1 W hen Jesus had finished His charge to His twelve disciples, He left there to teach and to preach in their cities.

E dopo che Gesú ebbe finito di dare disposizioni ai suoi dodici discepoli, se ne andò di là, per insegnare e predicare nelle loro città.

2 N ow when John in prison heard about the activities of Christ, he sent a message by his disciples

Or Giovanni, avendo in prigione sentito parlare delle opere del Cristo, mandò due dei suoi discepoli a dirgli:

3 A nd asked Him, Are You the One Who was to come, or should we keep on expecting a different one?

«Sei tu colui che deve venire, oppure dobbiamo aspettarne un altro?»

4 A nd Jesus replied to them, Go and report to John what you hear and see:

E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Andate e riferite a Giovanni le cose che udite e vedete:

5 T he blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed (by healing) and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up and the poor have good news (the Gospel) preached to them.

I ciechi riacquistano la vista e gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono mondati e i sordi odono; i morti risuscitano e l'evangelo è annunziato ai poveri.

6 A nd blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) is he who takes no offense at Me and finds no cause for stumbling in or through Me and is not hindered from seeing the Truth.

Beato è colui che non si sarà scandalizzato di me!».

7 T hen as these men went their way, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: What did you go out in the wilderness (desert) to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

Ora, come essi se ne andavano, Gesú prese a dire alle folle intorno a Giovanni: «Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto? Una canna sbattuta dal vento?

8 W hat did you go out to see then? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings.

Ma che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un uomo avvolto in morbide vesti? Ecco, coloro che portano vesti morbide abitano nei palazzi dei re.

9 B ut what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one '> out of the common, more eminent, more remarkable, and] superior to a prophet.

Insomma, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un profeta? Sí, vi dico, egli è piú che un profeta,

10 T his is the one of whom it is written, Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, who shall make ready Your way before You.

Perché questi è colui del quale è scritto: "Ecco, io mando il mio messaggero davanti alla tua faccia, egli preparerà la tua strada davanti a te".

11 T ruly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

In verità vi dico: tra i nati di donna non è sorto mai nessuno piú grande di Giovanni Battista; ma il minimo nel regno dei cieli è piú grande di lui.

12 A nd from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force '> share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion].

E dai giorni di Giovanni Battista fino ad ora, il regno dei cieli subisce violenza e i violenti lo rapiscono.

13 F or all the Prophets and the Law prophesied up until John.

Poiché tutti i profeti e la legge hanno profetizzato fino a Giovanni.

14 A nd if you are willing to receive and accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.

E se lo volete accettare, egli è Elia che doveva venire.

15 H e who has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him consider and perceive and comprehend by hearing.

Chi ha orecchi da udire, oda!

16 B ut to what shall I liken this generation? It is like little children sitting in the marketplaces who call to their playmates,

Ma a chi paragonerò questa generazione? Essa è simile a fanciulli seduti nelle piazze, che si rivolgono ai loro compagni

17 W e piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed dirges, and you did not mourn and beat your breasts and weep aloud.

e dicono: "Noi vi abbiamo sonato il flauto e voi non avete ballato, abbiamo intonato lamenti e voi non avete fatto cordoglio".

18 F or John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon!

Difatti è venuto Giovanni, che non mangia né beve, ed essi dicono egli ha un demone

19 T he Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and '> especially wicked] sinners! Yet wisdom is justified and vindicated by what she does (her deeds) and by her children.

venuto il Figlio dell'uomo che mangia e beve, ed essi dicono: "Ecco un mangione e un beone, amico dei pubblicani, e dei peccatori" Ma alla sapienza è stata resa giustizia dai suoi figli».

20 T hen He began to censure and reproach the cities in which most of His mighty works had been performed, because they did not repent.

Allora egli cominciò a rimproverare quelle città, in cui la maggior parte delle sue opere potenti erano state fatte, perché esse non si erano ravvedute, dicendo:

21 W oe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.

«Guai a te, Corazin! Guai a te, Betsaida! Perché se in Tiro e Sidone fossero state fatte le opere potenti che sono state compiute tra di voi, già da tempo si sarebbero pentite con sacco e cenere.

22 I tell you, it shall be more endurable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

Perciò io vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio, Tiro e Sidone saranno trattate con piú tolleranza di voi.

23 A nd you, Capernaum, are you to be lifted up to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued until today.

E tu, o Capernaum, che sei stata innalzata fino al cielo, sarai abbassata fino all'inferno, perché se in Sodoma fossero state fatte le opere potenti compiute in te, essa esisterebbe ancora oggi.

24 B ut I tell you, it shall be more endurable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.

Pertanto io vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio la sorte del paese di Sodoma sarà piú tollerabile della tua».

25 A t that time Jesus began to say, I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth '> I acknowledge openly and joyfully to Your honor], that You have hidden these things from the wise and clever and learned, and revealed them to babies '> childish, untaught, and unskilled].

In quel tempo Gesú prese a dire: «Io ti rendo lode, o Padre, Signore del cielo e della terra, perché hai nascosto queste cose ai savi e agli intelligenti, e le hai rivelate ai piccoli fanciulli.

26 Y es, Father, such was Your gracious will and good pleasure.

Sí, o Padre, perché cosí ti è piaciuto.

27 A ll things have been entrusted and delivered to Me by My Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Son except the Father, and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son deliberately wills to make Him known.

Ogni cosa mi è stata data in mano dal Padre mio, e nessuno conosce il Figlio, se non il Padre; e nessuno conosce il Padre, se non il Figlio e colui al quale il Figlio avrà voluto rivelarlo.

28 C ome to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. '> ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]

Venite a me, voi tutti che siete travagliati e aggravati, ed io vi darò riposo.

29 T ake My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest ( relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls.

Prendete su di voi il mio giogo e imparate da me, perché io sono mansueto ed umile di cuore; e voi troverete riposo per le vostre anime.

30 F or My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.

Perché il mio giogo è dolce e il mio peso è leggero!».
