1 L isten in silence before Me, O islands and regions bordering on the sea! And let the people gather and renew their strength! Let them come near, then let them speak; let us come near together for judgment.

Isole, state in silenzio! Riprendano nuove forze i popoli, si avvicinino e poi parlino. Raduniamoci insieme a giudizio!

2 W ho has roused up one from the east, whom He calls in righteousness to His service and whom victory meets at every step? He subdues nations before him and makes him ruler over kings. He turns them to dust with the sword, and to driven straw and chaff with his bow.

«Chi ha suscitato uno dall'est, chiamandolo ai suoi piedi nella giustizia? Chi gli ha consegnato le nazioni e sottomesso i re? Egli li dà come polvere alla sua spada e come stoppia dispersa al suo arco.

3 H e pursues them and passes safely and unhindered, even by a way his feet had not trod and so swiftly that his feet do not touch the ground.

Egli insegue e procede sicuro per una strada sulla quale i suoi piedi non sono mai passati.

4 W ho has prepared and done this, calling forth and guiding the destinies of the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord—the first and with the last —I am He.

Chi ha operato e compiuto questo, chiamando le generazioni fin dal principio? Io, l'Eterno, sono il primo e con gli ultimi sarò sempre lo stesso».

5 T he islands and coastlands have seen and fear; the ends of the earth tremble. They draw near and come;

Le isole lo vedono e sono prese da paura, le estremità della terra tremano; si avvicinano, arrivano.

6 T hey help every one his neighbor and say to his brother, Be of good courage!

Ognuno aiuta il suo compagno e dice al proprio fratello: «Coraggio!».

7 S o the carpenter encourages the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who smites the anvil, saying of the soldering, That is good! And he fastens it with nails so that it cannot be moved.

Il fabbro incoraggia l'orafo e chi rifinisce col martello incoraggia chi batte l'incudine e dice della saldatura: «Va bene» e la rinforza con chiodi, perché non si smuova.

8 B ut you, Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham My friend,

9 Y ou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth and have called from the corners of it, and said to you, You are My servant—I have chosen you and not cast you off.

10 F ear not, for I am with you; do not look around you in terror and be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties, yes, I will help you; yes, I will hold you up and retain you with My right hand of rightness and justice.

Non temere, perché io sono con te non smarrirti, perché io sono il tuo DIO. Io ti fortifico e anche ti aiuto e ti sostengo con la destra della mia giustizia.

11 B ehold, all they who are enraged and inflamed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; they who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish.

Ecco, tutti quelli che si sono infuriati contro di te saranno svergognati e confusi; quelli che combattono contro di te saranno ridotti a nulla e periranno.

12 Y ou shall seek those who contend with you but shall not find them; they who war against you shall be as nothing, as nothing at all.

Tu li cercherai ma non troverai piú quelli che contendevano con te; quelli che ti facevano guerra saranno come nulla, come cosa che non esiste piú.

13 F or I the Lord your God hold your right hand; I am the Lord, Who says to you, Fear not; I will help you!

Poiché io, l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti prendo per la mano destra e ti dico: "Non temere, io ti aiuto"

14 F ear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel! I will help you, says the Lord; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

Non temere, o verme di Giacobbe, o uomini d'Israele! Io ti aiuto dice l'Eterno; Il tuo Redentore è il Santo d'Israele.

15 B ehold, I will make you to be a new, sharp, threshing instrument which has teeth; you shall thresh the mountains and beat them small, and shall make the hills like chaff.

Ecco, io ti faccio una trebbia nuova con denti acuminati; tu trebbierai i monti e li ridurrai in polvere, e renderai le colline come la pula.

16 Y ou shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the tempest or whirlwind shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the Lord, you shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.

Tu li ventilerai, il vento li porterà via e il turbine li disperderà; ma tu giubilerai nell'Eterno e ti glorierai nel Santo d'Israele.

17 T he poor and needy are seeking water when there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

I miseri e poveri cercano acqua, ma non ce n'è; la loro lingua è riarsa per la sete; io, l'Eterno, li esaudirò; io, il DIO d'Israele, non li abbandonerò.

18 I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.

Farò scaturire fiumi sulle colline brulle, e fonti in mezzo alle valli; farò del deserto un lago d'acqua e della terra arida sorgenti d'acqua.

19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the wild olive; I will set the cypress in the desert, the plane and the pine together,

Pianterò nel deserto il cedro, l'acacia, il mirto e l'ulivo; metterò nell'Arabah, il cipresso, l'olmo e l'abete,

20 T hat men may see and know and consider and understand together that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

affinché vedano, sappiano, considerino e comprendano tutti assieme che la mano dell'Eterno ha operato questo e il Santo d'Israele l'ha creato.

21 P roduce your cause, says the Lord. Bring forth your strong proofs, says the King of Jacob.

Presentate la vostra causa, dice l'Eterno, esponete le vostre ragioni, dice il Re di Giacobbe.

22 L et them bring them forth and tell us what is to happen. Let them tell us the former things, what they are, that we may consider them and know the outcome of them; or declare to us the things to come.

Le espongano e ci annuncino ciò che accadrà. Dichiarino quali erano le cose passate, perché le possiamo considerare e conoscerne il compimento; oppure annunciateci ciò che avverrà.

23 T ell us the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods; yes, do good or do evil, that we may stare in astonishment and be dismayed as we behold together!

Annunciate ciò che avverrà nel futuro, e cosí sapremo che siete dèi; sí, fate del bene o del male affinché rimaniamo sbigottiti nel vederlo insieme.

24 B ehold, you are nothing, and your work is nothing! The worshiper who chooses you is an abomination.

Ecco, voi siete un nulla e la vostra opera è niente; chi vi sceglie è un abominio.

25 I have raised up and impelled to action one from the north, and he comes; from the rising of the sun he calls upon My name. And he shall tread upon rulers and deputies as upon mortar and as the potter treads clay.

Io ho suscitato uno dal nord, ed egli verrà, dall'est egli invocherà il mio nome; calpesterà i principi come creta, come il vasaio calca l'argilla.

26 h as declared this from the beginning, that we could know? And beforetime, that we could say that he is right? Yes, there is none who declares it, yes, there is none who proclaims it; yes, there is none who hears you speak!

27 I first gave to Zion the announcement, Behold, behold them! And to Jerusalem I gave a herald bringing the good news.

Per primo io l'ho annunciato a Sion: Guardate, eccoli! e a Gerusalemme ho inviato un messaggero di buone novelle.

28 F or I look and there is no man among them, and among these there is no counselor who, when I ask of him, can answer a word.

Guardai, ma non c'era nessuno, proprio nessuno tra loro che sapesse dare un consiglio, o che, interrogato, potesse darmi una risposta.

29 B ehold, these are all emptiness (falseness and futility)! Their works are worthless; their molten images are empty wind (confusion and waste).

Ecco, tutti costoro sono vanità; le loro opere sono un nulla e le loro statue sono vento e cose di nessun valore».
