1 D eliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men;

«Al maestro del coro. Salmo di Davide.» Liberami, o Eterno dagli uomini malvagi; proteggimi dagli uomini violenti,

2 T hey devise mischiefs in their heart; continually they gather together and stir up wars.

che tramano malvagità nel loro cuore: essi si radunano continuamente per far guerra.

3 T hey sharpen their tongues like a serpent’s; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah!

Aguzzano la loro lingua come il serpente e hanno un veleno di aspide sotto le loro labbra, (Sela)

4 K eep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent men who have purposed to thrust aside my steps.

Preservami, o Eterno, dalle mani dell'empio e proteggimi dall'uomo violento che cospirano per farmi cadere.

5 T he proud have hidden a snare for me; they have spread cords as a net by the wayside, they have set traps for me. Selah!

I superbi hanno nascosto per me un laccio e corde, mi hanno teso una rete ai margini del sentiero, hanno disposto tranelli per me. (Sela)

6 I said to the Lord, You are my God; give ear to the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

Io ho detto all'Eterno: «Tu sei il mio DIO, ascolta o Eterno, il grido delle mie suppliche.

7 O God the Lord, the Strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle.

O Eterno il Signore, tu sei la forza della mia salvezza, tu hai coperto il mio capo nel giorno della battaglia.

8 G rant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; further not their wicked plot and device, lest they exalt themselves. Selah!

O Eterno, non concedere agli empi quel che desiderano, non favorire i loro disegni, perché non si esaltino. (Sela)

9 T hose who are fencing me in raise their heads; may the mischief of their own lips and the very things they desire for me come upon them.

Fa che la testa di quanti mi circondano sia coperta dalla perversità delle loro stesse labbra.

10 L et burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire, into floods of water or deep water pits, from which they shall not rise.

Cadano loro addosso carboni accesi; siano essi gettati nel fuoco, in fosse profonde, da cui non possano piú risorgere.

11 L et not a man of slanderous tongue be established in the earth; let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

L'uomo maldicente non sia reso stabile sulla terra; la sventura perseguiti l'uomo violento fino alla rovina».

12 I know and rest in confidence upon it that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will secure justice for the poor and needy.

Io so che l'Eterno difenderà la causa dell'afflitto e farà giustizia al povero.

13 S urely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence (before Your very face).

Certo i giusti celebreranno il tuo nome, e gli uomini retti abiteranno alla tua presenza.
