1 T he proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 T hat people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

Para entender sabiduría y doctrina, y conocer razones prudentes.

3 R eceive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

Para recibir prudentes consejos, y justicia, juicio y equidad.

4 T hat prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

Para dar sagacidad a los incautos, e inteligencia y cordura a los jóvenes.

5 T he wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

Que lo oiga el sabio, y aumente su saber, y que el entendido reciba consejo

6 T hat people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

para entender proverbios y enigmas, y palabras sabias y profundas.

7 T he reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

El principio de la sabiduría es el temor al Señor; Los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la enseñanza. Amonestaciones de la Sabiduría

8 M y son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

Atiende, hijo mío, las correcciones de tu padre, y no menosprecies las enseñanzas de tu madre;

9 F or they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

Adorno de gracia serán sobre tu cabeza, y collares alrededor de tu cuello.

10 M y son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Hijo mío, si los pecadores quisieran engañarte, no te dejes llevar por ellos.

11 I f they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

Tal vez te digan: «¡Ven con nosotros! Estemos al acecho para derramar sangre. Acechemos sin motivo a los incautos.

12 L et us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

Seamos como el sepulcro, como el abismo, y traguémonos viva y entera a la gente.

13 W e shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

Hallaremos toda clase de riquezas y llenaremos con despojos nuestras casas.

14 T hrow in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

Comparte tu destino con nosotros, y compartiremos todos una misma bolsa.»

15 M y son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

Pero, hijo mío, no vayas por su camino; ¡aleja tus pasos de sus veredas!

16 F or their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

Sus pies corren hacia el mal, ¡se apresuran a derramar sangre!

17 F or in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

No tiene caso tender una trampa a la vista de todas las aves;

18 B ut they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

pero ellos atentan contra su propia vida; ¡ellos mismos se tienden la trampa!

19 S o are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

Así son las sendas de la gente ambiciosa: ¡su propia ambición les quita la vida!

20 W isdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

La sabiduría clama en las calles, y deja oír su voz por las plazas.

21 S he cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

Clama en los principales puntos de encuentro; a la entrada de la ciudad expone sus razones:

22 H ow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

«Ustedes, muchachos inexpertos y burlones, ¿hasta cuándo seguirán amando la simpleza? ¿Hasta cuándo seguirán burlándose de todo? ¿Hasta cuando aborrecerán el conocimiento?

23 I f you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

¡Presten atención a mis reprensiones! Yo derramaré mi espíritu sobre ustedes, y les daré a conocer mis argumentos.

24 B ecause I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

»Pero yo los llamé, y nadie quiso oírme; les tendí la mano, y nadie me hizo caso;

25 A nd you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

Al contrario, desecharon todos mis consejos y no quisieron recibir mi reprensión.

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

Por eso, yo me burlaré de ustedes cuando les sobrevenga la temida calamidad,

27 W hen your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

cuando la calamidad que tanto temen les sobrevenga como un torbellino; ¡cuando les sobrevengan tribulaciones y angustias.

28 T hen will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

Entonces me llamarán, y no les responderé; me buscarán de mañana, y no me hallarán.

29 B ecause they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

Puesto que aborrecen la sabiduría, y no optaron por temer al Señor

30 W ould accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

ni quisieron seguir mis consejos, sino que menospreciaron todas mis reprensiones,

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

comerán los frutos de sus andanzas y se hartarán con sus propios consejos.

32 F or the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

Los incautos mueren por sus propios desvíos; a los necios los destruye su autosuficiencia.

33 B ut whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

Pero los que me oyen vivirán tranquilos, sin sobresaltos ni temor de ningún mal.»
