1 A nd immediately when it was morning, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole council, held a consultation; and when they had bound Jesus, they took Him away '> violently] and handed Him over to Pilate.

E al mattino presto, i capi dei sacerdoti con gli anziani, gli scribi e tutto il sinedrio, tenuto consiglio, legarono Gesú, lo portarono via e lo consegnarono a Pilato.

2 A nd Pilate inquired of Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He replied, It is as you say.

E Pilato gli domandò: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». Ed egli, rispondendo, gli disse: «Tu lo dici».

3 A nd the chief priests kept accusing Him of many things.

E i capi dei sacerdoti lo accusavano di molte cose; ma egli non rispondeva nulla.

4 A nd Pilate again asked Him, Have You no answer to make? See how many charges they are bringing against You!

Pilato lo interrogò di nuovo, dicendo: «Non rispondi nulla? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano?».

5 B ut Jesus made no further answer at all, so that Pilate wondered and marveled.

Ma Gesú non rispose piú nulla, tanto che Pilato ne rimase meravigliato.

6 N ow at the Feast he set free for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

Or ad ogni festa era solito rilasciare loro un prigioniero, chiunque essi chiedessero.

7 A nd among the rioters in the prison who had committed murder in the insurrection there was a man named Barabbas.

Vi era allora in prigione un tale chiamato Barabba, insieme ad altri compagni ribelli, i quali avevano commesso un omicidio durante una sommossa.

8 A nd the throng came up and began asking Pilate to do as he usually did for them.

E la folla, gridando, cominciò a domandare che facesse come aveva sempre fatto per loro.

9 A nd he replied to them, Do you wish me to set free for you the King of the Jews?

Allora Pilato rispose loro, dicendo: «Volete che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?».

10 F or he was aware that it was '> because they were prompted] by envy that the chief priests had delivered Him up.

Perché sapeva che i capi dei sacerdoti glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.

11 B ut the chief priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release for them Barabbas instead.

Ma i capi dei sacerdoti incitarono la folla a chiedere piuttosto che liberasse loro Barabba.

12 A nd again Pilate said to them, Then what shall I do with the Man Whom you call the King of the Jews?

E Pilato, prendendo di nuovo la parola, disse loro: «Che volete dunque che faccia di colui che voi chiamate il re dei Giudei?».

13 A nd they shouted back again, Crucify Him!

Ed essi gridarono di nuovo: «Crocifiggilo!».

14 B ut Pilate said to them, Why? What has He done that is evil? But they shouted with all their might all the more, Crucify Him '> at once]!

E Pilato disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto?». Essi allora gridarono ancora piú forte: «Crocifiggilo!».

15 S o Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, set Barabbas free for them; and after having Jesus whipped, he handed over to be crucified.

Perciò Pilato, volendo soddisfare la folla, liberò loro Barabba. E, dopo aver flagellato Gesú, lo consegnò loro perché fosse crocifisso.

16 T hen the soldiers led Him away to the courtyard inside the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and they called the entire detachment of soldiers together.

Allora i soldati lo condussero nel cortile interno, cioè nel pretorio, e convocarono l'intera coorte.

17 A nd they dressed Him in purple, and, weaving together a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him.

Lo vestirono di porpora e, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela misero sul capo.

18 A nd they began to salute Him, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), King of the Jews!

Cominciarono poi a salutarlo dicendo: «Salve, re dei Giudei!».

19 A nd they struck His head with a staff made of a reed and spat on Him and kept bowing their knees in homage to Him.

E gli percuotevano il capo con una canna, gli sputavano addosso e, piegando le ginocchia, lo adoravano.

20 A nd when they had making sport of Him, they took the purple off of Him and put His own clothes on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

Dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora e lo rivestirono delle sue vesti, poi lo portarono fuori per crocifiggerlo.

21 A nd they forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the field (country), to carry His cross.

E costrinsero un passante, un certo Simone di Cirene che tornava dalla campagna, padre di Alessandro e di Rufo, perché portasse la sua croce.

22 A nd they led Him to Golgotha, meaning The Place of a Skull.

Poi condussero Gesú al luogo detto Golgota che significa: Luogo del teschio.

23 A nd they give Him wine mingled with myrrh, but He would not take it.

Gli diedero da bere del vino mescolato con mirra, ma egli non lo prese.

24 A nd they crucified Him; and they divided His garments and distributed them among themselves, throwing lots for them to decide who should take what.

E, dopo averlo crocifisso, spartirono le sue vesti, tirandole a sorte, per sapere che cosa toccasse a ciascuno.

25 A nd it was the third hour (about nine o’clock in the morning) when they crucified Him.

Era l'ora terza quando lo crocifissero.

26 A nd the inscription of the accusation against Him was written above, The King of the Jews.

E l'iscrizione che indicava il motivo della condanna, posta sopra lui, diceva: "il re dei Giudei"

27 A nd with Him they crucified two robbers, one on right hand and one on His left.

Crocifissero pure con lui due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e l'altro alla sua sinistra.

28 A nd the Scripture was fulfilled which says, He was counted among the transgressors.

Cosí si adempí la Scrittura che dice: «Egli è stato annoverato fra i malfattori».

29 A nd those who passed by kept reviling Him and reproaching Him abusively in harsh and insolent language, wagging their heads and saying, Aha! You Who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,

E coloro che passavano lí vicino lo ingiuriavano, scuotendo il capo e dicendo: «Eh, tu che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo riedifichi

30 N ow rescue Yourself '> from death], coming down from the cross!

salva te stesso e scendi giú dalla croce!».

31 S o also the chief priests, with the scribes, made sport of Him to one another, saying, He rescued others '> from death]; Himself He is unable to rescue.

Similmente anche i capi dei sacerdoti con gli scribi, beffandosi, dicevano tra di loro: «Egli ha salvato gli altri, e non può salvare se stesso.

32 L et the Christ (the Messiah), the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and trust in and rely on Him and adhere to Him! Those who were crucified with Him also reviled and reproached Him.

Il Cristo, il re d'Israele, scenda ora dalla croce, affinché lo vediamo e crediamo». Anche quelli che erano stati crocifissi con lui, lo ingiuriavano.

33 A nd when the sixth hour (about midday) had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (about three o’clock).

Poi, venuta l'ora sesta, si fece buio su tutto il paese fino all'ora nona.

34 A nd at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?—which means, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me '> deserting Me and leaving Me helpless and abandoned]?

E all'ora nona, Gesú gridò a gran voce: «Eloì, Eloì, lammà sabactanì?». Che, tradotto vuol dire: «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?.».

35 A nd some of those standing by, hearing it, said, See! He is calling Elijah!

E alcuni degli astanti, udito ciò, dicevano: «Ecco, egli chiama Elia!».

36 A nd one man ran, and, filling a sponge with vinegar (a mixture of sour wine and water), put it on a staff made of a reed and gave it to Him to drink, saying, Hold off! Let us see whether Elijah come to take Him down.

Allora uno di loro accorse, inzuppò una spugna nell'aceto e, postala su una canna, gli diede da bere, dicendo: «Lasciate, vediamo se viene Elia a tirarlo giú».

37 A nd Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed out His life.

Ma Gesú, emesso un forte grido, rese lo spirito.

38 A nd the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

Allora il velo del tempio, si squarciò in due, dall'alto in basso.

39 A nd when the centurion who stood facing Him saw Him expire this way, he said, Really, this Man was God’s Son!

E il centurione che stava di fronte a Gesú, visto che dopo aver gridato cosí aveva reso lo spirito, disse: «Veramente quest'uomo era Figlio di Dio».

40 N ow some women were there also, looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,

Vi erano pure delle donne che guardavano da lontano, fra di esse vi erano Maria Maddalena e Maria madre di Giacomo il minore e di Iose e Salome

41 W ho, when was in Galilee, were in the habit of accompanying and ministering to Him; and also many other who had come up with Him to Jerusalem.

che lo seguivano e lo servivano quando era in Galilea; e ce n'erano molte altre che erano salite con lui a Gerusalemme.

42 A s evening had already come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, before the Sabbath,

Poi, avvicinandosi ormai la sera, poiché era la Preparazione, cioè la vigilia del sabato,

43 J oseph, he of Arimathea, noble and honorable in rank and a respected member of the council (Sanhedrin), who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, daring the consequences, took courage and ventured to go to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

Giuseppe d'Arimatea, un rispettabile membro del consiglio, che aspettava anch'egli il regno di Dio, andò coraggiosamente da Pilato e domandò il corpo di Gesú.

44 B ut Pilate wondered whether He was dead so soon, and, having called the centurion, he asked him whether was already dead.

E Pilato si meravigliò che fosse già morto. E, chiamato il centurione, gli domandò se fosse morto da molto tempo.

45 A nd when he learned from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

E, rassicurato dal centurione, concesse il corpo a Giuseppe.

46 A nd Joseph bought a linen cloth '> for swathing dead bodies], and, taking Him down from the cross, he rolled Him up in the linen cloth and placed Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of a rock. Then he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

E questi, comperato un lenzuolo e deposto Gesú dalla croce, lo avvolse nel lenzuolo e lo mise in un sepolcro che era stato scavato nella roccia; poi rotolò una pietra davanti all'entrata del sepolcro.

47 A nd Mary Magdalene and Mary of Joses were '> attentively] observing where He was laid.

E Maria Maddalena e Maria, madre di Iose, osservavano dove egli veniva deposto.
