1 O Lord, remember what has come upon us! Look down and see our reproach (our national disgrace)!

Ricordati, Eterno, di quanto ci è accaduto, guarda e vedi il nostro obbrobrio.

2 O ur inheritance has fallen over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.

La nostra eredità è passata a stranieri, le nostre case a estranei.

3 W e have become orphans and fatherless; our mothers are like widows.

Noi siamo diventati orfani, senza padre, le nostre madri sono come vedove.

4 W e have had to pay money to drink the water that belongs to us; our wood is sold to us.

Dobbiamo pagare per l'acqua che beviamo, la nostra legna l'abbiamo solo a pagamento.

5 O ur pursuers are upon our necks; we are weary and are allowed no rest.

Siamo inseguiti con un giogo sul collo, siamo esausti e non abbiamo alcun riposo.

6 W e have given the hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians to get food to satisfy.

Abbiamo teso la mano all'Egitto e all'Assiria, per saziarci di pane.

7 O ur fathers sinned and are no more, and we have borne their iniquities.

I nostri padri hanno peccato e non sono piú, e noi portiamo la punizione delle loro iniquità.

8 S ervants and slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us out of their hands.

Schiavi dominano su di noi, nessuno può liberarci dalle loro mani.

9 W e get our bread at the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

Ci procuriamo il pane a rischio della nostra vita, davanti alla spada del deserto.

10 O ur skin glows and is parched as from an oven because of the burning heat of famine.

La nostra pelle si è riscaldata come un forno per l'ardore della fame.

11 T hey ravished the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah.

Hanno violentato le donne in Sion, le vergini nelle città di Giuda.

12 T hey hung princes by their hands; the persons of elders were not respected.

I capi sono stati impiccati dalle loro mani, la persona dei vecchi non è stata rispettata.

13 Y oung men carried millstones, and boys fell under wood.

I giovani sono stati messi a macinare, i ragazzi sono caduti sotto il carico delle legna.

14 T he elders have ceased from the city’s gate, the young men from their music.

I vecchi hanno smesso di radunarsi alla porta, i giovani hanno smesso di suonare i loro strumenti.

15 C eased is the joy of our hearts; our dancing has turned into mourning.

La gioia dei nostri cuori è venuta meno, la nostra danza si è mutata in lutto.

16 T he crown has fallen from our head! Woe to us, for we have sinned!

La corona è caduta dal nostro capo; guai a noi, perché abbiamo peccato!

17 B ecause of this our hearts are faint and sick; because of these things our eyes are dim and see darkly.

Per questo si è ammalato il nostro cuore, per queste cose si sono oscurati i nostri occhi:

18 A s for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, the jackals prowl over it!

per il monte di Sion che è desolato, e vi scorazzano le volpi.

19 B ut You, O Lord, remain and reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generations.

Ma tu, o Eterno, rimani per sempre, e il tuo trono di generazione in generazione.

20 W hy do You forget us forever? Why do You forsake us so long?

Perché ci dimenticheresti per sempre e ci abbandoneresti per un lungo tempo?

21 T urn us to Yourself, O Lord, and we shall be turned and restored! Renew our days as of old!—

Facci ritornare a te, o Eterno, e noi ritorneremo; ristabilisci i nostri giorni come In passato.

22 O r have You utterly rejected us? Or are You exceedingly angry with us ?

Ci hai forse interamente rigettati o sei tu grandemente adirato contro di noi?
