1 I t was told Joab, Behold, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.

Joab se enteró de que el rey lloraba la muerte de Absalón y le guardaba luto,

2 S o the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for they heard it said, The king grieves for his son.

y de que la victoria de ese día se había convertido en día de luto para el pueblo, pues todos sabían que el rey sufría mucho por la muerte de su hijo.

3 T he people slipped into the city stealthily that day as humiliated people steal away when they flee in battle.

También se enteró de que el ejército que regresaba entró a la ciudad en completo silencio y a escondidas, como los que avergonzados huyen de la batalla,

4 B ut the king covered his face and cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

mientras el rey se cubría el rostro y clamaba: «¡Hijo mío Absalón! ¡Hijo mío, hijo mío!»

5 A nd Joab came into the house to the king and said, You have today covered the faces of all your servants with shame, who this day have saved your life and the lives of your sons and your daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines.

Entonces Joab se dirigió al palacio, y le dijo al rey: «Hoy has cubierto de vergüenza a todos tus siervos, los cuales han luchado por salvarte la vida, y la vida de tus hijos y de tus hijas, y la de tus mujeres y concubinas.

6 F or you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have declared today that princes and servants are nothing to you; for today I see that if Absalom had lived and all the rest of us had died, you would be well pleased.

Con tus lamentos nos demuestras que amas a los que te aborrecen, y aborreces a los que te aman. Con tus lamentos nos das a entender que ninguno de nosotros te importa nada, y que si Absalón estuviera vivo y nosotros muertos, tú estarías feliz.

7 S o now arise, go out and speak kindly and encouragingly to your servants; for I swear by the Lord that if you do not go, not a man will remain with you this night. And this will be worse for you than all the evil that has befallen you from your youth until now.

Levántate ahora mismo y ve a hablar con los hombres que te han sido fieles. Agradéceles su esfuerzo. Te juro que, si no lo haces, esta misma noche no quedará un solo hombre que te apoye. ¡Y eso será peor que todos los males que te hayan ocurrido desde tu juventud hasta la fecha.»

8 T hen the king arose and sat in the gate. And all were told, The king is sitting in the gate, and they all came before the king. Now Israel had fled, every man to his home.

El rey se levantó y fue hasta la puerta. Y cuando su ejército supo que el rey estaba sentado a las puertas de la ciudad, todos fueron a ponerse a sus órdenes. Mientras tanto, los israelitas habían huido, cada uno a su casa.

9 A nd all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king delivered us from the hands of our enemies, and he saved us from the hands of the Philistines. And now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.

Entre las tribus de Israel se suscitó una gran disputa, pues decían: «El rey que luchó contra nuestros enemigos, y que nos libró de los filisteos, ahora ha huido del país por miedo a Absalón.

10 A nd Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. So now, why do you say nothing about bringing back the king?

Y Absalón, a quien habíamos consagrado como rey, ha muerto en la batalla. ¿Por qué no se pronuncian en favor de que el rey David regrese?»

11 A nd King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Say to the elders of Judah, Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house, when the word of all Israel has come to the king, to bring him to his house?

El rey David, por su parte, mandó a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar a que preguntaran a los ancianos de Judá: «Todo Israel está pidiendo que el rey David vuelva. ¿Qué esperan ustedes para hacerlo volver? ¿Por qué tienen que ser los últimos?

12 Y ou are my kinsmen; you are my bone and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?

Ustedes son sus hermanos. ¡Por sus venas corre la misma sangre! ¿Por qué retrasan su decisión para hacer que el rey vuelva?»

13 A nd say to Amasa, Are you not of my bone and of my flesh? May God do so to me, and more also, if you are not commander of my army hereafter in place of Joab.

También les ordenó que le dijeran a Amasa: «Tú y yo somos de la misma sangre. Que el Señor me castigue, y más todavía, si a partir de este momento no te nombro general de mi ejército en lugar de Joab.»

14 H e inclined the hearts of all the men of Judah as one man, so they sent word to, Return, you and all your servants.

Con esto, David se ganó la voluntad de todos los hombres de Judá, y como un solo hombre le mandaron un mensaje invitándolo a volver, junto con todos sus seguidores.

15 S o returned and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king, to conduct him over the Jordan.

Así el rey regresó, y llegó hasta el Jordán. Entonces los de Judá fueron a Gilgal para recibirlo y ayudarlo a cruzar el río.

16 A nd Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, hastily came down with the men of Judah to meet King David,

Con ellos fue Simey hijo de Gera, de la familia de Benjamín que vivía en Bajurín, el cual se dio prisa para alcanzar a los hombres de Judá que iban a recibir al rey David.

17 A nd 1, 000 men of Benjamin with him. And Ziba, the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants with him, rushed to the Jordan and pressed quickly into the king’s presence.

Simey iba acompañado de mil benjaminitas, y también lo acompañaba Sibá, que con sus quince hijos y sus veinte sirvientes había estado al servicio de Saúl. Todos ellos precedieron al rey para cruzar el Jordán.

18 A nd there went over a ferryboat to bring over the king’s household and to do what he thought good. And Shimei son of Gera fell down before the king as David came to the Jordan,

Ayudaron a la familia del rey a cruzar el vado, y se pusieron a su disposición. Una vez que el rey cruzó el Jordán, Simey fue y se arrodilló delante de él

19 A nd said to the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity to me and hold me guilty, nor remember what your servant did the day my lord went out of Jerusalem; may the king not take it to heart.

y le dijo: «Ruego a Su Majestad no tomar en cuenta el mal proceder de este siervo suyo, ni acordarse de mi maldad cuando Su Majestad salía de Jerusalén. Por favor, ¡no me guarde rencor!

20 F or your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am today the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.

Reconozco mi pecado, y por eso he sido el primero de toda la familia de José en salir a recibir a mi señor el rey.»

21 B ut Abishai son of Zeruiah said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?

Abisay hijo de Seruyá objetó: «¡Simey merece la muerte, pues maldijo al ungido del Señor!»

22 D avid said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be an adversary to me today? Shall anyone be put to death today in Israel? For do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

Pero David dijo: «¿Qué mal les he hecho, hijos de Seruyá, para que hoy se pongan en contra mía? ¿Acaso alguien tiene qué morir hoy en Israel, y yo, que soy el rey, no lo sé?»

23 T herefore the king said to Shimei, You shall not die. And the king gave him his oath.

Y a Simey Le dijo: «Te juro que no vas a morir.»

24 M ephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had not dressed his feet, trimmed his beard, or washed his clothes from the day the king left until he returned in peace and safety.

También salió a recibirlo Mefiboset hijo de Saúl, quien desde el día en que el rey salió de Jerusalén y hasta que el rey regresó en paz no se había lavado los pies, ni se había cortado la barba, ni había lavado su ropa.

25 A nd when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king, David said to him, Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?

Y cuando Mefiboset fue a Jerusalén para recibir al rey, éste le preguntó: «Mefiboset, ¿por qué no te fuiste conmigo?»

26 H e said, My lord O king, my servant deceived me; for I said, Saddle me the donkey that I may ride on it and go to the king, for your servant is lame.

Y Mefiboset le respondió: «Su Majestad, ¡mi criado me engañó! Como soy cojo, yo le había ordenado que me aparejara un asno, pues había decidido acompañarte.

27 H e has slandered your servant to my lord the king. But the king is as an angel of God; so do what is good in your eyes.

Creo que mi sirviente te ha hablado mal de mí, pero acepto que hagas conmigo lo que bien te parezca, pues para mí tú eres un ángel de Dios.

28 F or all of my father’s house were but doomed to death before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I to cry any more to the king?

Comprendo que, a los ojos de Su Majestad, todos los descendientes de mi padre merecían la muerte; sin embargo, tú me permitiste comer a tu mesa. ¿Con qué derecho puedo reclamarle algo a Su Majestad?»

29 T he king said to him, Why speak any more of your affairs? I say, You and Ziba divide the land.

Entonces el rey dijo: «¿Para qué seguir hablando? Yo he decidido que tú y Sibá se dividan las tierras.»

30 M ephibosheth said to the king, Oh, let him take it all, since my lord the king has returned home in safety and peace.

Pero Mefiboset replicó: «Por mí, él se puede quedar con todo. A mí me basta con que Su Majestad haya vuelto a su palacio en paz.»

31 N ow Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim and went on to the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan.

También Barzilay el galaadita fue desde Roguelín hasta el Jordán, y lo atravesó para encontrarse con el rey y acompañarlo al otro lado del río.

32 N ow Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old; and he had provided the king with food while he remained at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.

Barzilay era ya muy anciano, pues tenía ochenta años, y cuando el rey estuvo en Majanayin él le había dado provisiones, pues era muy rico.

33 A nd the king said to Barzillai, Come over with me, and I will provide for you with me in Jerusalem.

Entonces el rey le dijo a Barzilay: «Ven conmigo a Jerusalén, y yo te daré todo lo que te haga falta.»

34 A nd Barzillai said to the king, How much longer have I to live, that it would be worthwhile for me to go up with the king to Jerusalem?

Pero Barzilay le respondió: «¿Cuántos años crees que podré vivir contigo en Jerusalén?

35 I am this day eighty years old. Could I now discern between good and evil? Can your servant appreciate what I eat or drink? Can I any longer enjoy the voices of singing men and women? Why then should your servant be still a burden to my lord the king?

Ya tengo ochenta años de edad. ¿Crees que sabré distinguir entre lo que es agradable y lo que no lo es? ¿Crees que podré apreciar la comida o la bebida? ¿Crees que podré escuchar mejor a tus cantores y cantoras? No quiero ser una carga para mi señor, el rey.

36 Y our servant will only go over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?

Sólo te acompañaré un poco más allá del Jordán. ¿Por qué tendrías que darme una mayor recompensa?

37 L et your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city and be buried by the grave of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king. And do to him what shall seem good to you.

Te ruego que me permitas regresar a mi ciudad para morir allá, junto al sepulcro de mis padres. Pero aquí está tu siervo Quimán. Permítele acompañarte, y trátalo como mejor te parezca.»

38 T he king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him what seems good to you; and whatever you ask of me I will do for you.

El rey aceptó, y dijo: «Que venga conmigo. Lo voy a tratar como si fueras tú mismo, y haré con él todo lo que me pidas que haga.»

39 S o all the people went over the Jordan. When the king had crossed over, he kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and returned to his own place.

Entonces todo el pueblo cruzó el Jordán, y en cuanto el rey lo cruzó, besó a Barzilay y lo bendijo, y éste regresó a su ciudad.

40 T hen the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went with him; and all the people of Judah and also half the people of Israel escorted the king.

El rey se dirigió a Gilgal, acompañado de Quimán y de todos los de Judá, y de la mitad del pueblo de Israel.

41 A nd all the men of Israel came to the king and said to him, Why have our kinsmen, the men of Judah, stolen you away and have brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?

Pero después los israelitas fueron a ver al rey, y le preguntaron: «¿Por qué permitiste que nuestros hermanos de Judá te acompañaran para cruzar el Jordán contigo, junto con tu familia y con todo tu ejército?»

42 B ut all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us. Why then be angry about it? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense? Or has he given us any gift?

Y los jefes de Judá les respondieron: «Lo hicimos porque el rey también es pariente nuestro. Pero, ¿por qué se enojan? ¿Acaso piensan que lo hicimos porque el rey nos dio de comer? ¿Creen que recibimos algún regalo por acompañarlo?»

43 T hen the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, We have ten shares in the king; and we have more right to David than you have. Why then did you despise and ignore us? Were we not the first to speak of our bringing back our king? But the words of the men of Judah were more violent than the charges of the men of Israel.

Y los israelitas dijeron: «Nosotros tenemos diez veces más derecho que ustedes para que David sea nuestro rey. ¿Por qué nos han menospreciado? Recuerden que nosotros fuimos los primeros en decidir que él regresara.» Pero los argumentos de los hombres de Judá tuvieron más fuerza que los de los israelitas.
