1 H ear this, all you peoples; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,

Escuchen esto, pueblos todos; escuchen esto, habitantes del mundo entero;

2 B oth low and high, rich and poor together:

lo mismo los nobles que los plebeyos, lo mismo los pobres que los ricos.

3 M y mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

De mis labios brotará sabiduría; de mi corazón, sagaces reflexiones.

4 I will submit and consent to a parable or proverb; to the music of a lyre I will unfold my riddle (my problem).

Inclinaré mi oído a los proverbios y al son del arpa explicaré su sentido.

5 W hy should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of those who would supplant me surrounds me on every side,

¿Por qué habré de temer en los días aciagos, cuando la maldad de mis opresores me rodea,

6 E ven of those who trust in and lean on their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

cuando los que confían en sus riquezas se jactan de sus muchas posesiones?

7 N one of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—

¡Ninguno de ellos puede salvar a su hermano, ni dar nada a Dios a cambio de su vida!

8 F or the ransom of a life is too costly, and can never suffice—

El rescate de una vida tiene un alto precio, y ningún dinero será jamás suficiente

9 S o that he should live on forever and never see the pit (the grave) and corruption.

para que siga con vida para siempre y nunca llegue a experimentar la muerte.

10 F or he sees that even wise men die; the fool and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

Es evidente que hasta los sabios mueren; que los necios e insensatos perecen por igual, y que a otros les dejan sus riquezas.

11 T heir inward thought is that their houses will continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands their own and after their own names.

Algunos piensan que sus casas serán eternas, y que las habitarán por todas las generaciones, y hasta dan su nombre a las tierras que poseen.

12 B ut man, with all his honor and pomp, does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.

Aunque ricos, los mortales no permanecen; lo mismo que las bestias, un día perecen.

13 T his is the fate of those who are foolishly confident, yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah!

Este camino suyo es una locura, pero sus hijos se complacen en sus dichos,

14 L ike sheep they are appointed for Sheol (the place of the dead); death shall be their shepherd. And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form and beauty shall be consumed, for Sheol shall be their dwelling.

mientras la muerte los lleva al sepulcro como un pastor que guía a sus rebaños; será el sepulcro su última morada. Allí desaparecerá su buen semblante, y un día los hombres justos serán sus amos.

15 B ut God will redeem me from the power of Sheol (the place of the dead); for He will receive me. Selah!

Pero a mí, Dios me rescatará; ¡Dios me librará del poder del sepulcro!

16 B e not afraid when one is made rich, when the wealth and glory of his house are increased;

Tú, no te preocupes cuando veas que otros se hacen ricos y agrandan sus casas,

17 F or when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not descend after him.

pues nada se llevarán cuando mueran; sus riquezas no se las llevarán al sepulcro.

18 T hough while he lives he counts himself happy and prosperous, and though a man gets praise when he does well,

Aunque se sientan felices mientras vivan, y la gente los alabe cuando prosperen,

19 H e will go to the generation of his fathers, who will nevermore see the light.

un día irán a reunirse con sus antepasados y nunca más volverán a ver la luz.

20 A man who is held in honor and understands not is like the beasts that perish.

Aunque ricos, los mortales no entienden; lo mismo que las bestias, un día perecen.
