1 D o you know the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth ? do you observe when the hinds are giving birth?

Para que nazcan, la cierva se encorva, y en cuando nace su cría se calma su dolor.

4 T heir young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field; they go forth and return not to them.

Y los cervatos crecen, y se hacen fuertes, y se apartan de la madre para nunca volver.

5 W ho has sent out the wild donkey, giving him his freedom? Or who has loosed the bands of the swift donkey,

»¿Quién ha criado libre al asno montés? ¿Quién lo liberó de sus ataduras?

6 W hose home I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling place?

Fui yo quien lo hizo habitar en la soledad, quien le dio el páramo por hábitat.

7 H e scorns the tumult of the city and hears not the shoutings of the taskmaster.

La ciudad y sus tumultos le resultan divertidos; no sabe obedecer los gritos de los arrieros.

8 T he range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.

Busca pastos en los altos montes, y hace de toda hierba su alimento.

9 W ill the wild ox be willing to serve you, or remain beside your manger?

»¿Y acaso el búfalo querrá servirte? ¿Se quedará tranquilo en tu pesebre?

10 C an you bind the wild ox with a harness to the plow in the furrow? Or will he harrow the furrows for you?

¿Podrás ponerle un yugo para trabajar la tierra? ¿Hará surcos en el valle porque se lo mandas tú?

11 W ill you trust him because his strength is great, or to him will you leave your labor?

¿Podrás confiar en su gran fuerza? ¿Crees que puedes confiarle tus labores?

12 W ill you depend upon him to bring home your seed and gather the grain of your threshing floor?

¿Podrás encargarle que recoja tu semilla, y que la amontone en tu granero?

13 T he wings of the ostrich wave proudly, are they the pinions and plumage of love?

»El avestruz agita su bello plumaje, que no es tan bello como el del pavo real.

14 T he ostrich leaves her eggs on the ground and warms them in the dust,

Pone huevos, y luego los abandona, y los deja calentar bajo el polvo de la tierra.

15 F orgetting that a foot may crush them or that the wild beast may trample them.

No le importa que alguien los aplaste, ni que las bestias del campo los destrocen.

16 S he is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers; her labor is in vain because she has no sense of danger,

Es cruel con sus polluelos, como si no fueran suyos, no piensa que su trabajo pudo haber sido en vano.

17 F or God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has He imparted to her understanding.

Y es que yo no lo doté de sabiduría; tampoco lo doté de gran inteligencia,

18 Y et when she lifts herself up in flight, she can laugh to scorn the horse and his rider.

¡pero en cuanto emprende la carrera se burla del caballo y de su jinete!

19 H ave you given the horse his might? Have you clothed his neck with quivering and a shaking mane?

»¿Acaso tú dotaste al caballo de su fuerza? ¿Cubriste acaso su cuello de ondulantes crines?

20 W as it you who made him to leap like a locust? The majesty of his nostrils is terrible.

¿Puedes asustarlo, como si fuera una langosta? ¡Si un resoplido suyo asusta a cualquiera!

21 H e paws in the valley and exults in his strength; he goes out to meet the weapons.

Tan fuerte es que escarba el suelo con sus cascos, y así se apresta a entrar en combate.

22 H e mocks at fear and is not dismayed or terrified; neither does he turn back from the sword.

Nada le espanta, a nada le teme, ni se arredra ante la espada.

23 T he quiver rattles upon him, as do the glittering spear and the lance.

Suenan a su lado las flechas en la aljaba, brillan las lanzas, chocan las jabalinas,

24 d evour the ground with fierceness and rage; neither can he stand still at the sound of the trumpet.

pero él, impetuoso, escarba la tierra, sin que le asusten los toques de trompeta.

25 A s often as the trumpet sounds he says, Ha, ha! And he smells the battle from afar, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

Más bien, el sonido del clarín lo excita, y a la distancia percibe los olores del combate, el griterío y las órdenes de ataque.

26 I s it by your wisdom that the hawk soars and stretches her wings toward the south ?

»¿Acaso por órdenes tuyas vuela el gavilán, y tiende el vuelo para dirigirse al sur?

27 D oes the eagle mount up at your command and make his nest on high ?

¿Acaso por mandato tuyo se remonta el águila, y pone su nido en lo alto de las rocas?

28 O n the cliff he dwells and remains securely, upon the point of the rock and the stronghold.

Su nido se halla en los altos montes, en la punto de los más altos peñascos.

29 F rom there he spies out the prey; and his eyes see it afar off.

Con sus dos potentes ojos, desde lejos acecha a su presa,

30 H is young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is he.

y alimenta a sus polluelos con la sangre de su presa. “Donde hay un cadáver, hay un águila.”»
