1 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of His wrath.

Yo soy aquel que ha visto la aflicción bajo el látigo de su enojo.

2 H e has led me and brought me into darkness and not light.

Me ha llevado por un sendero no de luz sino de tinieblas.

3 S urely He has turned away from me; His hand is against me all the day.

A todas horas vuelve y revuelve su mano contra mí.

4 M y flesh and my skin has He worn out and made old; He has shattered my bones.

Ha hecho envejecer mi carne y mi piel; me ha despedazado los huesos.

5 H e has built up against me and surrounded me with bitterness, tribulation, and anguish.

Ha levantado en torno mío un muro de amargura y de trabajo.

6 H e has caused me to dwell in dark places like those long dead.

Me ha dejado en las tinieblas, como a los que murieron hace tiempo.

7 H e walled me in so that I cannot get out; He has weighted down my chain.

Por todos lados me asedia y no puedo escapar; ¡muy pesadas son mis cadenas!

8 E ven when I cry and shout for help, He shuts out my prayer.

Grito pidiéndole ayuda, pero él no atiende mi oración.

9 H e has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked.

Ha cercado con piedras mis caminos; me ha cerrado el paso.

10 H e is to me like a bear lying in wait, and like a lion in secret places.

Como un oso en acecho, como león agazapado,

11 H e has turned me off my ways and pulled me in pieces; He has made me desolate.

me desgarró por completo y me obligó a cambiar de rumbo.

12 H e has bent His bow and set me as a mark for the arrow.

Tensó su arco y me puso como blanco de sus flechas.

13 H e has caused the arrows of His quiver to enter into my heart.

Me clavó en las entrañas las saetas de su aljaba.

14 I have become a derision to all my people, and their singsong all the day.

Todo el tiempo soy para mi pueblo motivo de burla.

15 H e has filled me with bitterness; He has made me drink to excess and until drunken with wormwood.

¡Me ha llenado de amargura! ¡Me ha embriagado de ajenjo!

16 H e has also broken my teeth with gravel (stones); He has covered me with ashes.

Me ha roto los dientes, me ha cubierto de ceniza;

17 A nd You have bereaved my soul and cast it off far from peace; I have forgotten what good and happiness are.

Ya no sé lo que es tener paz ni lo que es disfrutar del bien,

18 A nd I say, Perished is my strength and my expectation from the Lord.

y concluyo: «Fuerzas ya no tengo, ni esperanza en el Señor.»

19 r emember my affliction and my misery, my wandering and my outcast state, the wormwood and the gall.

Tan amargo como la hiel es pensar en mi aflicción y mi tristeza,

20 M y soul has them continually in remembrance and is bowed down within me.

y lo traigo a la memoria porque mi alma está del todo abatida;

21 B ut this I recall and therefore have I hope and expectation:

pero en mi corazón recapacito, y eso me devuelve la esperanza.

22 I t is because of the Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.

Por la misericordia del Señor no hemos sido consumidos; ¡nunca su misericordia se ha agotado!

23 T hey are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness.

¡Grande es su fidelidad, y cada mañana se renueva!

24 T he Lord is my portion or share, says my living being (my inner self); therefore will I hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.

Por eso digo con toda el alma: «¡El Señor es mi herencia, y en él confío!»

25 T he Lord is good to those who wait hopefully and expectantly for Him, to those who seek Him.

Es bueno el Señor con quienes le buscan, con quienes en él esperan.

26 I t is good that one should hope in and wait quietly for the salvation (the safety and ease) of the Lord.

Es bueno esperar en silencio que el Señor venga a salvarnos.

27 I t is good for a man that he should bear the yoke in his youth.

Es bueno que llevemos el yugo desde nuestra juventud.

28 L et him sit alone uncomplaining and keeping silent, because has laid upon him.

Dios nos lo ha impuesto. Así que callemos y confiemos.

29 L et him put his mouth in the dust —there may yet be hope.

Hundamos la cara en el polvo. Tal vez aún haya esperanza.

30 L et him give his cheek to the One Who smites him; let him be filled with reproach.

Demos la otra mejilla a quien nos hiera. ¡Cubrámonos de afrentas!

31 F or the Lord will not cast off forever!

El Señor no nos abandonará para siempre;

32 B ut though He causes grief, yet will He be moved to compassion according to the multitude of His loving-kindness and tender mercy.

nos aflige, pero en su gran bondad también nos compadece.

33 F or He does not willingly and from His heart afflict or grieve the children of men.

No es la voluntad del Señor afligirnos ni entristecernos.

34 T o trample and crush underfoot all the prisoners of the earth,

Hay quienes oprimen a todos los encarcelados de la tierra,

35 T o turn aside and deprive a man of his rights before the face of the Most High or a superior,

y tuercen los derechos humanos en presencia del Altísimo,

36 T o subvert a man in his cause— the Lord does not approve.

y aun trastornan las causas que defienden. Pero el Señor no lo aprueba.

37 W ho is he who speaks and it comes to pass, if the Lord has not authorized and commanded it?

¿Quién puede decir que algo sucede sin que el Señor lo ordene?

38 I s it not out of the mouth of the Most High that evil and good both proceed ?

¿Acaso lo malo y lo bueno no proviene de la boca del Altísimo?

39 W hy does a living man sigh ? a man complain for the punishment of his sins?

¿Cómo podemos quejarnos, si sufrimos por nuestros pecados?

40 L et us test and examine our ways, and let us return to the Lord!

Examinemos nuestra conducta; busquemos al Señor y volvámonos a él.

41 L et us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven:

Elevemos al Dios de los cielos nuestras manos y nuestros corazones.

42 W e have transgressed and rebelled and You have not pardoned.

Hemos sido rebeldes y desleales, y tú no nos perdonaste.

43 Y ou have covered Yourself with wrath and pursued and afflicted us; You have slain without pity.

Lleno de ira, no nos perdonaste; ¡nos perseguiste y nos mataste!

44 Y ou have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through.

Te envolviste en una nube para no escuchar nuestros ruegos.

45 Y ou have made us offscouring and refuse among the nations.

Entre los paganos hiciste de nosotros motivo de vergüenza y de rechazo.

46 A ll our enemies have gaped at us and railed against us.

Todos nuestros enemigos nos tuercen la boca;

47 F ear and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction.

son para nosotros una trampa, ¡son motivo de temor, destrucción y quebranto!

48 M y eyes overflow with streams of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

¡Los ojos se me llenan de llanto al ver el desastre de mi ciudad amada!

49 M y eyes overflow continually and will not cease

Mis ojos no dejan de llorar, pues ya no hay remedio,

50 U ntil the Lord looks down and sees from heaven.

a menos que desde los cielos el Señor se digne mirarnos.

51 M y eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the maidens of my city.

Me llena de tristeza ver el sufrimiento de las mujeres de mi ciudad.

52 I have been hunted down like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause.

Mis enemigos me acosaron sin motivo, como si persiguieran a un ave;

53 T hey destroyed my life in the dungeon (pit) and cast a stone above me.

me ataron y me arrojaron en un pozo, y sobre mí pusieron una piedra;

54 T he waters ran down on my head; I said, I am gone.

las aguas me llegaron hasta el cuello, y llegué a darme por muerto.

55 I called upon Your name, O Lord, out of the depths of the dungeon.

Desde el fondo de la cárcel invoqué, Señor, tu nombre,

56 Y ou heard my voice: hide not Your ear at my prayer for relief.

y tú oíste mi voz; no cerraste tus oídos al clamor de mis suspiros;

57 Y ou drew near on the day I called to You; You said, Fear not.

el día que te invoqué, viniste a mí y me dijiste: «No tengas miedo.»

58 O Lord, You have pleaded the causes of my soul; You have rescued and redeemed my life!

Tú, Señor, me defendiste; me salvaste la vida.

59 O Lord, You have seen my wrong; judge and maintain my cause.

Tú, Señor, viste mi agravio y viniste en mi defensa;

60 Y ou have seen all their vengeance, all their devices against me.

te diste cuenta de que ellos sólo pensaban en vengarse de mí.

61 Y ou have heard their reproach and revilings, O Lord, and all their devices against me—

Tú, Señor, sabes cómo me ofenden, cómo hacen planes contra mí;

62 T he lips and thoughts of my assailants are against me all day long.

sabes que mis enemigos a todas horas piensan hacerme daño;

63 L ook at their sitting down and their rising up; I am their singsong.

¡en todo lo que hacen soy el tema de sus burlas!

64 R ender to them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.

¡Dales, Señor, el pago que merecen sus acciones!

65 Y ou will give them hardness and blindness of heart; Your curse will be upon them.

¡Déjalos en manos de su obstinación! ¡Que tu maldición caiga sobre ellos!

66 Y ou will pursue and afflict them in anger and destroy them from under Your heavens, O Lord.

En tu furor, Señor, ¡persíguelos! ¡Haz que desaparezcan de este mundo!
