

38 B ut He, full of compassion, forgave their iniquity and destroyed them not; yes, many a time He turned His anger away and did not stir up all His wrath and indignation.

Totuş, în îndurarea Lui, El iartă nelegiuirea şi nu nimiceşte; Îşi opreşte de multe ori mînia şi nu dă drumul întregei Lui urgii.

39 F or He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that goes and does not return.

El Şi -a adus deci aminte că ei nu erau decît carne, o suflare care trece şi nu se mai întoarce.

40 H ow often they defied and rebelled against Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!

Decîteori s'au răzvrătit ei împotriva Lui în pustie! Decîteori L-au mîniat ei în pustietate!

41 A nd time and again they turned back and tempted God, provoking and incensing the Holy One of Israel.

Da, n'au încetat să ispitească pe Dumnezeu, şi să întărîte pe Sfîntul lui Israel.

42 T hey remembered not His hand, nor the day when He delivered them from the enemy,

Nu şi-au mai adus aminte de puterea Lui, de ziua, cînd i -a izbăvit de vrăjmaş,

43 H ow He wrought His miracles in Egypt and His wonders in the field of Zoan

de minunile, pe cari le -a făcut în Egipt, şi de semnele Lui minunate din cîmpia Ţoan.

44 A nd turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink from them.

Cum le -a prefăcut rîurile în sînge, şi n'au putut să bea din apele lor.

45 H e sent swarms of flies among them which devoured them, and frogs which destroyed them.

Cum a trimes împotriva lor nişte muşte otrăvitoare, cari i-au mîncat, şi broaşte, cari i-au nimicit.

46 H e gave also their crops to the caterpillar and their labor to the locust.

Cum le -a dat holdele pradă omizilor, rodul muncii lor pradă lăcustelor.

47 H e destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with frost and ice.

Cum le -a prăpădit viile, bătîndu-le cu piatră, şi smochinii din Egipt cu grindină.

48 H e gave them up also to the hail and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

Cum le -a lăsat vitele pradă grindinei, şi turmele pradă focului cerului.

49 H e let loose upon them the fierceness of His anger, His wrath and indignation and distress, by sending angels of calamity and woe among them.

El Şi -a aruncat împotriva lor mînia Lui aprinsă, urgia, iuţimea şi necazul: o droaie de îngeri aducători de nenorociri.

50 H e leveled and made a straight path for His anger; He did not spare from death but gave their beasts over to the pestilence and the life over to the plague.

Cum Şi -a dat drum slobod mîniei, nu le -a scăpat sufletul dela moarte, şi le -a dat viaţa pradă molimei;

51 H e smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.

cum a lovit pe toţi întîii născuţi din Egipt, pîrga puterii în corturile lui Ham.

52 B ut led His own people forth like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.

Cum a pornit pe poporul Său ca pe nişte oi, şi i -a povăţuit ca pe o turmă în pustie.

53 A nd He led them on safely and in confident trust, so that they feared not; but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

Cum i -a dus fără nici o grijă, ca să nu le fie frică, iar marea a acoperit pe vrăjmaşii lor.

54 A nd He brought them to His holy border, the border of His sanctuary, even to this mountain which His right hand had acquired.

Cum i -a adus spre hotarul Lui cel sfînt, spre muntele acesta, pe care dreapta Lui l -a cîştigat.

55 H e drove out the nations also before and allotted their land as a heritage, measured out and partitioned; and He made the tribes of Israel to dwell in the tents of those dispossessed.

Cum a izgonit neamurile dinaintea lor, le -a împărţit ţara în părţi de moştenire, şi a pus seminţiile lui Israel să locuiască în corturile lor.

56 Y et they tempted and provoked and rebelled against the Most High God and kept not His testimonies.

Dar ei au ispitit pe Dumnezeul Prea Înalt, s'au răzvrătit împotriva Lui, şi n'au ţinut poruncile Lui.

57 B ut they turned back and dealt unfaithfully and treacherously like their fathers; they were twisted like a warped and deceitful bow.

Ci s'au depărtat şi au fost necredincioşi, ca şi părinţii lor, s'au abătut la o parte, ca un arc înşelător,

58 F or they provoked Him to anger with their high places and moved Him to jealousy with their graven images.

L-au supărat prin înălţimile lor, şi I-au stîrnit gelozia cu idolii lor.

59 W hen God heard this, He was full of wrath; and He utterly rejected Israel, greatly abhorring and loathing,

Dumnezeu a auzit, şi Ş'a mîniat, şi a urgisit rău de tot pe Israel.

60 S o that He forsook the tabernacle at Shiloh, the tent in which He had dwelt among men,

A părăsit locuinţa Lui din Silo, cortul în care locuia între oameni.

61 A nd delivered His strength and power (the ark of the covenant) into captivity, and His glory into the hands of the foe (the Philistines).

Şi -a dat slava pradă robiei, şi măreţia Lui în mînile vrăjmaşului.

62 H e gave His people over also to the sword and was wroth with His heritage.

A dat pradă săbiei pe poporul Lui, şi S'a mîniat pe moştenirea Lui.

63 T he fire devoured their young men, and their bereaved virgins were not praised in a wedding song.

Pe tinerii lui i -a ars focul, şi fecioarele lui n'au mai fost sărbătorite cu cîntări de nuntă.

64 T heir priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.

Preoţii săi au căzut ucişi de sabie, şi văduvele lui nu s'au bocit.

65 T hen the Lord awakened as from sleep, as a strong man whose consciousness of power is heightened by wine.

Atunci Domnul S'a trezit, ca unul care a dormit, ca un viteaz îmbărbătat de vin,

66 A nd He smote His adversaries in the back; He put them to lasting shame and reproach.

şi a lovit pe protivnicii Lui, cari fugeau, acoperindu -i cu vecinică ocară.

67 M oreover, He rejected the tent of Joseph and chose not the tribe of Ephraim.

Însă a lepădat cortul lui Iosif, şi n'a ales seminţia lui Efraim;

68 B ut He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.

ci a ales seminţia lui Iuda, muntele Sionului, pe care -l iubeşte.

69 A nd He built His sanctuary like the heights and like the earth which He established forever.

Şi -a zidit sfîntul locaş ca cerurile de înalt, şi tare ca pămîntul, pe care l -a întemeiat pe veci.

70 H e chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds;

A ales pe robul Său David, şi l -a luat dela staulele de oi.

71 F rom tending the ewes that had their young He brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob His people, of Israel His inheritance.

L -a luat dindărătul oilor, cari alăptau, ca să pască pe poporul Său Iacov, şi pe moştenirea Sa Israel.

72 S o was their shepherd with an upright heart; he guided them by the discernment and skillfulness his hands.

Şi David i -a cîrmuit cu o inimă neprihănită, şi i -a povăţuit cu mîni pricepute.
