1 A nd in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

El día primero del mes tercero del año undécimo, la palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo:

2 S on of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: Whom are you like in your greatness?

«Hijo de hombre, dile al faraón, rey de Egipto, y a su pueblo: ¿A quién te puedes comparar en arrogancia?

3 B ehold, Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches and with forestlike shade and of high stature, with its top among the thick boughs.

Fíjate que Asiria era como un cedro del Líbano, con hermosas ramas, frondoso ramaje e impresionante altura. ¡Su copa se alzaba sobre un espeso ramaje!

4 T he waters nourished it; the deep made it grow tall; its rivers ran round about its planting, sending out its streams to all the trees of the forest.

Las aguas lo hicieron crecer, el abismo lo encumbró; sus ríos corrían alrededor de su tronco, y compartía sus corrientes con todos los árboles del bosque.

5 T herefore it towered higher than all the trees of the forest; its boughs were multiplied and its branches became long, because there was much water when they were shot forth.

Fue así como llegó a ser más alto que todos los árboles del bosque; sus ramas se multiplicaron y, gracias a la abundancia de agua, el ramaje que había echado se extendió.

6 A ll the birds of the heavens made their nests in its boughs, and under its branches all the wild beasts of the field brought forth their young and under its shadow dwelt all of the great nations.

En sus ramas anidaban todas las aves del cielo, y bajo su sombra parían todas las bestias del campo. ¡Muchas naciones se acogían a su sombra!

7 T hus was it beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches, for its root was by many and great waters.

Con sus ramas extendidas llegó a ser muy grande y hermoso, porque estaba plantado junto a muchas aguas.

8 T he cedars in the garden of God could not hide or rival it; the cypress trees did not have boughs like it and the plane trees did not have branches like it, nor was any tree in the garden of God like it in its beauty.

No había en el huerto de Dios cedro que lo cubriera; las ramas de las hayas no eran comparables a las suyas, ni el ramaje de los castaños se le podía comparar. ¡Ningún árbol del huerto de Dios era semejante a él en hermosura!

9 I made it beautiful with the multitude of its branches, so that all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God envied it.

Con su tupido ramaje yo lo embellecí; todos los árboles que estaban en Edén, en el huerto de Dios, lo envidiaban.»

10 T herefore thus said the Lord God: Because it is exalted in stature and has set its top among the thick boughs and the clouds, and its heart is proud of its height,

Por lo tanto, así ha dicho Dios el Señor: «Puesto que su corazón se ha enaltecido por causa de la altura que ha alcanzado, y por haberse levantado por encima de las ramas más altas,

11 I will even deliver it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations; he shall surely deal with it. I have driven it out for its wickedness and lawlessness.

yo lo he desechado y voy a entregarlo en manos de un pueblo poderoso, que lo tratará según su maldad.

12 A nd strangers, the most terrible of the nations, will cut it off and leave it; upon the mountains and in all the valleys its branches will fall and its boughs will lie broken by all the watercourses of the land, and all the peoples of the earth will go down out of its shade and leave it.

Naciones extrañas y poderosas lo destruirán y lo derribarán; sus ramas caerán por todos los montes y los valles; su ramaje quedará resquebrajado por todos los arroyos de la tierra, y todos los pueblos de la tierra se alejarán de su sombra y lo abandonarán.

13 U pon its ruins all the birds of the heavens will dwell, and all the wild beasts of the field will be upon branches.

Sobre sus ruinas harán su habitación todas las aves del cielo, y sobre sus ramas se echarán todas las bestias del campo,

14 A ll this is so that none of the trees by the waters may exalt themselves because of their height or shoot up their top among the thick boughs and the clouds, and that none of their mighty ones should stand upon themselves for their height, all that drink water. For they are all delivered over to death, to the lower world, in the midst of the children of men, with those who go down to the pit (the grave).

para que ningún árbol vuelva a engreírse por su altura ni levante su copa por encima de la espesura, aun cuando esté bien regado y crezca junto a las aguas, porque todos están destinados a morir e irse a las profundidades de la tierra, como los hijos de los hombres, que descienden a la fosa.»

15 T hus says the Lord God: When goes down to Sheol (the place of the dead), I will cause a mourning; I will cover the deep for it and I will restrain its floods, and the many waters will be stayed; and I will cause Lebanon to be in black gloom and to mourn for it, and all the trees of the field, dismayed, will faint because of it.

Así ha dicho Dios el Señor: «El día que ese cedro descendió al sepulcro, le ordené al abismo guardar luto por él; detuve sus ríos, y las muchas aguas dejaron de correr. Por él cubrí de tinieblas al Líbano, y todos los árboles del bosque se secaron.

16 I will make the nations quake at the sound of its fall when I cast it down to Sheol with those who descend into the pit, and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, will be comforted in the netherworld.

Cuando lo hice descender al sepulcro, junto con todos los que bajan al sepulcro, con el estruendo de su caída hice temblar a las naciones. En las profundidades de la tierra, todos los mejores árboles del Edén y del Líbano, todos los que beben aguas, fueron consolados.

17 T hey also shall go down into Sheol with it to those who were slain by the sword—yes, those who were its arm, who dwelt under its shadow in the midst of the nations.

Ellos también descendieron al sepulcro con él y con los que murieron a filo de espada, con los que fueron su punto de apoyo, con los que estuvieron a su sombra en medio de las naciones.

18 T o whom among the trees of Eden are you thus like in glory and in greatness? Yet you shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the netherworld. You shall lie among the uncircumcised heathen with those who are slain by the sword. This is how it shall be with Pharaoh and all the multitude of his strength, his tumult, and his store, says the Lord God.

¿Qué árbol, entre los árboles del Edén, puede compararse contigo en gloria y en grandeza? Sin embargo, caerás a lo más profundo de la tierra, junto con los árboles de Edén, y yacerás entre los incircuncisos, junto con los que murieron a filo de espada. »Esto es el faraón y toda su grandeza.» Palabra de Dios el Señor.
