1 O give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His name, make known His doings among the peoples!

Celebrate l'Eterno, invocate il suo nome; fate conoscere le sue opere fra i popoli,

2 S ing to Him, sing praises to Him; meditate on and talk of all His marvelous deeds and devoutly praise them.

Cantate a lui, cantate lodi a lui, meditate su tutte le sue meraviglie.

3 G lory in His holy name; let the hearts of those rejoice who seek and require the Lord.

Gloriatevi nel suo santo nome, si rallegri il cuore di quanti cercano l'Eterno.

4 S eek, inquire of and for the Lord, and crave Him and His strength (His might and inflexibility to temptation); seek and require His face and His presence evermore.

Cercate l'Eterno e la sua forza; cercate del continuo la sua faccia,

5 r emember the marvelous deeds that He has done, His miracles and wonders, the judgments and sentences which He pronounced.

Ricordate le meraviglie che egli ha fatto, i suoi miracoli e i giudizi della sua bocca,

6 O you offspring of Abraham His servant, you children of Jacob, His chosen ones,

voi, o progenie d'Abrahamo, suo servo, o figli di Giacobbe, suoi eletti.

7 H e is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth.

Egli è l'Eterno, il nostro DIO; i suoi giudizi sono su tutta la terra.

8 H e is mindful of His covenant and forever it is imprinted on His heart, the word which He commanded and established to a thousand generations,

Egli si ricorda in eterno del suo patto e per mille generazioni della parola da lui comandata,

9 T he covenant which He made with Abraham, and His sworn promise to Isaac,

del patto che fece con Abrahamo e del suo giuramento che fece a Isacco,

10 W hich He confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

che confermò a Giacobbe come suo statuto e a Israele come un patto eterno,

11 S aying, Unto you will I give the land of Canaan as your measured portion, possession, and inheritance.

dicendo: «ti darò il paese di Canaan come porzione della vostra eredità»,

12 W hen they were but a few men in number, in fact, very few, and were temporary residents and strangers in it,

quando non erano che un piccolo numero, pochissimi e stranieri nel paese,

13 W hen they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people,

e andavano da una nazione all'altra, da un regno a un altro popolo.

14 H e allowed no man to do them wrong; in fact, He reproved kings for their sakes,

Egli non permise che alcuno li opprimesse; anzi puní dei re per amor loro,

15 S aying, Touch not My anointed, and do My prophets no harm.

e disse: «Non toccate i miei unti e non fate alcun male ai miei profeti».

16 M oreover, He called for a famine upon the land; He cut off every source of bread.

Poi fece venir la carestia nel paese e distrusse ogni fonte di cibo.

17 H e sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold as a servant.

Egli mandò davanti a loro un uomo, Giuseppe, che fu venduto come schiavo.

18 H is feet they hurt with fetters; he was laid in chains of iron and his soul entered into the iron,

Gli serrarono i piedi in ceppi e fu oppresso con catene di ferro.

19 U ntil his word came true, until the word of the Lord tried and tested him.

La parola dell'Eterno lo mise alla prova, finché si adempí ciò che egli aveva detto.

20 T he king sent and loosed him, even the ruler of the peoples, and let him go free.

Allora il re mandò a farlo sciogliere, il dominatore di popoli mandò a liberarlo,

21 H e made Joseph lord of his house and ruler of all his substance,

e lo fece signore della sua casa e governatore sopra tutti i suoi beni,

22 T o bind his princes at his pleasure and teach his elders wisdom.

per legare i suoi principi a suo giudizio e insegnare ai suoi anziani, la sapienza.

23 I srael also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

Anche Israele venne in Egitto, e Giacobbe soggiornò nel paese di Cam.

24 T here greatly increased His people and made them stronger than their oppressors.

E DIO moltiplicò grandemente il suo popolo e lo rese piú potente dei suoi nemici.

25 H e turned the hearts to hate His people, to deal craftily with His servants.

Poi mutò il loro cuore, perché odiassero il suo popolo e tramassero inganni contro i suoi servi.

26 H e sent Moses His servant, and Aaron, whom He had chosen.

Allora egli mandò Mosé, suo servo, e Aaronne che aveva eletto.

27 T hey showed His signs among them, wonders and miracles in the land of Ham (Egypt).

Essi operarono fra loro i portenti da lui ordinati e fecero prodigi nella terra di Cam.

28 H e sent darkness and made the land dark, and they rebelled not against His word.

Mandò le tenebre e fece cadere il paese nell'oscurità, ed essi non si ribellarono alla sua parola.

29 H e turned waters into blood and caused their fish to die.

Cambiò le acque loro in sangue e fece morire i loro pesci.

30 T heir land brought forth frogs in abundance, even in the chambers of their kings.

Il loro paese brulicò di rane, che entrarono perfino nelle camere dei loro re.

31 H e spoke, and there came swarms of beetles and flies and mosquitoes and lice in all their borders.

Alla sua parola venne una moltitudine d'insetti e zanzare in tutto il loro territorio.

32 H e gave them hail for rain, with lightning like flaming fire in their land.

Mandò loro grandine invece di pioggia e fiamme di fuoco nel loro paese;

33 H e smote their vines also and their fig trees and broke the trees of their borders.

colpí anche le loro vigne e i loro fichi e distrusse gli alberi del loro territorio.

34 H e spoke, and the locusts came, and the grasshoppers, and that without number,

Egli parlò, e vennero cavallette e bruchi senza numero,

35 A nd ate up all the vegetation in their land and devoured the fruit of their ground.

che divorarono tutta la vegetazione nel loro paese e mangiarono il frutto della loro terra.

36 H e smote also all the firstborn in their land, the beginning and chief substance of all their strength.

Egli colpí anche tutti i primogeniti nel loro paese, le primizie di tutto il loro vigore;

37 H e brought forth also with silver and gold, and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

e fece uscire il suo popolo con argento e oro, e non vi fu alcuno fra le sue tribú che vacillasse.

38 E gypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen upon the people.

Gli Egiziani si rallegrarono della loro partenza, perché il terrore d'Israele era caduto su di essi.

39 T he Lord spread a cloud for a covering, and a fire to give light in the night.

Egli distese una nuvola per coprirli e accese un fuoco per illuminarli di notte,

40 a sked, and He brought quails and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

Alla loro richiesta egli fece venire le quaglie e li saziò col pane del cielo.

41 H e opened the rock, and water gushed out; it ran in the dry places like a river.

Aperse la roccia e ne scaturirono acque; esse scorrevano nel deserto come un fiume.

42 F or He remembered His holy word and promise to Abraham His servant.

Poiché egli si ricordò della sua santa promessa, fatta ad Abrahamo, suo servo;

43 A nd He brought forth His people with joy, and His chosen ones with gladness and singing,

fece quindi uscire il suo popolo con letizia e i suoi eletti con grida di gioia.

44 A nd gave them the lands of the nations, and they reaped the fruits of those peoples’ labor,

e diede loro i paesi delle nazioni, ed essi ereditarono il frutto della fatica dei popoli,

45 T hat they might observe His statutes and keep His laws. Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)

affinché osservassero i suoi statuti e ubbidissero alle sue leggi. Alleluia.
