1 W hen it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people held a consultation against Jesus to put Him to death;

Venuto il mattino, tutti i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo, tennero consiglio contro Gesú, per farlo morire.

2 A nd they bound Him and led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.

E, legatolo, lo condussero via e lo consegnarono nelle mani del governatore Ponzio Pilato.

3 W hen Judas, His betrayer, saw that was condemned, '> afflicted in mind and troubled for his former folly; and] with remorse he brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,

Allora Giuda, che lo aveva tradito, vedendo che Gesú era stato condannato si pentí e riportò i trenta sicli d'argento ai capi dei sacerdoti e agli anziani,

4 S aying, I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. They replied, What is that to us? See to that yourself.

dicendo: «Ho peccato, tradendo il sangue innocente». Ma essi dissero: «Che c'importa? Pensaci tu!».

5 A nd casting the pieces of silver into the '> sanctuary of the] temple, he departed; and he went off and hanged himself.

Ed egli, gettati i sicli d'argento nel tempio, si allontanò e andò a impiccarsi.

6 B ut the chief priests, picking up the pieces of silver, said, It is not legal to put these in the treasury, for it is the price of blood.

Ma i capi dei sacerdoti presero quei denari e dissero: «Non è lecito metterli nel tesoro del tempio, perché è prezzo di sangue».

7 S o after consultation they bought with them the potter’s field in which to bury strangers.

E tenuto consiglio, comprarono con quel denaro il campo del vasaio, come luogo di sepoltura per i forestieri.

8 T herefore that piece of ground has been called the Field of Blood to the present day.

Perciò quel campo è stato chiamato sino ad oggi: "Campo di sangue"

9 T hen were fulfilled the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet when he said, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him on Whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,

Allora si adempí quanto era stato detto dal profeta Geremia che disse: «E presero i trenta pezzi d'argento, il prezzo di colui che fu valutato, come è stato valutato dai figli d'Israele;

10 A nd they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.

e li versarono per il campo del vasaio, come mi ordinò il Signore».

11 N ow Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus said to him, You have stated.

Ora Gesú comparve davanti al governatore; e il governatore lo interrogò dicendo: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». E Gesú gli disse: «Tu lo dici!».

12 B ut when the charges were made against Him by the chief priests and elders, He made no answer.

Accusato poi dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani, non rispose nulla.

13 T hen Pilate said to Him, Do You not hear how many and how serious are the things they are testifying against You?

Allora Pilato gli disse: «Non odi quante cose testimoniano contro di te?».

14 B ut He made no reply to him, not even to a single accusation, so that the governor marveled greatly.

Ma egli non gli rispose neppure una parola, tanto che il governatore ne fu grandemente meravigliato.

15 N ow at the Feast the governor was in the habit of setting free for the people any one prisoner whom they chose.

Ora il governatore, in occasione di ogni festività, aveva l'usanza di rilasciare alla folla un prigioniero, come essi volevano.

16 A nd at that time they had a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas.

Avevano in quel tempo un ben noto prigioniero, di nome Barabba.

17 S o when they had assembled for this purpose, Pilate said to them, Whom do you want me to set free for you, Barabbas, or Jesus Who is called Christ?

Quando si furono radunati, Pilato chiese loro: «Chi volete che vi liberi, Barabba o Gesú, detto Cristo?».

18 F or he knew that it was because of envy that they had handed Him over to him.

Perché egli sapeva bene che glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.

19 A lso, while he was seated on the judgment bench, his wife sent him a message, saying, Have nothing to do with that just and upright Man, for I have had a painful experience today in a dream because of Him.

Ora, mentre egli sedeva in tribunale, sua moglie gli mandò a dire: «Non avere nulla a che fare con quel giusto, perché oggi ho molto sofferto in sogno, per causa sua».

20 B ut the chief priests and the elders prevailed on the people to ask for Barabbas, and put Jesus to death.

Ma i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani persuasero le folle a chiedere Barabba, e a far morire Gesú.

21 A gain the governor said to them, Which of the two do you wish me to release for you? And they said, Barabbas!

E il governatore, replicando, disse loro: «Quale dei due volete che vi liberi?». Essi dissero: «Barabba!».

22 P ilate said to them, Then what shall I do with Jesus Who is called Christ?

Pilato disse loro: «Che farò dunque di Gesú, detto Cristo?». Tutti gli dissero: «Sia crocifisso!».

23 T hey all replied, Let Him be crucified! And he said, Why? What has He done that is evil? But they shouted all the louder, Let Him be crucified!

Ma il governatore disse: «Eppure, che male ha fatto?». Ma essi gridavano ancora piú forte: «Sia crocifisso!».

24 S o when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather that a riot was about to break out, he took water and washed his hands in the presence of the crowd, saying, I am not guilty of nor responsible for this righteous Man’s blood; see to it yourselves.

Allora Pilato, vedendo che non otteneva nulla, ma che anzi il tumulto cresceva sempre piú, prese dell'acqua e si lavò le mani davanti alla folla, dicendo: «Io sono innocente del sangue di questo giusto; pensateci voi».

25 A nd all the people answered, Let His blood be on us and on our children!

E tutto il popolo rispondendo disse: «Sia il suo sangue sopra di noi e sopra i nostri figli!».

26 S o he set free for them Barabbas; and he Jesus whipped, and delivered Him up to be crucified.

Allora egli liberò loro Barabba; e dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesú, lo diede loro, perché fosse crocifisso.

27 T hen the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the palace, and they gathered the whole battalion about Him.

Allora i soldati del governatore, avendo condotto Gesú nel pretorio, radunarono attorno a lui tutta la coorte.

28 A nd they stripped off His clothes and put a scarlet robe ( garment of dignity and office worn by Roman officers of rank) upon Him,

E, spogliatolo, gli misero addosso un manto scarlatto.

29 A nd, weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed (staff) in His right hand. And kneeling before Him, they made sport of Him, saying, Hail (greetings, good health to You, long life to You), King of the Jews!

E, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero una canna nella mano destra; e, inginocchiandosi davanti a lui, lo schernivano dicendo: «Salve, o re dei Giudei!».

30 A nd they spat on Him, and took the reed (staff) and struck Him on the head.

Poi, sputandogli a addosso, presero la canna e con quella lo percotevano sul capo.

31 A nd when they finished making sport of Him, they stripped Him of the robe and put His own garments on Him and led Him away to be crucified.

E dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono di quel manto e lo rivestirono delle sue vesti; poi lo condussero via per crocifiggerlo.

32 A s they were marching forth, they came upon a man of Cyrene named Simon; this man they forced to carry the cross of Jesus.

Ora, uscendo, incontrarono un uomo di Cirene, di nome Simone, che costrinsero a portare la croce di Gesú.

33 A nd when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of a Skull,

E, giunti sul luogo detto Golgota, che vuol dire: il luogo del teschio

34 T hey offered Him wine mingled with gall to drink; but when He tasted it, He refused to drink it.

gli diedero da bere dell'aceto mescolato con fiele; ma egli, avendolo assaggiato non volle berne.

35 A nd when they had crucified Him, they divided and distributed His garments by casting lots so that the prophet’s saying was fulfilled, They parted My garments among them and over My apparel they cast lots.

Dopo averlo crocifisso, si spartirono le sue vesti tirando a sorte, affinché si adempisse ciò che fu detto dal profeta: «Hanno diviso tra loro le mie vesti e sulla mia tunica hanno tirato a sorte».

36 T hen they sat down there and kept watch over Him.

Postisi quindi a sedere, gli facevano la guardia.

37 A nd over His head they put the accusation against Him ( the cause of His death), which read, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.

Al di sopra del suo capo, posero anche la motivazione scritta della sua condanna: «COSTUI E' GESU

38 A t the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right hand and one on the left.

Allora furono crocifissi con lui due ladroni: uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.

39 A nd those who passed by spoke reproachfully and abusively and jeered at Him, wagging their heads,

E coloro che passavano di là lo ingiuriavano scuotendo il capo,

40 A nd they said, You Who would tear down the sanctuary of the temple and rebuild it in three days, rescue Yourself from death. If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

e dicendo: «Tu che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo ricostruisci, salva te stesso, se sei il Figlio di Dio, scendi giú dalla croce!».

41 I n the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, made sport of Him, saying,

Similmente, anche i capi dei sacerdoti, con gli scribi e gli anziani facendosi beffe, dicevano:

42 H e rescued others from death; Himself He cannot rescue from death. He is the King of Israel? Let Him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in and acknowledge and cleave to Him.

«Egli ha salvato gli altri e non può salvare se stesso, se è il re d'Israele, scenda ora giú dalla croce e noi crederemo in lui;

43 H e trusts in God; let God deliver Him now if He cares for Him and will have Him, for He said, I am the Son of God.

egli si è confidato in Dio; lo liberi ora, se veramente lo gradisce, poiché ha detto: io sono il Figlio di Dio.

44 A nd the robbers who were crucified with Him also abused and reproached and made sport of Him in the same way.

Anche i ladroni crocifissi con lui lo ingiuriavano allo stesso modo.

45 N ow from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour (three o’clock).

Dall'ora sesta fino all'ora nona si fecero tenebre su tutto il paese.

46 A nd about the ninth hour (three o’clock) Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?—that is, My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me '> helpless, forsaking and failing Me in My need]?

Verso l'ora nona, Gesú gridò con gran voce dicendo: «Elì, Elì, lammà sabactanì?». Cioè: «Dio mio, Dio mio perché mi hai abbandonato?».

47 A nd some of the bystanders, when they heard it, said, This Man is calling for Elijah!

E alcuni fra i presenti, udito questo, dicevano: «Costui chiama Elia».

48 A nd one of them immediately ran and took a sponge, soaked it with vinegar (a sour wine), and put it on a reed (staff), and was about to give it to Him to drink.

E in quell'istante uno di loro corse, prese una spugna, l'inzuppò d'aceto e, infilatala in cima ad una canna, gli diede da bere.

49 B ut the others said, Wait! Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him from death.

Ma gli altri dicevano: «Lascia, vediamo se viene Elia a salvarlo».

50 A nd Jesus cried again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.

E Gesú, avendo di nuovo gridato con gran voce, rese lo spirito.

51 A nd at once the curtain of the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth shook and the rocks were split.

Ed ecco, il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo; la terra tremò e le rocce si spaccarono;

52 T he tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep in death were raised;

i sepolcri si aprirono e molti corpi dei santi, che dormivano, risuscitarono;

53 A nd coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

e, usciti dai sepolcri dopo la risurrezione di Gesú, entrarono nella santa città e apparvero a molti.

54 W hen the centurion and those who were with him keeping watch over Jesus observed the earthquake and all that was happening, they were terribly frightened and filled with awe, and said, Truly this was God’s Son!

Ora il centurione e quelli che con lui facevano la guardia a Gesú, veduto il terremoto e le cose accadute, temettero grandemente e dissero: «Veramente costui era il Figlio di Dio!».

55 T here were also numerous women there, looking on from a distance, who were of those who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him.

Erano là presenti anche molte donne che osservavano da lontano, esse avevano seguito Gesú dalla Galilea per servirlo;

56 A mong them were Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

fra di loro c'era Maria Maddalena. Maria madre di Giacomo e di Iose; e la madre dei figli di Zebedeo.

57 W hen it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

Poi verso sera giunse un uomo ricco di Arimatea, di nome Giuseppe, il quale era pure discepolo di Gesú.

58 H e went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

Costui si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesú. Allora Pilato comandò che il corpo gli fosse consegnato.

59 A nd Joseph took the body and rolled it up in a clean linen cloth used for swathing dead bodies

E Giuseppe, preso il corpo, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo pulito;

60 A nd laid it in his own fresh ( undefiled) tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a big boulder over the door of the tomb and went away.

e lo mise nel suo sepolcro nuovo, che egli si era fatto scavare nella roccia; poi, dopo aver rotolato una grande pietra all'ingresso del sepolcro, se ne andò.

61 A nd Mary of Magdala and the other Mary kept sitting there opposite the tomb.

Or Maria Maddalena e l'altra Maria stavano là, sedute di fronte al sepolcro.

62 T he next day, that is, the day after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate

E il giorno seguente, che era quello successivo alla Preparazione, i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei si riunirono presso Pilato,

63 A nd said, Sir, we have just remembered how that vagabond Imposter said while He was still alive, After three days I will rise again.

dicendo: «Signore, ci siamo ricordati che quel seduttore, quando era ancora in vita, disse: "Dopo tre giorni io risusciterò".

64 T herefore give an order to have the tomb made secure and safeguarded until the third day, for fear that His disciples will come and steal Him away and tell the people that He has risen from the dead, and the last deception and fraud will be worse than the first.

Ordina dunque che il sepolcro sia ben custodito fino al terzo giorno, che talora non vengano i suoi discepoli di notte a rubare il corpo e poi dicano al popolo: "egli è risuscitato dai morti" cosí l'ultimo inganno sarebbe peggiore del primo».

65 P ilate said to them, You have a guard go, make it as secure as you can.

Ma Pilato disse loro: «Voi avete un corpo di guardia; andate, e assicurate il sepolcro, come vi sembra meglio».

66 S o they went off and made the tomb secure by sealing the boulder, a guard of soldiers being with them and remaining to watch.

Essi dunque andarono e assicurarono il sepolcro e, oltre a mettere la guardia, sigillarono la pietra.
