1 H ear this, all you peoples; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,

«Al maestro del coro. Salmo dei figli di Kore.» Ascoltate, popoli tutti, porgete orecchio, abitanti del mondo,

2 B oth low and high, rich and poor together:

sí plebei e nobili, ricchi e poveri assieme.

3 M y mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

La mia bocca proferirà parole di sapienza, e la meditazione del mio cuore porterá intendimento.

4 I will submit and consent to a parable or proverb; to the music of a lyre I will unfold my riddle (my problem).

porgerò l'orecchio a un proverbio, esporrò il mio enigma con l'arpa.

5 W hy should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of those who would supplant me surrounds me on every side,

Perché dovrei temere nei giorni dell'avversità, quando mi circonda la malvagità dei miei avversari,

6 E ven of those who trust in and lean on their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

quelli che confidano nei loro beni e si gloriano nell'abbondanza della loro ricchezza?

7 N one of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—

Nessuno può in alcun modo riscattare il proprio fratello, né dare a DIO il prezzo del suo riscattó,

8 F or the ransom of a life is too costly, and can never suffice—

perché il riscatto della sua anima è troppo caro, e il suo costo non basterebbe mai,

9 S o that he should live on forever and never see the pit (the grave) and corruption.

per far sí che egli viva per sempre e non veda la fossa.

10 F or he sees that even wise men die; the fool and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

Infatti tutti vedono che i savi muoiono e che nello stesso modo periscono gli stolti e gli insensati, e lasciano ad altri i loro beni.

11 T heir inward thought is that their houses will continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands their own and after their own names.

Internamente essi pensano che le loro case dureranno per sempre, le loro abitazioni siano eterne, e cosí danno i loro nomi alle terre.

12 B ut man, with all his honor and pomp, does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.

Eppure anche l'uomo che vive nelle ricchezze non dura; egli è simile alle bestie che periscono.

13 T his is the fate of those who are foolishly confident, yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah!

Questo è il comportamento degli stolti e di quelli che li seguono e approvano i loro discorsi. (Sela)

14 L ike sheep they are appointed for Sheol (the place of the dead); death shall be their shepherd. And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form and beauty shall be consumed, for Sheol shall be their dwelling.

Sono sospinti come pecore verso lo Sceol, la morte li ingoierà, e al mattino gli uomini retti regneranno su di loro. Il loro sfarzo svanirà nello Sceol lontano dalla loro dimora.

15 B ut God will redeem me from the power of Sheol (the place of the dead); for He will receive me. Selah!

Ma DIO riscatterà la mia anima dal potere dello Sceol, perché egli mi accoglierà. (Sela)

16 B e not afraid when one is made rich, when the wealth and glory of his house are increased;

Non temere quando uno si arricchisce, quando la gloria della sua casa aumenta,

17 F or when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not descend after him.

perché quando morrà non porterà nulla con sé; la sua gloria non scenderà dietro di lui.

18 T hough while he lives he counts himself happy and prosperous, and though a man gets praise when he does well,

Anche se in vita egli si riteneva felice (la gente infatti ti loda quanto tu prosperi)

19 H e will go to the generation of his fathers, who will nevermore see the light.

egli raggiungerà la generazione dei suoi padri, che non vedranno mai piú la luce.

20 A man who is held in honor and understands not is like the beasts that perish.

L'uomo che vive nelle ricchezze senza avere intendimento è simile alle bestie che periscono.
