1 F or behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread and the whole stay of water,

Ecco, il Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti, sta per togliere a Gerusalemme, e a Giuda ogni sostegno e appoggio, ogni sostegno di pane e ogni sostegno di acqua,

2 T he mighty man and the man of war, the judge and the prophet, the one who foretells by divination and the old man,

3 T he captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the expert craftsman and the skillful enchanter.

il capo di una cinquantina e il notabile, il consigliere, l'esperto in arti magiche e l'abile incantatore.

4 A nd I will make boys their princes, and with childishness shall they rule over them.

Darò loro dei ragazzi come principi, e dei bambini li domineranno.

5 A nd the people shall be oppressed, each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; the child shall behave himself proudly and with insolence against the old man, and the lowborn against the honorable.

Il popolo sarà oppresso, l'uno dall'altro, e ognuno dal suo prossimo; il fanciullo sarà insolente verso il vecchio, lo spregevole verso l'uomo onorato.

6 W hen a man shall take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying, You have a robe, you shall be our judge and ruler, and this heap of ruins shall be under your control—

Uno afferrerà il proprio fratello nella casa di suo padre e dirà: «Tu hai un mantello, sii nostro capo e prenditi cura di questa rovina».

7 I n that day he will answer, saying, I will not be a healer and one who binds up; I am not a physician. For in my house is neither bread nor clothing; you shall not make me judge and ruler of the people.

Ma in quel giorno egli dichiarerà solennemente, dicendo: «Io non fascerò le vostre ferite, perché in casa mia non c'è né pane né mantello; non fatemi capo del popolo».

8 F or Jerusalem is ruined and Judah is fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory and defy His glorious presence.

Gerusalemme infatti barcolla e Giuda cade, perché la loro lingua e le loro opere sono contro l'Eterno, per provocare ad ira lo sguardo della sua maestà.

9 T heir respecting of persons and showing of partiality witnesses against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil.

La loro parzialità con le persone testimonia contro di essi; mettono in mostra il loro peccato come Sodoma e non lo nascondono. Guai a loro, perché fanno del male a se stessi.

10 S ay to the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

Dite al giusto che avrà bene, perché mangerà il frutto delle sue opere.

11 W oe to the wicked! It shall be ill with them, for what their hands have done shall be done to them.

Guai all'empio! Gli verrà addosso la sventura, perché gli sarà reso quel che le sue mani hanno fatto.

12 A s for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people, your leaders cause you to err, and they confuse (destroy and swallow up) the course of your paths.

Gli oppressori del mio popolo sono fanciulli, e donne dominano su di lui. O mio popolo, quelli che ti guidano ti conducono fuori strada e distruggono il sentiero che tu percorri.

13 T he Lord stands up to contend, and stands to judge the peoples and His people.

L'Eterno si presenta per accusare e prende posto per giudicare i popoli.

14 T he Lord enters into judgment with the elders of His people and their princes: For you have devoured the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

L'Eterno entra in giudizio con gli anziani, del suo popolo e con i suoi principi: «Siete voi che avete divorato la vigna; le spoglie del povero si trovano nelle vostre case.

15 W hat do you mean by crushing My people and grinding the faces of the poor? says the Lord God of hosts.

Quale diritto avete di calpestare il mio popolo e di pestare la faccia dei poveri?», dice il Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti.

16 M oreover, the Lord said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks and with undisciplined (flirtatious and alluring) eyes, tripping along with mincing and affected gait, and making a tinkling noise with their feet,

L'Eterno dice ancora: «Poiché le figlie di Sion sono altezzose e procedono con il collo teso e con sguardi provocanti, camminando a piccoli passi e facendo tintinnare gli anelli ai loro piedi,

17 T herefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will cause them to be stripped naked.

il Signore colpirà con la scabbia la sommità del capo delle figlie di Sion, e l'Eterno metterà a nudo le loro vergogne».

18 I n that day the Lord will take away the finery of their tinkling anklets, the caps of network, the crescent head ornaments,

In quel giorno il Signore toglierà l'ornamento degli anelli alle caviglie, i cappellini e le lunette,

19 T he pendants, the bracelets or chains, and the spangled face veils and scarfs,

gli orecchini, i braccialetti e i veli,

20 T he headbands, the short ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume boxes, the amulets or charms,

i turbanti, le catenine ai piedi, le cinture, i vasetti di profumo e gli amuleti,

21 T he signet rings and nose rings,

gli anelli, i gioielli al naso,

22 T he festal robes, the cloaks, the stoles and shawls, and the handbags,

gli abiti da festa, le mantelline, gli scialli e le borsette,

23 T he hand mirrors, the fine linen, the turbans, and the veils.

gli specchi, le camicette, i cappucci e le vestaglie.

24 A nd it shall come to pass that instead of the sweet odor of spices there shall be the stench of rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; and searing instead of beauty.

E avverrà che invece di profumo vi sarà marciume, invece della cintura una corda, invece di riccioli calvizie, invece di una veste costosa un sacco stretto, un marchio di fuoco invece di bellezza.

25 Y our men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty men in battle.

I tuoi uomini cadranno di spada, e i tuoi prodi in battaglia.

26 A nd gates shall lament and mourn; and she, being ruined and desolate, shall sit upon the ground.

Le sue porte gemeranno e saranno in lutto; tutta desolata siederà per terra.
